Windows 11 Search is gaining the ability to carry out actions—not just find apps, files, settings, and information. Microsoft began gradually rolling the feature out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel on October 7, 2026. It is a preview, not a general release, and its first supported language is English.
What Windows Search will be able to do
Microsoft describes the change as moving Search from finding things to doing tasks. In the initial preview, examples include asking Search to turn on Dark mode, Night Light, or Bluetooth; dim the screen or mute audio; minimize all open windows; and arrange windows on screen. The goal is to let users invoke common system and window actions from Search rather than navigate to each control.
Actions involving a phone connected through Phone Link are planned, but Microsoft describes them as coming—not as part of the initial preview. The announcement does not specify which phone actions will be supported or when they will arrive.

The October 7, 2026 announcement says the feature is gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel, initially with English support. Microsoft lists these eligible preview builds:

- Build 28120.3181 in the Experimental (26H1) channel.
Having one of these builds does not necessarily mean the feature flag is already visible: Microsoft says to check for updates and restart before looking for it.
- Upgrade to one of the listed builds in its corresponding Experimental channel.
- Check for Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags.
- Look for the new Search experience feature flag and enable it if it is available.
The rollout is gradual, so the feature may not appear for every eligible Insider immediately. The announcement does not establish a date for general availability.

How it compares with Spotlight on Mac
Apple’s Spotlight guide documents Quick Actions alongside utilities for opening, previewing, and locating results; calculations and unit conversions; word lookups; clipboard history; and Siri requests. Microsoft’s announcement emphasizes natural-language system and window actions in Windows Search, with more actions planned.

Both bring useful actions into a search interface, but the announcements cover different feature sets and do not provide a controlled comparison. It is fair to call Microsoft’s update Spotlight-like; the available information does not establish that Windows has matched or surpassed Spotlight.

How this fits with other Windows Search changes
Microsoft described separate Windows Search improvements in a July 13, 2026 Insider post. Those changes focus on results and controls: reducing clutter, labeling result sources more clearly, removing promotional content from web results, allowing users to control web and Microsoft Store suggestions, prioritizing local matches when more relevant, tolerating app-search typos, improving file search, and improving reliability. They are distinct from the October announcement’s inline actions, and their staged Insider rollout does not mean every Windows 11 user has them.
Windows’ indexing settings are also separate. Microsoft Support says Classic indexes common folders such as Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop by default, while Enhanced indexes all user folders and files and may use more system resources. Microsoft has not stated that either indexing mode is required for the new Search actions.

What is known about the Start menu
During the initial previews, the existing Search experience remains in the Start menu. Microsoft says work is underway to bring the new experience there next year; the October 7, 2026 post does not give a more specific release date.
