If the Windows 11 Print Spooler will not start, begin with the printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If that does not restore printing, stop the service, clear the queued print files, and start the service again. Then check the driver for your exact printer model. This order starts with Windows’ automated diagnostics before moving to a reset that removes pending jobs.

What the Print Spooler does—and what its failure looks like

The Print Spooler is the Windows service that manages print jobs. It helps send documents through the queue to a printer. When the service stops or will not start, jobs may remain queued and printing can stop. This points first to a Windows service or queue problem, not automatically to a broken printer.

Pay attention to which part of printing is failing. A service that stops or refuses to start is different from a printer that Windows cannot find, a device that appears offline, or a printer that receives a job but does not produce a page. Those symptoms can overlap, but they call for different checks. Start with the steps below when the spooler itself is the problem; switch to connection troubleshooting if the service runs but Windows still cannot communicate with the printer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need to buy a printer, cable, or third-party repair utility just because the service will not start. The first steps use Windows’ own troubleshooting and service controls. Check hardware only if there is a separate reason to suspect a connection or device problem.

Start with the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter

Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance recommends running the automated printer troubleshooter in Get Help first. It runs diagnostics and attempts to fix many printer problems without requiring you to manually remove queued files.

  1. Open the Windows 11 printer troubleshooting page from Microsoft Support and follow its instructions to launch the printer troubleshooter in Get Help.
  2. Allow the diagnostic to complete. Follow any actions it offers rather than closing the app partway through.
  3. Try printing again and note whether the job leaves the queue and reaches the printer.

If printing works afterward, no queue reset is needed. If the spooler still fails or jobs remain stuck, proceed to the controlled reset. The troubleshooter is the lower-disruption first step; the reset is more direct but removes pending jobs.

Reset the spooler and clear stuck print jobs

Microsoft’s published reset procedure is to stop Print Spooler, delete the files inside the spool queue folder, then start the service and set its startup type to Automatic. The order matters: stop the service before removing files, and delete the files inside the folder—not the printers folder itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Services. Select the taskbar search box, type Services, and open the Services app.
  2. Stop Print Spooler. Find Print Spooler in the service list and open its properties. Select Stop. Leave the properties window available so you can return to it.
  3. Open the queue folder. In File Explorer’s address bar, or in the taskbar search box, enter %WINDIR%system32spoolprinters and open that location.
  4. Delete the files inside the folder. Select and delete the queued spool files in that location. Do not delete the printers folder itself. Removing these files clears pending print jobs, so documents waiting in the queue will not print afterward; users will need to send any still-needed documents again.
  5. Start the service and set its startup type. Return to the Print Spooler properties in Services. Select Start, set Startup type to Automatic, and apply the change.
  6. Retry one print job. Send a small or otherwise convenient document and check whether it leaves the queue and prints.

If the service starts and the new job prints, the reset has addressed the immediate blockage. If it stops again, or the same issue returns, the queue may not be the only issue; review the printer driver and then consider the service-level checks below.

Clearing the queue is not the same as removing the printer or uninstalling its driver. It removes pending spool files. That is why it is worth letting Get Help try first and why you should be prepared to resend any documents that still need to be printed. If you are unsure which files are in the queue folder, confirm the location in the address bar before deleting anything.

Check the driver for the exact printer model

A driver problem can interfere with printing or contribute to spooler trouble. Microsoft Support advises reviewing old, unnecessary, or duplicate printer drivers and obtaining the current driver for the exact printer model from its manufacturer. Do not assume that a driver is the cause merely because the spooler stopped: treat this as the next check if the problem persists or returns.

  1. Open Device Manager from Windows search.
  2. Review the entries under Print queues or Printers. Look for entries that are clearly old, unnecessary, or duplicates of devices you no longer use.
  3. If you need a driver, identify the printer’s exact model and get the current driver from the printer manufacturer’s website. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  4. After reviewing or updating the driver, retry printing and observe whether Print Spooler stays running.

A model-specific driver matters because a generic download may not match the device or its Windows support. If the PC is managed by an organization, check with its administrator before removing printer entries or changing drivers; centrally managed devices may depend on approved packages or settings.

Driver review is more specific than a general service reset: it focuses on the software associated with the printer you actually use. Do not download an arbitrary driver or remove entries simply because they are unfamiliar. If you cannot tell whether an entry is old or required, ask the manufacturer or your organization’s administrator before changing it.

If Print Spooler still will not stay running

For a typical Windows 11 user, retrying the service through Services and running the Get Help printer troubleshooter are the simplest next steps. If the problem continues, avoid broad system changes based on a guess. Microsoft Learn’s deeper Print Spooler troubleshooting guidance discusses possible investigation areas such as system instability or insufficient resources, Group Policy, drivers, and antivirus interference. However, that article applies to supported Windows Server versions. These are possible lines of investigation, not confirmed causes for every Windows 11 failure.

On a work-managed or school-managed PC

Ask the administrator whether service settings, drivers, or policy are controlled centrally. A policy-managed service may be reset or configured again by management. An administrator can also determine whether a security product or a broader system issue warrants investigation. Do not disable antivirus protection or change service permissions as a general experiment; the cited troubleshooting guidance does not establish those changes as a Windows 11 fix.

When an administrator uses a command line

For its Windows Server troubleshooting scenario, Microsoft Learn documents these commands in an elevated shell:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
net stop spooler
net start spooler

It also documents this PowerShell command:

Restart-Service -Name spooler

These are administrator-oriented references from a Windows Server article, not a separate Windows 11 diagnosis. They control the same service, but do not clear queued files or identify why a service is failing. If a command reports access denied, confirm that the shell is elevated or ask an administrator to handle it. Do not respond by making broad permission changes without a specific diagnosis.

For most readers, the Services app remains the straightforward route: it makes the stop and start actions visible and lets you set Startup type to Automatic as part of the documented reset. The command-line examples are not a shortcut around the queue-cleanup steps, and they do not replace checking whether the issue returns after the service is restarted.

Tell a spooler failure apart from a connection problem

If Print Spooler is running but Windows cannot find or communicate with the printer, move to connection and printer-recognition checks rather than repeatedly clearing the queue. Microsoft’s separate guidance covers printer recognition and connection issues.

What you observe Where to investigate next
Print Spooler will not start, or stops while jobs remain queued Run the Windows 11 Get Help printer troubleshooter; if needed, follow the stop-clear-start reset and then review the model-specific driver.
The service runs, but Windows cannot find or reach the printer Check whether the relevant USB, wireless, or Bluetooth connection is available, then follow printer recognition troubleshooting.
The printer is marked offline Treat this as a connection or device-status branch. An offline indication alone does not show that the spooler failed to start.

For a USB printer, check that the cable is connected at the printer and computer. For a wireless or Bluetooth printer, check the applicable connection. These checks make sense when there is a separate sign of a communication problem; they are not substitutes for the service reset when Print Spooler itself will not run.

If the service is running and the printer is still offline or missing, repeating the stop-clear-start sequence may not address the problem. Follow the connection path that matches how the printer is attached, then use the printer-recognition guidance. A service failure and a connection failure can both prevent a document from printing, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Choose the next step by disruption and access

Each step answers a different question, so avoid repeating the most disruptive action without new evidence.

  • Get Help: the least disruptive opening check; it runs diagnostics and attempts repairs.
  • Queue reset: directly clears pending spool files, but discards jobs waiting to print. It requires stopping and restarting the service through Services.
  • Driver review: a more specific follow-up when the issue persists or returns. It requires identifying the exact printer model and may require administrator involvement on managed PCs.
  • Service-level investigation: appropriate when the service still will not stay running after ordinary troubleshooting. Some deeper causes listed in Microsoft’s guidance are for Windows Server, so Windows 11 users should not treat them as established diagnoses.

A hardware replacement is not indicated solely by a spooler service failure. Consider the printer, cable, or network only when there are separate signs of device or connection failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I run Get Help before clearing the print queue?

Yes. Microsoft recommends the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter in Get Help as the first step. It runs diagnostics and attempts repairs without requiring you to remove pending spool files. If it does not resolve the problem, use the controlled reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing the spool folder delete my documents?

The reset deletes queued spool files inside %WINDIR%system32spoolprinters, not the printers folder itself. It clears pending print jobs, so jobs waiting there will not print afterward; resend any documents you still need printed.

Should I delete the printers folder itself?

No. Stop Print Spooler first, then delete the files inside the queue folder. Keep the folder in place. Return to Services afterward, start the service, and set Startup type to Automatic.

What if Print Spooler starts but the printer is still offline?

That points to a different troubleshooting branch. Check the applicable USB, wireless, or Bluetooth connection and follow printer-recognition guidance. An offline status by itself does not establish that the spooler failed to start.

Do I need to install a new driver or buy a repair tool?

Only consider a driver review if the problem persists or returns. Check Device Manager for clearly old, unnecessary, or duplicate entries, and obtain the current driver for the exact printer model from its manufacturer. The documented first steps use Windows’ built-in tools; there is no current reader-facing basis here to recommend buying a repair utility or replacement printer for a spooler failure alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the command-line restart commands on Windows 11?

The cited Microsoft Learn commands are documented for a Windows Server troubleshooting scenario and require an elevated shell there. They can serve as administrator-oriented service-control references, but they do not clear queued files or identify the cause. For ordinary Windows 11 troubleshooting, use Get Help and Services, or ask an administrator if the PC is managed.

The Bottom Line

Run the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter in Get Help first. If the spooler still fails, stop the service before deleting files inside %WINDIR%system32spoolprinters, then start it and set Startup type to Automatic. Review the exact printer model’s driver if the issue persists, and investigate connections only when the service runs but the printer remains unreachable.
