For many Windows 11 users, Microsoft Edge’s built-in password manager is the simplest place to start: it saves and fills passwords, and Microsoft recommends it for most threat models. A third-party manager may suit you better if you need its particular cross-device, sharing, or passkey features. The right choice depends on the devices and sign-in flows you use, how you want credentials protected, and what you are willing to manage.

A password manager stores and fills passwords. A passkey is a different kind of credential; it can be stored in a password manager, on a Windows device, on a phone or tablet, or on a physical security key. Those options are not interchangeable, and the one offered can depend on the sign-in flow and account.

What changed in Edge password protection?

Microsoft retired Edge’s Custom Primary Password for opted-in users on June 4, 2026. Microsoft says Edge now uses device-based authentication—such as Windows Hello, the device password, or operating-system authentication—to protect saved passwords. This describes Edge’s current behavior; it does not establish that Edge is the best choice for every person or organization. Microsoft Support: Edge password protection change

Microsoft’s Edge security documentation recommends Edge’s password manager for most threat models, while also advising organizations to assess their own risk profile. The documentation discusses trade-offs involving sync, trust in an outside vendor, supply-chain security, and risk from a compromised client. A manager’s architecture alone cannot guarantee safety if an attacker controls the user’s active operating-system session. Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How to choose a Windows 11 password manager

Start with the workflows you need, rather than a universal ranking. A manager is useful only if it works where you sign in and you can reliably unlock and recover it.

  • Windows fit: Check for a Windows app, a browser extension for your browser, and support for the Windows or app sign-in flows you actually use.
  • Sync and storage: Find out whether credentials sync between your devices and what account recovery entails. Sync can make passwords available where needed, but also means you are relying on the service’s account and storage model.
  • Security and threat model: Consider the risks of a compromised device or user session, the provider’s security and supply chain, and whether you prefer device-based authentication or an additional vault secret. No option eliminates every risk.
  • Passkeys: Confirm that the manager supports passkeys in your browser, apps, and Windows sign-in flow. Support can vary by feature, version, account, or organization policy.
  • Cost and sharing: Check the current free-tier limits, family or team sharing, and which features require payment directly with the provider. Plan terms can change.
  • Everyday usability: Consider autofill, importing existing passwords, unlocking, and recovery. If the workflow is cumbersome, you may be less likely to use a different strong password for every site.

Edge or a third-party manager?

Edge has the convenience of being built into the browser and uses Windows or other device-based authentication to protect saved passwords. Microsoft notes that this convenience can make it easier to use a different long password on each site. It also warns that an attacker operating in your operating-system session may be able to retrieve saved passwords. Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

A third-party manager adds another provider and account to trust. Depending on the service, it may offer a Windows app, browser extensions, cross-device sync, sharing, or passkey support that better fits your needs. Those differences should be checked feature by feature; the available evidence does not establish one provider as universally safest or best.

How do I sign in using a passkey?

When a site or app offers passkey sign-in, follow its prompt and select the credential store available for that account and device. Microsoft lists a password manager, a phone or tablet, a physical security key, and the local Windows device using Windows Hello as possible places to save a passkey. The choices shown depend on the sign-in flow and account; in work or school settings, organizational support and policy also matter. Microsoft Support: passkey sign-in and storage options

What should you do before moving passwords?

  1. List your devices and browsers. Identify where you need password autofill and passkey sign-in, including any work or school accounts.
  2. Check current support. Review the provider’s Windows app and extension availability, passkey compatibility for your specific sign-in flow, sync options, and current plan terms.
  3. Try the recovery and unlock workflow. Understand what happens if you lose access to a device or account before making a manager your only route to important credentials.
  4. Move deliberately. If importing passwords, use the manager’s documented process, then confirm important logins work and remove exported files or other temporary copies securely.
