If File Explorer crashes when you right-click in Windows 11, first restart the PC and install available Windows updates. Then check whether the crash happens with every item or only a particular file, folder, or location. That comparison helps narrow the issue, but right-clicking alone does not prove that a context-menu extension—or any other single component—is at fault.
Start with a restart and a clear symptom check
Before changing settings, note exactly what triggers the crash. Test whether it happens with every file and folder, only one file type, only in a particular location such as a network drive, or only after you choose “Show more options.” These comparisons help define the problem; none identifies its cause by itself.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart again if Windows asks you to.
Microsoft includes restarting and checking for updates among its initial steps for File Explorer problems. See Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance.
Record the crash in Event Viewer
If the crash continues, reproduce it once and inspect the Application log. The record can preserve details that are useful to support staff, but a faulting module name is a clue—not proof of the underlying cause.

- Press Windows key + R, enter
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find an Application Error at the time of the crash. Note the timestamp, faulting application and module, event ID, and any other details shown.
Microsoft’s shell troubleshooting guidance identifies Application log events 1000 and 1001 as potentially relevant to crashes involving Explorer and related processes. See Microsoft’s shell experience troubleshooting documentation.
Compare Safe Mode or a clean boot
Programs that integrate with File Explorer—such as cloud-sync clients, archive utilities, security software, or other tools—are plausible suspects when a crash occurs as a menu opens. This is a diagnostic possibility, not a confirmed explanation for your PC. Microsoft does not provide a right-click-specific repair procedure in the cited material.

Use Safe Mode or a clean boot to compare behavior with a limited set of drivers and services or with non-Microsoft startup components excluded. If right-clicking stops crashing in that state, something absent from the test environment may be involved; the result does not name the exact program or component. Microsoft explains Safe Mode and related startup options in its Safe Mode guidance.

- If using a clean boot, restore non-Microsoft startup items in groups and retest after each group to narrow down the conflict.
- Do not delete registry entries or disable unfamiliar Windows components as a shortcut.
Repair Windows files if other problems point to corruption
If Explorer still crashes or other Windows features are malfunctioning too, run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC). Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowDISM can repair the Windows image, while SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies from its cache. Read the result from each command. These repairs do not remove a faulty third-party context-menu handler. Follow Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions.
Check update history when the timing fits
If the right-click crash began immediately after a Windows update, record the Windows version and update history, then check the relevant Microsoft release-health information. Update removal may be worth considering when the timing matches, but it is not a general first-line fix. Microsoft recommends trying the least disruptive recovery option first; back up important files before recovery steps that could affect data. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Do not confuse separate, environment-specific Explorer issues
Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview-update note describes desktop-loading problems seen primarily on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix. In that specific scenario, users may see Explorer crashes; the note documents manually launching explorer.exe as a temporary mitigation and Known Issue Rollback for managed enterprise systems. This does not establish a general cause for a consumer PC’s right-click crash. See the September 22, 2026 release-health note.

A separate September 8, 2026 note concerns desktop-loading problems after specified updates on Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Match the version, update history, and broader symptoms before connecting that issue to a right-click crash. If Explorer closes, reopen it as a temporary workaround
If the desktop or taskbar remains usable, you can start Explorer again:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Run new task.
- Enter
explorer.exeand press Enter.
This can bring the desktop shell back, but it is not a guaranteed repair for a right-click crash. Microsoft documents it as a temporary workaround for the specific September 2026 desktop-loading issue described above.
When to escalate
If the crash persists after the startup comparison and relevant system repairs, keep the Event Viewer record and send feedback through Feedback Hub or contact your device vendor’s support team. Include what kind of item triggers the crash, whether it occurs in Safe Mode or a clean boot, and the relevant log details. Microsoft recommends Feedback Hub when its basic File Explorer troubleshooting steps do not improve reliability.
