If Windows 11 says “Your device ran into a problem and couldn’t be repaired” and shows an SrtTrail.txt path, first retry Startup Repair once from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If that fails, choose a rollback that matches what changed before the problem began. Avoid Reset or reinstall until you have considered your files and, on an encrypted PC, located your BitLocker recovery key.
Identify the screen before choosing a fix
A Startup Repair failure screen often includes a path to SrtTrail.txt. A blue or black screen that says Windows needs to restart and displays a stop code is a different symptom. The wording alone does not identify the cause; startup problems can involve system files, boot configuration, drivers, software, or hardware.

Note the exact message, any stop code or module name, the complete log path, and what happened just before the failure—for example, a Windows update, a new device or driver, or a power interruption. The stop-code screen can vary by Windows 11 version. Microsoft explains its stop-code messages in Troubleshooting Windows unexpected restarts and stop code errors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect access to your files first
- If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, find the recovery key before starting recovery. WinRE may ask for it.
- Back up important files when you can access them. Microsoft recommends backing up before recovery where possible.
- If the files are irreplaceable or you suspect a storage problem, do not begin with Reset or reinstall. The error message itself does not prove a drive has failed; get advice on preserving the data before taking destructive steps.
Try Startup Repair once from WinRE
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a built-in Windows recovery tool that helps fix issues preventing the operating system from starting.” It attempts to address common startup problems, including missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It may not be able to repair every fault.

- From the recovery screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart.
- If prompted, enter the BitLocker recovery key.
- If Windows still will not start, record the message and log path rather than repeating Startup Repair indefinitely.
The diagnostic log is at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. In WinRE, drive letters can differ from those used during normal Windows operation, so do not assume the Windows installation is on C: when following offline troubleshooting steps. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows startup issues troubleshooting for the log location and advanced boot guidance.
If you cannot reach the recovery tools on the PC, Microsoft’s installation-media route is to boot from media for the installed Windows version, choose Repair your computer, then open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
Choose a rollback based on what changed
In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options and select the option that fits the timing of the failure. Restart and check Windows after each action before moving to a more disruptive option.
| Option | When it fits | What happens to data |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall Updates | The problem began after a quality or feature update. | Microsoft says personal files and apps are not affected, though some updates cannot be uninstalled. |
| System Restore | A restore point predates a driver, software, or system change. | Rolls back system files and settings while keeping personal files. Recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings may be affected. |
| Point-in-time restore | Windows 11 version 24H2 or later offers a suitable point. | Can roll back personal files as well as apps and settings. Changes made after the selected point are lost. |
After a Windows update
Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and follow the available prompts. This is the most direct rollback to try when the timing points to an update.
After a driver or software change
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore if a suitable restore point is available. Review the listed affected programs before confirming.

Point-in-time restore on newer Windows 11 versions
Windows 11 version 24H2 or later may show Point-in-time restore in WinRE. It is a broader rollback than System Restore: personal files changed after the chosen snapshot may also be lost. Check that you can accept that impact before proceeding.
Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows describes the available recovery choices and their effects.
Use Reset or reinstall only after weighing the data impact
| Option | When to consider it | Data and setup impact |
|---|---|---|
| Reset this PC | Less disruptive recovery options did not fix the startup problem. | Offers Keep my files or Remove everything. Apps and settings are removed; back up first where possible. |
| Reinstall from installation media | You deliberately choose a reinstall after other options fail or are unsuitable. | Requires another working PC to create bootable media. Microsoft says this method removes everything from the device. |
Before either option, make sure you understand what will be removed and have the BitLocker recovery key if required. If you choose the installation-media route, use a USB flash drive to create Windows installation media on another working PC; the USB drive alone does not repair the computer. Check your PC manufacturer’s recovery guidance if you need device-specific drivers or factory apps.
Know when to stop and get help
- Stop before a reset or reinstall if the storage device is not detected in firmware, device diagnostics report a hardware fault, or important data is not backed up.
- Contact the PC manufacturer or a qualified repair or data-recovery provider if hardware trouble or data preservation is a concern.
- For a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT department if the recovery options do not resolve the startup issue.
Could Quick Machine Recovery help?
On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, Quick Machine Recovery can detect repeated boot failures and attempt a Windows Update fix during a widespread outage, if the feature is enabled. It is enabled by default on Home; Pro and Enterprise may require an IT administrator to enable it. A fix is not guaranteed, and this feature is not a universal solution for an SrtTrail.txt failure.
