To find crash history in Windows 11, open Start, search for reliability history, and select View reliability history. You can also open Run or Command Prompt and enter perfmon /rel. Reliability Monitor shows dated events that can help you connect a problem with a recent change—but a date match is a clue, not proof of the cause.
Open Reliability Monitor in Windows 11
Use either of these direct methods:
- Start search: Open Start, type reliability history, then select View reliability history.
- Run or Command Prompt: Open Run or Command Prompt, enter
perfmon /rel, and press Enter.
A Microsoft Q&A answer also lists Control Panel > Security and Maintenance > Maintenance > View reliability history, and a route through Performance Monitor’s Monitoring Tools. Menu names may vary by Windows 11 version, language, or configuration, so Start search or the command are useful alternatives. Microsoft Q&A
Read the timeline and inspect an event
- Find the relevant date. Review the timeline for the day your app failed, your PC crashed, or an unexpected shutdown occurred.
- Open the event details. Select the day or marked event, then open its details or report when available. Note the event name, affected application or component, date and time, and any problem details shown.
- Compare with recent changes. Check whether the issue began around a Windows update, app installation or removal, or driver or configuration change. Reliability Monitor can chart software installations, uninstalls, Windows updates, and crashes. A Microsoft-hosted troubleshooting answer recommends checking whether failures began after a recent install or uninstall; timing alone does not show that the change caused the problem. - Look for a pattern that matches what you experienced. A repeated event that coincides with an actual crash is more useful to investigate than an isolated entry without an observable effect. A count or label by itself does not establish that every listed item caused harm.
What a critical event does—and does not—tell you
An event label identifies a reported failure or problem; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis. Use the event’s details and the symptoms you observed to decide what to investigate. A recurring entry that matches a real crash is a stronger lead than an isolated report that had no visible effect.
If the event names an application, check that application’s updates and support information. If its timing matches a Windows update, review Windows Update history. If crashes continue, preserve the event details for more targeted diagnosis rather than applying a generic repair based only on the Reliability Monitor label.

Why the chart may be empty or incomplete
A new or quiet Windows installation may not yet show useful history. In a Microsoft Q&A discussion, a user reported seeing a “check back in a few hours” message on a newly installed Windows 11 system. Community responses suggested there might not yet be enough collected data, but did not establish a guaranteed wait time or collection schedule. Microsoft Q&A discussion
Reliability Monitor vs. Device performance & health
Windows Security includes a separate Device performance & health page for a broader check. Microsoft says its report covers storage capacity, battery life on battery-powered devices, apps and software, and the Windows Time service, and provides recommendations when it detects issues. Use the two views for different questions:

| View | What it focuses on | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Reliability Monitor | Dated crash and system-event history, useful for comparing a problem with changes around the same time | Event details |
| Device performance & health | Current checks of storage, battery on battery-powered devices, apps and software, and Windows Time | Recommendations for certain detected issues |
Microsoft’s Device performance & health overview explains the Windows Security report. It is not a substitute for inspecting the dated event behind a specific crash.
