Windows 11 is testing a Battery Status widget that shows battery levels for the PC and its connected peripheral devices in one place. Microsoft announced it in the release notes for Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340.9616, dated October 7, 2026. It is a preview feature rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders, not a confirmed part of the general Windows 11 release, and Microsoft has not said which peripherals it supports.
The headline calls it a widget people will find useful. Whether it becomes useful depends on which devices it can read, and that is the detail Microsoft has not yet published.
What the widget is meant to do
Microsoft describes it this way: “This widget provides a unified view of battery levels for your PC and peripheral devices, helping you quickly assess power status without hunting through multiple UI locations.” The goal is consolidation. Instead of checking a laptop, a wireless mouse, a keyboard and a headset separately, you look at one panel on the Widgets board.
How to add it
Microsoft’s documented path is:
- Open the Widgets board. Select the Widgets button on the taskbar, or press Windows key + W.
- Select Add widgets.
- Select Battery Status.
If Battery Status does not appear in the Add widgets list, your device is most likely not in the rollout yet. The next section explains why.

Who can see it right now
Microsoft lists Battery Status among the changes and improvements being gradually rolled out in build 26340.9616. Experimental builds are based on Windows 11, version 26H2, and are delivered through an enablement package. Microsoft says controlled rollouts begin with a subset of Insiders and expand from there.
A WindowsForum report dated October 7, 2026 describes access as limited to the Experimental channel and says eligible users may not see the widget immediately. That is secondary reporting. The official release notes are the reference for rollout wording.
If you do not see the widget
- Confirm that your PC is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program and set to the Experimental channel. Widgets from this build will not appear on a PC that is on a standard release channel.
- Check Windows Update for pending Insider updates, install them, and restart.
- Wait. Gradual rollout means some eligible devices receive a feature days or weeks after others.

Microsoft also warns that preview features can change, be removed, or be replaced. Its exact wording is: “Features and experiences included in these builds might never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback.” Any interface you see in a preview build may differ from the final version.

Windows Central reported on September 7, 2026, about a month before Microsoft’s announcement, that preview-build strings and assets appeared to show a vertical device list. In that layout the PC battery comes first, followed by device names, percentages, and possibly charging and energy-saver indicators. Because the report came from unfinished assets, treat it as an early design rather than the shipped layout.
The same report suggested the widget might also appear on the lock screen. Microsoft’s October 7 announcement mentions only the Widgets board, so lock-screen support is not confirmed.

Why the peripheral question decides usefulness
A battery widget is only as useful as the number of devices it can report on. Microsoft has not said how the widget obtains battery data from each device, so support could vary by connection type and by manufacturer. Until Microsoft publishes a compatibility list, the safe assumption is that some peripherals will appear and others may not.
To test this yourself once the widget is available to you, add it and compare the entries against each device’s own battery indicator. Note which devices appear, whether the percentage matches, and whether the entry disappears when a device is turned off or disconnected. Those observations are the evidence Microsoft’s documentation does not yet provide.
The Bottom Line
The Battery Status widget addresses a real annoyance, but for now it is a preview for Windows Insiders on the Experimental channel. Watch Microsoft’s later Insider release notes for a compatible device list and any stable-release announcement before relying on it for devices you depend on.
