Turn on Enhanced indexing if you regularly search for files outside Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop. Keep Classic if those folders cover your needs. Enhanced searches more locations across the PC, but Microsoft says whole-PC indexing may use more resources and affect CPU consumption or battery life. There is no published universal slowdown figure, so the practical choice depends on where your files are and how much broader search coverage matters to you.
What Enhanced indexing changes
Windows Search builds an index of files and their properties so it can return results without scanning every file from scratch for each query. Microsoft compares the index to a book’s index: it helps Windows find relevant information faster.
Microsoft’s documented setting is in Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, under Find my files. The title’s reference to Advanced File Explorer Options may not match the current Settings location; labels and interface details can change with Windows updates.
| Option | What it indexes | When it fits | Resource considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop by default. | Your files are mainly in those folders and search results are adequate. | Microsoft describes it as balancing search performance and system resource use. |
| Enhanced | The entire PC, including all user folders and files. | You often search for files stored outside Classic’s default locations. | May use more system resources; searching the whole PC may affect CPU consumption and battery life. |
| Customized locations | Locations you choose to include in indexing. | You want to cover particular additional folders without indexing the entire PC. | Lets you limit coverage; Microsoft does not provide a numerical resource comparison for this option. |
Microsoft’s description is explicit: “Enhanced mode indexes your entire PC, including all user folders and files.” Microsoft Support: Search indexing in Windows.

Which setting should you choose?
Choose Enhanced for files scattered across the PC
Enhanced is the better fit if you save work in varied user folders or other locations and want Windows Search to cover them. Its benefit is broader coverage, not a guaranteed improvement in every search or a quantified speed increase.
Keep Classic if its coverage is enough
If your files are mostly in Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop, and searches find what you need, Classic avoids expanding indexing to the whole PC. You do not need to enable Enhanced simply because it is available.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Customize locations for a middle ground
If you have a few important folders outside the Classic defaults, customize indexed locations rather than indexing the entire PC. Microsoft’s Searching Windows guidance describes adjusting which locations are included. Microsoft Support: Windows Search and Privacy.
How to reduce what Windows indexes
Windows also lets you choose whether file types are indexed by properties alone or by properties and content. Properties-only indexing can retain filename and property searches without indexing the contents of those files. Microsoft says this can reduce index size, but content searches for those file types will no longer work, which can make some files harder to find.

The exact controls can vary as Windows changes. Look in Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows for indexing options and file-type controls.
What to expect after switching modes
Microsoft says an initial indexing run can take up to a couple of hours; that is not a guarantee for every PC. Afterward, Windows indexes updated data in the background. Give the first run time to complete before judging whether broader search coverage is working as expected. Microsoft Support: Search indexing in Windows.

Performance, battery, and index size
Microsoft warns that Enhanced may use more system resources and that searching the entire PC may affect CPU consumption and battery life. Its guidance does not give a general benchmark or a fixed slowdown estimate. The actual effect can depend on the PC and workload, so avoid assuming that Enhanced will noticeably slow every computer.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft gives a rule of thumb that the Windows Search index will be less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files. It cautions that the index can take a larger proportion when it includes many very small files (under 4 KB) or computer code; the figure is not a universal guarantee. What Microsoft says about privacy on Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft says data gathered from semantic indexing on Copilot+ PCs is stored locally, is not stored by Microsoft, and is not used to train AI models. That statement applies to the semantic-indexing data described in its documentation, not every kind of Windows indexing or every third-party app. Microsoft also notes that installed apps may add information to the index.
