Windows 11 has separate controls for privacy, background activity, storage, visual effects and power use. Review the ten settings below and change only what fits your needs: disabling a permission or background task can also remove useful location features, timely notifications or app functionality. Labels and availability vary by Windows update, app type, hardware and organizational policy.

1. Advertising ID and personalized offers

To review ad-personalization controls, open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Some older Windows 11 versions may show related controls under General privacy settings instead. See Microsoft’s general privacy settings guidance and its page on Recommendations & offers.

The advertising ID lets participating apps and advertising networks associate activity with an identifier for ad personalization. Turning it off does not reduce the number of ads, and it does not disable all Microsoft or third-party advertising. Treat it as a choice about personalization, not an ad blocker.

2. Diagnostic data and personalized experiences

Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Required diagnostic data helps Microsoft maintain Windows updates, security, compatibility, troubleshooting, reliability and performance. It is not a setting users can universally switch off. Optional diagnostic data adds information such as app activity and device health; if minimizing data sharing is a priority, review whether to disable that option. Work or school policy may manage the available choices.

Review personalized or tailored experiences separately. Those features use diagnostic and account or device information to provide tips, ads and recommendations. Microsoft’s diagnostics and feedback guidance explains the distinction between data categories and related controls.

3. App permissions

Open Settings > Privacy & security, then select a capability such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts or Calendar. Review access by app and allow only what the app needs for a feature you use. Windows lists other capabilities there as well; the exact set can vary.

These controls mostly apply to Microsoft Store apps. Desktop apps may not appear in the list and can manage access differently, so check the app’s own settings too. Microsoft’s Windows privacy settings reference describes the distinction.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

4. Location access and its trade-offs

Under Settings > Privacy & security > Location, review device-level location services and app access. Location may be determined using GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cell towers, an IP address or a default location, depending on the device and circumstances. Windows also provides indicators when an app is currently using location or has recently accessed it.

Location can support useful features such as automatic time-zone setting and Find my device. If you turn it off, those features may be affected. Prefer adjusting access for individual apps when that meets your privacy needs; Microsoft’s location service and privacy guidance explains how Windows uses location.

5. Startup apps

If Windows takes a long time to become ready after sign-in, check which apps launch automatically. Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or use Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable apps you do not need running at sign-in; prioritize apps marked as high impact if you are narrowing down what may be contributing to slow startup.

Rank #3

Task Manager’s impact labels are classifications based on startup CPU and disk activity, not predictions of how much faster your PC will boot:

Task Manager label Microsoft’s listed thresholds
Low impact Under 300 milliseconds CPU and under 292 kilobytes disk
Medium impact Above the low thresholds and under one second CPU or under 3 megabytes disk
High impact Over one second CPU or over 3 megabytes disk

Disabling an app at startup can delay its sync, notifications or other expected functions. Microsoft’s startup-app instructions cover the available controls.

6. Background app permissions

For supported apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, choose Advanced options, then find Background app permissions. This setting is not available for every app.

  • Always: The app can continue background activity, which may use more power.

Keep background access for apps whose timely syncing or notifications matter to you. Microsoft’s background apps and privacy guidance provides more detail.

7. Storage Sense and cleanup choices

Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense to review automatic cleanup and its schedule. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to your configuration. It operates on the system drive, usually C:.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the selections before enabling or changing cleanup. With default settings, Storage Sense does not clean Downloads or cloud files unless you opt in. Cleanup recommendations provide a way to inspect suggested temporary files, large or unused files, cloud files and unused apps before deciding what to remove. Low disk space can slow a PC and make Windows updates difficult, so consider cleanup when storage is tight rather than treating it as a universal speed tweak. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions and its guidance on freeing drive space.

8. Visual effects

If the interface feels sluggish, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and open the matching dialog. On its Visual Effects tab, choose Adjust for best performance to reduce visual effects, or select effects individually.

Visual effects use system resources, but reducing them makes Windows look less polished. This is a conditional option for a constrained or sluggish system, not a requirement for every PC. Microsoft’s PC performance guidance describes the setting.

9. Power mode

Open Settings > System > Power & battery and review Power mode, if the option is available. Windows may offer these choices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best power efficiency to prioritize energy savings.
  • Balanced for a balance of power use and performance.
  • Best performance when you want to prioritize performance.

Best performance can draw more power, shorten laptop battery life and make the device warmer. It may suit demanding work or plugged-in use if that trade-off is acceptable. Availability depends on the PC and manufacturer. Microsoft’s power mode instructions explain the setting.

10. Measure changes and keep Windows current

Use Task Manager to look at Processes and Performance for actual resource use, and Startup apps for what runs when you sign in. Change one setting at a time, then use the PC normally and revisit Task Manager. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped or simply removed a feature you rely on.

Check Settings > Windows Update for available updates; Windows updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Avoid treating scripts that indiscriminately remove Windows components, or disabling security and update services, as routine optimization: those steps can affect protection, compatibility and reliability.
