If Task Manager’s uptime continues after you shut down and turn your Windows 11 PC back on, Fast Startup may explain it. With Fast Startup enabled, Shut down can save the Windows kernel session to a hibernation file instead of closing it completely. Restart follows a full boot cycle, so uptime resets. The counter alone does not mean the PC stayed fully on while it was shut down.
Why uptime can continue after Shut down
Task Manager reports how long the current Windows kernel session has been active. Fast Startup changes what happens when you choose Shut down: Windows logs off user sessions, then saves the kernel session and device drivers to a hibernation file so the next startup can be faster. Microsoft explains that “During Fast Startup, the kernel session is not closed, but it is hibernated.” Microsoft’s System power states documentation describes this mechanism.
Because the kernel session is restored on the next startup, its uptime can carry over an ordinary shutdown. That does not establish that the computer remained fully powered on during the interval; hybrid shutdown is not the same as leaving Windows running.
First, check whether you used Shut down or Restart
These options do not necessarily produce the same result when Fast Startup is enabled. Microsoft states that “The Fast Startup setting doesn’t apply to Restart.” Restart performs a full boot cycle, which resets the uptime counter. The distinction is described in Microsoft’s Fast Startup troubleshooting article, whose stated platform applicability is Windows 10 and Windows 8.1.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- After Windows starts again, open Task Manager > Performance > CPU.
- Check Up time. If it reset after Restart but carried over after ordinary Shut down, Fast Startup is a plausible explanation. This is a diagnostic inference from the documented behavior, not proof that no other issue is involved.
Choose how you want Windows to shut down
| Option | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | Performs a full boot cycle and resets uptime. | Use it when you want a fresh Windows session without changing Fast Startup. |
| Turn off Fast Startup | Makes ordinary Shut down perform a full shutdown rather than using Fast Startup’s hybrid path. | You give up Fast Startup’s startup-time benefit; the cited sources do not quantify the difference for an individual PC. |
shutdown /s /t 0 |
Runs a full shutdown. Microsoft documents /hybrid as the optional parameter for hybrid shutdown. |
Requires entering a command instead of using the usual Shut down option. |
Disable Fast Startup in Control Panel
The following path is given in a Microsoft Q&A community answer, rather than in a Microsoft Learn procedure:
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- If needed, select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Clear Turn on fast startup, then save the change.
The setting may not be available in every configuration. If you do not see it, use Restart to start a fresh session or use the full-shutdown command instead.

Run a full shutdown from a command
To shut down fully without changing the Fast Startup setting, run shutdown /s /t 0 in Command Prompt or another command interface that accepts Windows shutdown commands. Microsoft documents this command in its Fast Startup troubleshooting guidance.

What the uptime reading does—and does not—tell you
A continuing uptime after Shut down is consistent with Fast Startup, but the counter by itself does not identify the shutdown path or prove a fault. Compare the counter after Restart with its behavior after ordinary Shut down. Microsoft’s current system-power documentation explains the general Fast Startup mechanism; individual Windows 11 configurations may differ.

Fast Startup exists to speed the next startup. Disabling it removes that specific benefit, but the available Microsoft sources do not state how much slower startup will be on a particular PC.
