Turning off Windows 11 animations may make menus and transitions feel more immediate, but it is not a proven way to make an older PC process tasks faster. Microsoft says visual effects can use system resources, while cautioning that older computers may not see significant gains from general performance changes. The setting is quick to test and easy to reverse, so judge it by how your own PC feels.

What turning off animations changes

The Windows 11 Animation effects switch changes how parts of the interface move during actions such as opening or closing items. With the effects off, transitions are less animated and can seem more immediate. That is a change in perceived responsiveness, not proof that applications launch faster or demanding tasks finish sooner.

Microsoft explains that animations can provide feedback, show relationships between objects, preview an action’s result, or draw attention to a change. Its Win32 UX guidance says, “While any transition has the potential for making an action appear faster, the primary purpose of these transitions is to improve the perception of performance and responsiveness.” Microsoft’s animation and transition guidance is about interface design, not a benchmark of this Windows 11 setting.

How to disable Animation effects

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Choose Visual effects.
  4. Turn Animation effects off.

This is the current Windows 11 path documented by Microsoft Support. Labels or navigation may change in later releases. To restore the animated interface, return to the same setting and turn Animation effects on.

Will it make an older PC faster?

Microsoft notes that Windows visual effects can use system resources. That makes disabling them a reasonable low-effort experiment, especially if you find interface transitions distracting or sluggish. But Microsoft’s general PC performance guidance also cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from general optimization steps.

The available sources do not provide a measured percentage or a controlled performance result for the Animation effects switch by itself. Do not expect a guaranteed improvement in app loading, gaming, or other processing-heavy work. Whether the interface feels better is best judged on your own machine.

Choose based on what matters to you

Choice What you may prefer Trade-off
Keep animations on Smoother transitions and the visual feedback or cues animations can provide. Transitions may feel less immediate to you.
Turn animations off A more direct-feeling interface and fewer moving effects. You lose some transition and feedback cues; a measurable speed gain is not established.

Try the switch during your normal use and notice whether navigation feels more comfortable. If the reduced motion makes the interface harder to follow or you prefer the smoother transitions, turn it back on. This setting is a preference-level test, not a substitute for diagnosing a separate performance problem.
