If Windows 11 says your fingerprint device could not be found, first check whether the sensor appears in Device Manager. A sensor that Windows cannot detect needs a different fix from one that appears but fails to read your finger. The message alone does not identify a single cause, so the next steps depend on whether the reader is built into the PC, attached to a keyboard, or connected by USB.

First, use another way to sign in

Sign in with your PIN or password while you troubleshoot. Windows Hello can offer more than one sign-in method, so a fingerprint problem does not necessarily prevent access to your account. Microsoft lists PIN as another Windows Hello option: Configure Windows Hello.

Identify which fingerprint reader you are troubleshooting

  • Built-in laptop reader: Check the PC maker’s support page for drivers specific to your exact model.
  • Detachable keyboard reader: If this is a Surface keyboard, detach and reattach it, then check the Surface-specific steps below.
  • External USB reader: Confirm that the reader is designed to work with Windows Hello and follow the maker’s connection instructions. Its compatibility with Enhanced sign-in security (ESS) may matter.

Microsoft says fingerprint sign-in requires a device with a fingerprint reader. That prerequisite does not mean a USB reader will repair a missing built-in sensor or fix a particular laptop’s detection error. Check the existing sensor’s status and identify your PC model before considering a purchase.

Check whether Windows detects the sensor

  1. Open Device Manager: Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Look for the fingerprint device: Expand the relevant device categories and check whether the reader appears. Its category and name vary by hardware.
  3. Inspect its status: If the device appears, open its properties and note any error code or status message. Use Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance for the reported code.
  4. Check for the correct driver: If Windows cannot provide a requested driver, consult the support page for your PC or fingerprint-sensor manufacturer. Choose a driver for the exact model; do not install a package just because it mentions fingerprints.

If the sensor does not appear, or Device Manager reports an error, focus on detection and the model-specific driver or support guidance. If it appears without an error but cannot read a finger, move to the recognition steps below.

For an external reader, check ESS and your Windows version

Microsoft says some external or third-party fingerprint readers may not work with Windows Hello when Enhanced sign-in security (ESS) is enabled unless the reader supports ESS. The applicable instructions differ between Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer and version 23H2. Check Microsoft’s current third-party fingerprint reader guidance for the version-specific steps. Availability can depend on rollout and organizational policy.

Microsoft describes disabling ESS as a possible way to use a non-ESS reader. Treat that as a security trade-off, not a routine first step: disabling ESS removes existing ESS enrollments and their associated credentials, which can be reprovisioned afterward. A work or school policy may also prevent use of non-ESS devices. Check whether the reader supports ESS and whether your organization permits the change before proceeding.

If Windows detects the reader but your finger is not recognized

These steps address scanning or recognition failures; they do not establish the cause of a message saying the device itself could not be found.

If the fingerprint reader is on a Surface device

Use the Surface branch only for Surface hardware. Check for device driver and firmware updates in the Surface app. If Windows Hello still fails, sign in with your PIN or password and set up Hello again. For a detachable keyboard with a fingerprint reader, detach and reattach the keyboard. Follow Microsoft’s Surface fingerprint reader troubleshooting.

Before buying a replacement reader

A Windows Hello-compatible USB reader may be an option if your PC lacks a usable fingerprint reader. Before buying, check these points:

  • Whether the reader supports Windows Hello and, if ESS is enabled, ESS.
  • Whether your Windows 11 version has the applicable setup path.
  • Whether your organization allows an external reader or a non-ESS device.
  • Whether the built-in sensor appears in Device Manager and what status or error it reports.

A USB reader is not an established fix for a built-in sensor that Windows cannot find. The right next step depends on the PC model, reader model, Windows version, Device Manager status, and any organization policy.
