Windows 11 Insider Preview build 26340.9596, released to the Experimental channel on October 2, 2026, adds a direct Cloud Rebuild entry under Settings > System > Recovery. This is a new way to reach the existing recovery feature from Settings—not evidence of a new recovery engine or a changed recovery result.
The build is preview software, is being rolled out gradually to Insiders, and has no confirmed general-release date. Microsoft’s release notes are available at the Windows Insider release-notes page.
What Cloud Rebuild changes in build 26340.9596
On systems that receive the relevant rollout, Cloud Rebuild appears at:
Settings > System > Recovery
The change improves discoverability by placing the recovery route in the main Recovery settings page. The announcement does not establish a newly invented reinstall technology, different recovery outcome, or new requirements. It only confirms the additional Settings entry point.

Because the feature is in an Experimental Insider build and is rolling out gradually, two PCs running the same build may not show the entry at the same time.

Can you get Cloud Rebuild on a normal Windows 11 installation?
Not based on this announcement. Build 26340.9596 is an Insider Preview release for the Experimental channel, not a normal production update. The cited information does not say when the Settings entry will reach stable Windows 11, whether it will reach every edition, or whether Microsoft will leave the interface unchanged after testing.
Installing an Insider build also does not guarantee immediate access: Microsoft is distributing the changes gradually. If the entry is absent, that can mean the feature has not reached your device rather than that Recovery is malfunctioning.

What to check if the entry is missing
- Confirm that the PC is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program’s Experimental channel and is actually running build 26340.9596.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery and check whether Cloud Rebuild has appeared.
- Allow for a staged rollout; the release notes do not provide a switch that forces the entry to appear.
- Do not treat the absence of the entry as proof that Cloud Rebuild has been removed or that the installation is damaged.
Known installation problem: error 0x80073712
Microsoft’s notes warn that some Insiders may be unable to install the latest update and may see error 0x80073712. Microsoft suspects Windows Sandbox may be involved and suggests disabling Windows Sandbox as a workaround. The warning applies to some preview installations, not to every PC running Windows 11.
Suggested workaround
- If the update repeatedly fails with 0x80073712, temporarily disable the Windows Sandbox feature in Windows Features.
- Restart Windows, then check Windows Update again.
- Re-enable Sandbox after the update only if you need it and the system is stable.
The release notes do not establish that Sandbox is the definitive cause, so disabling it should be treated as a reported workaround rather than a guaranteed fix. Keep a recovery plan before changing optional Windows features on a test machine.

What this build does—and does not—promise
- Established: a Cloud Rebuild entry is being added to Settings > System > Recovery for the Experimental Insider build.
- Established: the rollout is gradual, and the build also includes the Explorer, Settings and Unicode changes listed above.
- Not established: a new recovery technology, a different recovery result, universal availability, or a date for release to stable Windows 11.
- Preview risk: update installation failures, including reported 0x80073712 cases, can occur while the build is being tested.
