“Plugged in, not charging” does not automatically mean your laptop battery has failed. Windows or your laptop maker may be intentionally limiting the charge, or the adapter, cable, port, or battery may have a problem. Start with the checks below; BIOS menus and diagnostics differ by model, so use your manufacturer’s instructions for those steps.
1. Check whether charging is intentionally paused
Some Windows devices use Smart charging to limit how full the battery gets and reduce battery wear. Select or hover over the battery icon. If Windows says “Fully Smart charged” and shows a heart indicator, the pause may be intentional rather than a fault. Microsoft explains the status in its Smart charging guidance.
Open Settings > System > Power & battery to review Windows power information. Manufacturers can implement charge limits differently, and some offer a separate setting in their own software or firmware. If you need a full charge before traveling, consult the instructions for your exact laptop model rather than assuming one Windows setting controls every limit.
Dell charge limits
Depending on the model, Dell BIOS battery-charge options may include Adaptive, Standard, ExpressCharge, Primarily AC Use, or custom thresholds. A configured threshold can explain why the battery stops below 100%. Dell describes these options and adapter checks in its battery and charging guidance; available labels vary. If you temporarily choose a mode that allows a full charge to test the issue, restore your preferred battery-health setting afterward.

2. Check the outlet, adapter, cable, and charging port
- Try a working wall outlet.
- Reseat the adapter connection at both the outlet and laptop, and make sure you are using the laptop’s designated charging port.
- Inspect the adapter, cable, plug, and laptop port for visible damage or debris. Stop using damaged charging equipment.
- If available, test with a known-good adapter that meets the exact laptop’s requirements.
An adapter may power a laptop without supplying enough power to charge its battery. Microsoft lists an incompatible or underpowered charger, the wrong port, and a cable that does not meet the computer’s requirements as possible causes of slow charging or discharging while plugged in. Check your laptop’s official support page or manual for the required adapter type and wattage. Microsoft’s advice is to use the charger and cable designed for your device.
Why a USB-C connector may not be enough
The connector’s shape alone does not establish that a charger and cable can deliver enough power. Microsoft gives standard USB-C as an example of up to 5 V at 3 A (15 W), while USB Power Delivery can support higher power. These are standard capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular laptop, port, charger, or cable supports a specific wattage. All parts must meet the laptop’s requirements.

3. Restart Windows and review battery information
After checking the physical connections, restart the laptop once and see whether charging resumes. To review battery usage and capacity information, open Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /batteryreport
Windows creates an HTML report and the command output tells you where it saved the file. The report can help you inspect battery history and capacity, but it is informational—not a definitive test that proves a battery is defective. Microsoft explains the report and battery care in its Windows battery guidance.

4. Use diagnostics for your exact laptop model
Dell
Dell’s guidance recommends checking whether the adapter is recognized in BIOS, reviewing battery-charge configuration, and running Dell battery diagnostics. An adapter below the system’s minimum wattage can power the computer without charging its battery. BIOS options and support steps differ by model, so follow the instructions for your specific Dell laptop.
HP, Lenovo, and ASUS
For HP, Lenovo, or ASUS laptops, find the exact model number and use that manufacturer’s official support page for adapter specifications, charge-limit settings, BIOS instructions, and diagnostics. Do not rely on Dell’s menus or key presses as a universal procedure; the available instructions and utilities are model-specific.

5. Know when to arrange service
If the laptop still will not charge after you have checked for a charge limit and tested a compatible, known-good adapter, a failed adapter, damaged port, or battery fault may need professional diagnosis. Contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Software troubleshooting cannot repair a physically failed component.

If the battery is visibly swollen, stop using the laptop. Handle it carefully and do not press, puncture, or try to remove the battery unless the manufacturer’s instructions say it is user-removable and you can do so safely.

Before replacing a charger or battery
- Confirm the exact laptop model and compatible connector.
- Verify the required adapter wattage and charging protocol in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Check that the cable supports the required power level and standard.
- Choose a manufacturer-approved or otherwise explicitly compatible charger.
A generic USB-C charger is not a complete compatibility specification, and there is no single wattage that applies to every laptop in this group. Consider a replacement battery only if model-specific diagnostics or a qualified evaluation supports that decision.
