Windows 11’s standard dark mode changes the colors of Windows itself, including the taskbar, Start menu, File Explorer, Settings, Action Center, and Windows Console. It also affects many Microsoft Store apps, but it cannot force every installed desktop app to use a dark theme.
The normal setting is found at Settings > Personalization > Colors. From there, you can either make Windows and compatible apps dark together or use Custom mode to control them separately.
How to turn on dark mode in Windows 11
- Open Settings. You can press Windows logo key + I, or select Start > Settings.
- Select Personalization > Colors.
- Find Choose your mode.
- Select Dark.
Windows applies the change immediately; you do not need to restart the computer, run a command, or edit the registry.

How to force Windows dark but keep apps light
If you want the taskbar, Start menu, and other Windows controls dark while keeping documents and most apps light, use Custom mode:

- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Under Choose your mode, select Custom.
- Set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark.
- Set Choose your default app mode to Light.
This is usually the best option if dark menus are easier on your eyes but you prefer white backgrounds in Word, browsers, or other productivity software.
How to force supported apps to use dark mode
To make Windows elements light and supported apps dark, select Custom, then use the reverse combination:
- Choose your default Windows mode: Light
- Choose your default app mode: Dark
These settings are defaults, not a universal override. An application can define its own appearance and may ignore Windows’ app-mode setting entirely. Some older desktop programs have no dark theme, while others provide a separate setting in their preferences.

Microsoft 365 applications can use a theme separate from Windows 11. In Word, Excel, Outlook, or another Microsoft 365 app:
- Select File > Options > General.
- Find Office Theme.
- Select Black for the darkest Microsoft 365 theme.
Alternatively, select Use system setting so Microsoft 365 switches between its light and dark themes according to Windows’ mode.

The Black theme can also darken the page or message background. If you want the application interface dark but the working page white, use the relevant option:
- Word: Go to File > Options > General, then under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, select Never change the document page color.
- Outlook: Go to File > Options > General, then under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, select Never change the message background color.
Why some apps stay light
Windows dark mode changes Windows components and many Microsoft Store apps, not every application installed on the PC. Software can choose its own colors, use a separate theme control, or lack dark-mode support altogether.
For an app that remains light, look for settings named Theme, Appearance, Color scheme, or Dark mode. Common locations include the app’s Settings, Preferences, or Options menu. A Windows setting cannot reliably override an application that does not support dark colors.
Turn off transparency if dark menus look blurry
Dark mode and transparency are separate settings. If the taskbar, Start menu, or Action Center looks washed out or difficult to read:
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Turn Transparency effects off.
This makes those surfaces more opaque without disabling dark mode. It can improve legibility, especially when a bright wallpaper shows through the interface.

Do not confuse dark mode with Night light
Night light changes the screen’s color temperature, usually making whites appear warmer. It does not switch Windows’ interface to dark colors. Its setting is at Settings > System > Display > Brightness and color > Night light.
Use Dark mode to change interface colors. Use Night light to reduce blue-toned, cool-looking screen light. They can be enabled independently or used together.
Dark mode versus contrast themes
If your goal is stronger separation between text, backgrounds, buttons, and other controls, use a contrast theme rather than ordinary dark mode:
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
- Select a theme from the Contrast themes menu.
- Select Apply.
To disable it, choose None from the same menu and select Apply. Windows may show a Please wait screen for several seconds while the colors change.
Contrast themes are an accessibility feature. They use more forceful color combinations than the normal Dark option and are not simply another name for dark mode.

Do not use Inverted color filters as dark mode
Windows 11 also includes color filters at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Color filters. You can open the accessibility settings quickly with Windows logo key + U, then select Color filters.
The Inverted filter reverses screen colors. It is not equivalent to dark mode and can change the appearance of colors such as red and green. Use it only when you specifically need an inverted display, not as the normal way to darken Windows.
Quick fixes when dark mode does not look right

| The screen colors look strange | Check Accessibility > Color filters and turn off an enabled filter. Also check whether a contrast theme is active. |
Can you force dark mode with PowerShell or the registry?
You do not need PowerShell, Command Prompt, a registry edit, or a restart to enable Windows 11’s standard dark mode. Microsoft’s supported procedure uses Settings > Personalization > Colors.
Registry workarounds may change Windows theme values, but they do not guarantee that third-party applications will become dark. They can also create confusing results when an app has its own appearance setting. Use the graphical setting first; use an individual app’s theme control for programs that do not follow Windows.

What is the fastest way to enable dark mode?
Press Windows logo key + I, select Personalization > Colors, and set Choose your mode to Dark.
Can I make Windows dark while keeping apps light?
Yes. Select Custom under Choose your mode, set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark, and set Choose your default app mode to Light.
Why did dark mode not change Microsoft Word?
Microsoft 365 has its own Office Theme setting. In Word, go to File > Options > General and select Black or Use system setting under Office Theme.
Is Night light the same as dark mode?
No. Night light warms the screen’s color temperature. Dark mode changes interface colors through Settings > Personalization > Colors.
How do I disable dark mode?
Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and select Light under Choose your mode. If Custom is selected, set the Windows and app modes individually.
