Short answer: the right fix depends on what is failing. If the Windows 11 Search panel will not open, closes immediately, or will not accept typing, restart SearchHost.exe and Windows Explorer before rebuilding anything. If Search opens but files are missing, check the search scope, indexing status, Windows Search service, and file-type settings before rebuilding the index. Missing OneDrive, Outlook, work, school, or web results usually require checking Search permissions, connected accounts, network access, or organization policy—not the local index.

Start with the least destructive fix: restart Windows, restart Windows Explorer, end SearchHost.exe, and check the Windows Search service. Rebuild the index only when the Search interface works but local results are incomplete or stale.

Windows 11 uses SearchHost.exe for its Search interface. Microsoft documents restarting that process, rebuilding the index, resetting Windows Search, and repairing the Search package as separate remedies for different failures. See Microsoft’s Windows Search troubleshooting guidance for the official procedures.

Identify which part of Windows Search is broken

Before changing settings, press Win+S and try searching for a built-in item such as Settings, Notepad, or Control Panel. Then open File Explorer with Win+E and try a search there. Note whether the panel opens, accepts text, returns apps and settings, finds files, or shows only web results.

What you see Most likely layer Start here
Clicking Search does nothing Taskbar, Explorer, or Search interface Restart Windows Explorer, then end SearchHost.exe
Search opens and immediately disappears SearchHost.exe or the Windows Search package End SearchHost.exe, install Windows updates, then consider the official Search reset
Search opens but typing does nothing Search interface, input handling, or package data Restart Explorer and SearchHost.exe; if it continues, use the reset and repair paths below
Search accepts text but shows no apps, settings, or files Search interface, service, package, or damaged Windows components Restart the Search process, check WSearch, and repair Windows if other components are also failing
Apps and settings appear, but files do not Index scope, paused indexing, service, or index database Check Searching Windows, indexed locations, and the index status
Only recently added files are missing Indexing is still in progress or the location is excluded Check the folder scope and allow indexing to finish
File names appear, but words inside documents do not File-type indexing configuration Enable Index Properties and File Contents for the relevant extension
Local results work, but web results do not Web-search setting, policy, account, or network Check Search permissions and whether web search is managed
OneDrive, Outlook, or work results are missing Cloud content permissions or account connection Check cloud search and connected Microsoft or work accounts
Only one Windows account is affected Per-user package data, profile permissions, or registry state Test Search in a new account before attempting per-user repair
SearchIndexer.exe uses high CPU, disk, or memory Large index, active maintenance, or an unhealthy database Check item count and indexed folders; reduce scope before disabling Search

This separation matters because rebuilding the index cannot normally repair a panel that crashes before it can display results. Conversely, resetting the Search package is unnecessary when one folder was simply excluded from indexing.

1. Restart Windows and refresh the shell

Restart Windows once before deeper troubleshooting, particularly if Windows recently installed an update. A restart can finish pending updates and clear a temporary shell or Search process failure.

Restart Windows Explorer

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. If Task Manager shows a simplified view, select More details.
  3. On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer.
  4. Right-click it and select Restart.
  5. Test Search with Win+S.

This refreshes the desktop shell, taskbar, and File Explorer integration without deleting personal files or rebuilding the index. It is a useful first step for a nonresponsive taskbar or File Explorer search control, but it is not a complete Windows Search repair. A practical secondary reference is this File Explorer Search troubleshooting guide.

End and restart SearchHost.exe

Use this targeted fix when the Search panel is blank, disappears, remains stuck, or does not respond to keyboard input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select the Details tab. Select More details first if the tab is hidden.
  3. Find SearchHost.exe.
  4. Right-click it and select End task, then confirm.
  5. Press Win+S again.

Ending this process does not permanently disable Search. Windows 11 starts it again the next time Search is used. Windows 10 used the older SearchUI.exe name; do not substitute obsolete Cortana or SearchUI.exe instructions on a current Windows 11 installation.

If SearchHost.exe is missing, immediately crashes, or repeatedly reappears and crashes, stop repeatedly ending the process. Continue with Windows Update, the official Search reset, package repair, or system-file repair.

2. Check Windows Update before advanced repairs

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates and install available updates.
  4. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.

If Search broke after an update, the timing may suggest an update-related regression, but it does not prove that a particular update caused the problem. Check Microsoft’s current Search guidance and any applicable Windows release-health information before removing updates or modifying the registry. If Start, Settings, the taskbar, built-in apps, and Search all began failing together, system-component repair is more appropriate than an index rebuild.

3. Verify the Windows Search service

The Windows Search service, whose service name is WSearch, supports indexing and local search. A privacy utility, antivirus product, or PC “optimizer” may disable it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Search.
  3. Double-click the service.
  4. Check that Service status is Running.
  5. Check that Startup type is Automatic (Delayed Start).
  6. If it is stopped, select Start.
  7. If it is running but appears stuck, select Stop, wait briefly, and select Start.
  8. Select Apply and OK, then test Search.

Microsoft’s current performance guidance identifies Running and Automatic (Delayed Start) as the expected configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows Search performance troubleshooting and its guidance on the Windows Search service.

Do not permanently disable Windows Search just to stop high CPU or disk use. That may reduce indexing activity, but it also removes or degrades fast indexed searching. Reduce the indexed scope and investigate the index size instead.

4. Check whether indexing is paused or incomplete

For missing or outdated local file results, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Check the indexing status and indexed-item count.

Status Meaning and action
Indexing complete The indexer has finished. A missing file is more likely to be outside the search scope, excluded, or affected by file-type settings.
Indexing in progress Results can be incomplete until the current indexing work finishes. Recently created or copied files may not appear immediately.
Indexing is paused to conserve battery power Connect the PC to power and allow indexing to continue.
Indexing is waiting for computer to become idle Leave the computer idle for a while. Heavy activity can delay maintenance.
Indexing is not running Check the Windows Search service in services.msc.
Insufficient disk space Free disk space before rebuilding the index.
Index is performing maintenance Wait for maintenance to complete before taking more invasive action.

Initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours. Microsoft says a full rebuild may require up to 24 hours, depending on the number and type of files, storage speed, power state, and other activity. A rebuild that has not produced complete results after only a few minutes has probably not failed; it may still be working.

For more detail on these modes and status messages, see Microsoft’s guide to Search indexing in Windows.

5. Correct the search scope: Classic or Enhanced

Windows 11’s Searching Windows settings offer two broad indexing modes:

  • Classic indexes common locations such as Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop by default.
  • Enhanced indexes the entire PC, including user folders and other files, but can use more CPU, disk space, and battery.

Do not enable Enhanced mode automatically. It is useful when you genuinely need system-wide file search, but adding one missing folder is usually more efficient.

Include a missing folder

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
  2. Check whether the folder containing the missing file is included.
  3. Select Customize search locations if that control is available.
  4. Alternatively, select Advanced indexing options.
  5. In the Indexing Options window, select Modify.
  6. Tick the required folder and select OK.

After adding a location, give Windows time to index it. A file stored on an excluded external drive, a nonstandard user folder, or a location omitted by Classic mode will not appear merely because the index database was rebuilt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Enable full-text indexing for the right file types

Windows may index a file’s name and properties without indexing the words inside it. That explains why Search can find a document by filename but not by a phrase contained in the document.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
  2. Select Advanced indexing options.
  3. In the Indexing Options window, select Advanced.
  4. Open the File Types tab.
  5. Select the relevant extension.
  6. Choose Index Properties and File Contents when full-text search is required.
  7. Select OK.

Full-text indexing can increase index size and processing time. Enable it for file types you actually search rather than every extension on the computer.

7. Rebuild the Windows Search index

Rebuild the index when the Search panel works but local files are missing, stale, or clearly incomplete after you have checked the scope and service. Rebuilding recreates the search catalog; it does not delete personal files.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
  2. Select Advanced indexing options.
  3. In the Indexing Options window, select Advanced.
  4. On the Index Settings tab, select Rebuild.
  5. Confirm the rebuild.
  6. Leave the PC powered on, preferably idle, while Windows creates the new index.

Results will be incomplete while the rebuild is underway. Microsoft’s guidance allows up to 24 hours for a full rebuild, although smaller indexes often finish sooner. Avoid repeatedly selecting Rebuild; each new rebuild discards the progress of the previous one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebuilding is not a universal Search fix. It is unlikely to repair a Search panel that will not open, will not accept keyboard input, or crashes immediately. Those symptoms point to the Search interface or package layer.

8. Fix missing web, OneDrive, Outlook, or work results

Windows Search combines several result sources. Local apps, settings, and files are different from Microsoft-account content, OneDrive, Outlook, SharePoint, and Bing-powered web results. If local results work, a missing cloud or web category does not automatically indicate a damaged local index.

Check cloud content and accounts

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions.
  2. Review Cloud content search.
  3. Confirm that the correct personal Microsoft account or work/school account is connected.
  4. Open Search and inspect Connected accounts.
  5. For OneDrive or Outlook results, confirm that the relevant account is signed in and that the service itself is available.

Microsoft explains how Windows Search and privacy affect local, cloud, and web results. Account synchronization, network availability, privacy settings, and organization policy can each affect what appears.

Check web-search restrictions

Web results may be disabled by a setting or policy. On a work or school computer, an administrator can apply policies such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not allow web search
  • Don’t search the web or display web results in Search
  • Fully disable Search UI

Microsoft documents these controls in its Start and Search policy settings and its guidance on Windows connections to Microsoft services. If Search behaves differently on a managed device, ask IT whether web search, cloud search, indexing, or Search UI has been restricted. Do not fight a corporate policy with registry edits.

9. Use the Search troubleshooter only if your build still provides it

Older Windows troubleshooting instructions commonly use:

msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic

That command uses Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), which Microsoft is retiring. The legacy Search and Indexing troubleshooter may still work on some older Windows 11 builds, but it is not a reliable current instruction and may be absent on newer releases.

If your installation shows it, the newer location may be:

If that option is not present, you have not necessarily missed a setting. Continue with the service, search scope, index rebuild, Search reset, and system repair steps in this guide. You can also open the Get Help app and search for a Windows Search or indexing diagnostic. See Microsoft’s information about MSDT and troubleshooter deprecation and its current Windows troubleshooter guidance.

10. Run Microsoft’s official Windows Search reset script

Use the official reset after restarting SearchHost.exe, checking WSearch, and rebuilding the index—or sooner if SearchHost repeatedly fails and the basic steps have not helped. Microsoft says the reset does not affect personal files, although search-result relevance can be temporarily affected while Search recovers.

  1. Download ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 from Microsoft’s official Download Center page.
  2. Save the script to a local folder.
  3. Right-click the file and select Run with PowerShell.
  4. Approve the administrator prompt.
  5. Wait for the script to report Done.
  6. Test Search.

Do not download a replacement script or executable from an unofficial site. Use the Microsoft download linked above.

11. Repair the Windows 11 Search package for one affected user

This is an advanced, last-resort procedure. Consider it when SearchHost.exe repeatedly crashes, the official reset script fails, or Search works in a new Windows account but not the original account. It changes per-user package data and the registry, so create a backup first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test whether the problem is profile-specific

  1. Create or sign in to another Windows user account.
  2. Test Search there.
  3. If Search works in the new account, the Windows Search engine and system-wide service are probably functional.
  4. If Search fails for every account, focus on the service, index database, Windows components, policies, or the Windows build instead.

A new-account test is a diagnostic, not necessarily the final solution. A working new account points toward corrupted Search package data, profile permissions, registry state, or other per-user configuration in the original profile.

Per-user package repair

Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 procedure uses another administrator account or Windows Recovery Environment when necessary:

  1. Sign in with another account, or use Windows Recovery Environment if the affected profile cannot be used safely.
  2. Delete the affected user’s Windows 11 Search package data folder:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy
  1. Sign back in to the affected account.
  2. Back up the registry. In Registry Editor, select File > Export and save the backup somewhere accessible.
  3. Open Registry Editor by pressing Win+R, typing regedit, and pressing Enter.
  4. Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearch
  1. Delete the Search key.
  2. Open an elevated PowerShell window.
  3. Re-register the Windows 11 Search package:
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewyAppxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
  1. Restart Windows and test Search.

These names and paths are for the documented Windows 11 Search package. Do not substitute older Windows 10 Cortana or Microsoft.Windows.Search commands. The package folder or manifest may differ on customized, preview, or unusually damaged installations. If the path does not exist, do not download a replacement executable from a third-party website.

Incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems. If you are not comfortable backing up and restoring the registry, stop here and use Microsoft Support or an administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Repair damaged Windows system files

Use DISM and SFC when Search failure is accompanied by broader Windows problems, including Start-menu failures, Settings not opening, taskbar instability, built-in apps crashing, update failures, repeated SearchHost crashes, or corruption reports in Event Viewer. These tools repair Windows components and protected system files; they do not correct an excluded search folder or an ordinary indexing-scope mistake.

If you want an optional software check for broader Windows errors and stability issues before running these repairs, consider Outbyte PC Repair.

Run DISM first, then SFC

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It may take some time and can appear to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test Search.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC may need. Use Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the full procedure.

Understand the results

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not detect protected system-file corruption.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test Search again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the CBS log or proceed to Windows recovery and repair options.
  • DISM fails: Windows Update, a repair source, or an in-place repair may be required.

13. Use a repair reinstall before a clean installation

If Search is still broken after the process restart, service check, scope correction, index rebuild, official reset, package repair, and DISM/SFC, the cause may be broader Windows component damage or a build-specific problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a Windows repair reinstall or in-place repair before wiping the PC. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options distinguish repair and reinstall approaches based on the type and severity of the failure.

Before starting:

  • Back up important documents and verify that the backup can be opened.
  • Use installation media or the supported recovery method for your installed Windows edition and system architecture.
  • Read every installer choice carefully.
  • Do not select an option that removes apps or files unless that is intentional.
  • On a work or school device, ask IT before using installation media or recovery options.

High CPU, disk, or memory usage from Search

Some indexing activity is normal after first setup, adding a large folder, installing software, or rebuilding the catalog. Check Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows for the indexed-item count and status before assuming that Search is damaged.

Microsoft’s performance guidance gives these approximate scale indicators:

  • A typical user has fewer than 30,000 indexed items.
  • A power user may have up to approximately 300,000 items.
  • Performance problems may begin above approximately 400,000 items.
  • The indexer may support up to approximately 1 million items.
  • Outlook mailboxes with more than 6 million items can degrade indexer performance.

These are troubleshooting benchmarks, not universal limits. Hardware, storage speed, file types, Outlook data, and organizational policies all matter.

To reduce resource use:

  1. Check the indexed-item count and current indexing status.
  2. Remove unnecessary folders from the index.
  3. Avoid indexing huge code repositories, temporary folders, caches, duplicate archives, and generated build output unless you need to search them.
  4. Check whether Outlook data contributes a large number of indexed items.
  5. Allow maintenance or a rebuild to finish rather than repeatedly interrupting it.
  6. Free disk space if Windows reports that space is insufficient.

For advanced diagnosis, Microsoft identifies the Windows 11 index database as Windows.db in:

C:ProgramDataMicrosoftSearchDataApplicationsWindows

Check the file’s Size on disk, not only the size shown in the normal Explorer file-size field. Do not start by manually deleting the database. Stop-service and database-deletion procedures are administrator recovery techniques and can create additional problems if files are locked or the wrong folder is removed.

When to stop troubleshooting

Escalate to Microsoft Support, your organization’s IT department, or a qualified technician when:

  • Search fails for every Windows user account.
  • SearchHost.exe repeatedly crashes.
  • The Windows Search service will not start or immediately stops.
  • DISM or SFC cannot repair corruption.
  • Search broke after a specific update and the problem is reproducible.
  • The device is managed by a work or school organization.
  • You are being asked to delete system database files or alter machine-wide registry settings.

On a managed PC, Search UI, web results, cloud content, indexing, and battery behavior may be centrally controlled. A policy that intentionally hides web results or disables Search is not a fault that a local index rebuild can fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will rebuilding the Windows 11 Search index delete my files?

No. Rebuilding recreates the Search catalog and does not delete personal files. Search results may be incomplete while the catalog is rebuilt, and Microsoft says a full rebuild can take up to 24 hours depending on the number and type of files.

Why does Search work in a new Windows account but not my account?

That usually points to per-user Search package data, profile permissions, registry state, or another user-specific setting rather than a system-wide failure. Test the new account first; only then consider the advanced package and registry repair procedure, with a registry backup.

Is SearchHost.exe malware?

SearchHost.exe is a legitimate Windows 11 Search component. Its presence alone is not suspicious. If a process with that name is consuming unusual resources or is located outside the expected Windows system locations, investigate its file path and digital signature rather than downloading a replacement from the internet.

Should I disable Windows Search to stop high CPU usage?

Usually no. Disabling the Windows Search service can reduce indexing activity but also makes local search incomplete or much slower. First reduce indexed folders, exclude temporary or generated files, check the index size, and allow maintenance or rebuilding to finish.

The Bottom Line

Use the symptom to choose the repair: restart Explorer or SearchHost.exe for a broken Search panel; check WSearch when indexing is not running; correct locations and file-type settings for missing local results; rebuild the index for a damaged or stale catalog; check accounts, cloud permissions, and policy for missing web or cloud results; and reserve package repair, DISM/SFC, and a repair reinstall for persistent or system-wide failures.
