Yes. Every Windows 11 22H2 edition covered by Microsoft’s lifecycle notices has now passed its security-update deadline. Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and SE stopped receiving updates on October 8, 2024. Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise stopped on October 14, 2025. The correct next step depends on your edition, whether the PC is managed by an organization, and whether it meets the requirements for a newer Windows 11 release.

Which Windows 11 22H2 editions are unsupported?

Microsoft’s deadlines were not identical for every edition:

Windows 11 22H2 edition End of updates Status on September 30, 2026
Home October 8, 2024 Security updates ended
Pro October 8, 2024 Security updates ended
Pro Education October 8, 2024 Security updates ended
Pro for Workstations October 8, 2024 Security updates ended
SE October 8, 2024 Security updates ended
Enterprise October 14, 2025 Security updates ended
Education October 14, 2025 Security updates ended
IoT Enterprise October 14, 2025 Security updates ended

These are end-of-updates dates, not predictions. After the applicable date, Microsoft no longer provides the normal security updates for that 22H2 edition. A work or school computer can also be subject to an organization’s own deployment schedule, so ask your IT administrator before changing it.

How to confirm your edition and version

Use Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then About.
  3. Under Windows specifications, note Edition and Version.

If the device is managed by a company or school, the displayed edition is only part of the answer. Your administrator may control which feature update is approved and when it can be installed.

What Microsoft recommends next

Microsoft advises installing the latest Windows 11 version available for your particular edition and device before the installed version reaches end of servicing. Windows 11 receives one feature version each year. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of servicing, while Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months, counted from the relevant release. Because release availability and lifecycle details change, use Microsoft’s current lifecycle information to select the supported destination version rather than assuming every PC should move to the same build.

Safest upgrade path for a personal PC

1. Check hardware eligibility

Microsoft’s PC Health Check app can assess whether the computer qualifies for Windows 11. Eligibility is device-specific; a different PC, edition or configuration can produce a different result.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

2. Look in Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. If a feature upgrade is offered for that device, follow the on-screen instructions and restart when prompted.

Windows Update is Microsoft’s recommended route when it offers the upgrade. An offer may not appear immediately. Rollouts are staged, and Microsoft can place a temporary compatibility hold on a device while it investigates or resolves a known issue. Missing an offer does not by itself prove that the PC is permanently ineligible.

3. Back up before installing

Back up important documents, photos and other irreplaceable data before beginning. Microsoft says the default upgrade experience is designed to move files and data, but the installation method matters: booting from installation media for a fresh install can erase personal files and applications.

If Windows Update does not offer an upgrade

Personal, unmanaged computer

  • Run PC Health Check and address any stated hardware or configuration requirement.
  • Install all currently offered updates, restart, and check Windows Update again.
  • Allow for staged rollout timing or a compatibility hold instead of forcing an unsupported installation.
  • Use Microsoft’s documented installation-media method only after deciding whether you need an in-place upgrade or a clean installation.

Managed work or school computer

Do not bypass organizational controls. Contact the IT administrator for the approved upgrade schedule, licensing requirements and recovery process. Microsoft’s consumer installation guidance is intended for devices that are not managed by an IT administrator.

Using a USB installation drive

A USB flash drive is optional, not a requirement for every 22H2 user. Microsoft documents creating Windows 11 installation media on a USB drive and, from an existing Windows installation, running the setup program to perform an upgrade. This is different from starting the computer from the USB to perform a clean installation.

Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a required brand, model or capacity for a USB drive. Most readers should check Windows Update first.

What happens if you keep running 22H2?

The computer may continue to start and run existing software, but the 22H2 installation is outside Microsoft’s normal security-update support after its edition’s deadline. That leaves the operating system without the security fixes Microsoft publishes for supported versions. The lifecycle notices do not provide a population-wide count of affected users or a numerical probability of compromise, so no responsible article can assign one.

Microsoft’s support position

For the listed Home and Pro 22H2 editions after their end-of-updates date, Microsoft states: “Customers who contact Microsoft Support after this date will be directed to update their device to the latest version of Windows 11 to remain supported.” The same practical direction applies: identify the edition, check the device’s eligibility, and move to a currently supported Windows 11 release through the appropriate managed or personal-PC process.
