Windows 10 still runs, but standard support for Windows 10 version 22H2 ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, check your specific PC with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app: if it qualifies, you can generally upgrade from Windows 10 Home or Pro to the equivalent Windows 11 edition at no charge. If it does not qualify, consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) may provide a temporary security-update bridge, or you can replace the PC with a Windows 11-capable model.
What changed for Windows 10 in 2026?
End of support does not switch off Windows 10. Your PC and installed programs can continue to work, but version 22H2 no longer receives regular security updates, feature updates, or ordinary technical assistance through standard support. Microsoft warns that without regular security updates a device is more vulnerable to viruses and malware. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance explains the distinction.
Consumer ESU is separate from standard support. Microsoft currently describes consumer coverage through October 12, 2027, but the date and enrollment terms can vary by region and may change. Check the live Windows end-of-support page for the terms that apply where you live. ESU provides critical and important security updates, not new features, non-security fixes, or ordinary technical support.
Is your computer compatible with Windows 11?
Compatibility is determined by the particular PC, not simply its age or brand. Microsoft’s minimum requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. The system also needs UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and an HD (720p) display larger than 9 inches. Run Microsoft PC Health Check on the exact device to assess eligibility. Microsoft notes that the app does not check the graphics card or display, so those requirements may need separate verification. A PC meeting minimum requirements is eligible; that minimum is not a performance guarantee for demanding apps or workloads.
Windows 11 has higher requirements for some features, but they are not requirements for Windows 11 generally. For example, Microsoft’s current specifications list a compatible 40+ TOPS NPU, 16 GB of DDR5/LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD/UFS storage for Copilot+ PCs.

Can you upgrade from Windows 10 for free?
Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro installations can upgrade to the corresponding Windows 11 edition at no charge. For an upgrade offered through Windows Update, the PC must be running Windows 10 version 2004 or later and pass compatibility checks. The standard route is Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. If the upgrade is available for your PC, follow the on-screen offer. Install any offered Windows 10 servicing prerequisites first.

Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Internet access is also needed for updates and some features. Some Windows features have hardware requirements above the general OS minimum. Microsoft describes one feature release per year and monthly quality updates; servicing lasts 24 months per Home and Pro release, and 36 months per Enterprise, Enterprise multi-session, Education, and IoT Enterprise release. - Back up important files, and make sure you can access the accounts and recovery keys you may need.
- Confirm that critical applications and peripherals—such as printers, scanners, or specialist input devices—are supported by their vendors on Windows 11.
- Run PC Health Check or consult the PC manufacturer’s compatibility information. Check the processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics, and display.
- Consider interface and feature changes that could affect your routine. The Start layout is not resizable, taskbar alignment is limited to the bottom, and Live Tiles and Tablet Mode are absent.
- If you use Windows Mail, Calendar, or People, note that support for those apps ended December 31, 2024. Microsoft provides instructions for exporting local items; check its current guidance before changing devices.
How to upgrade an eligible PC
- Back up and prepare: Save important files, confirm account access and recovery keys, and check that essential apps and peripherals work with Windows 11.
- Check compatibility: Run Microsoft PC Health Check or consult the computer maker’s compatibility information. Review the system requirements, including any components the app does not check.
- Update Windows 10: Install available servicing updates and confirm the PC is running Windows 10 version 2004 or later if you plan to use Windows Update.
- Open Windows Update: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. If Microsoft offers Windows 11 for the eligible PC, follow the prompts to install the edition-matched upgrade.
- Verify after migration: Check Windows activation and Windows Update, then confirm drivers, restored backups, accessibility settings, and critical apps and peripherals work as expected.
What if the PC fails the compatibility check?
Use consumer ESU as a temporary bridge
For eligible personal-use devices, Microsoft lists three consumer enrollment options on its end-of-support page: syncing PC settings at no additional cost, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time $30 USD plus applicable tax. Availability and terms vary by region. ESU provides critical and important security updates only; it does not restore feature updates, non-security fixes, or ordinary technical support. Replace the PC if it needs to remain supported
If you need a supported Windows device beyond the ESU period, or the current PC cannot run essential software reliably, consider a Windows 11-capable replacement. Verify the exact model’s Windows 11 eligibility and processor support rather than relying on its advertised age or appearance. Enterprise, LTSC, and managed devices can follow different lifecycle and licensing rules; check with your organization’s administrator or the applicable Microsoft lifecycle information.
