To get multiple monitors working smoothly in Windows 10, first match the display diagram to your physical screens, then choose a display mode with Windows key + P. You can move an active window between monitors with Windows key + Shift + Left/Right Arrow, and use Snap and virtual desktops to organize your work. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; these instructions describe Windows 10’s built-in controls.
Identify and arrange your monitors
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify. A number appears on each screen. Match those numbers to the display tiles in Settings.
- Drag the numbered tiles to reflect how the monitors sit on your desk, then select Apply.
- Move the pointer across the screens. It should cross between displays at the edges that match their physical positions.
If the diagram does not match the desk layout, pointer movement between screens can feel misaligned. Microsoft’s Windows 10 multiple-monitor instructions cover identifying, arranging, and detecting displays.
Choose what appears on each screen
Press Windows key + P to open the projection menu. Microsoft identifies this as the shortcut for changing what appears on your displays.

These choices are distinct: Duplicate mirrors one image, while Extend provides room to place separate windows. PC screen only and Second screen only each leave just one of the displays active.

Move a window to another monitor
Make the window active, then press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow. Windows moves the window to another monitor in the indicated direction. If it lands somewhere unexpected, check that the numbered display tiles are arranged correctly.
Set scale, resolution, and orientation per display
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select the display tile you want to adjust. Confirm that the intended screen is selected before changing its settings.
- Choose text and app scale, resolution, or orientation for that display. Microsoft recommends starting with the resolution marked Recommended.
A resolution below the display’s native resolution can make text less sharp. Depending on the display, the picture may also appear small and centered, have black borders, or look stretched. For portrait use, change the orientation setting and physically rotate the monitor; changing the setting alone does not turn the screen.

Snap windows into a useful layout
To place a window against one side or in a corner, drag it to the screen edge or corner, or select it and press Windows key + an arrow key. When you snap a window, Snap Assist can show thumbnails of other open windows so you can choose one to fill the remaining space.

These controls organize windows on the displays you already have; they do not add physical screen space. Microsoft describes snapping and other multitasking options in its Windows 10 multiple-monitor guide and multitasking guide.
Use virtual desktops for separate workspaces
Virtual desktops let you group apps into separate workspaces. They are not additional physical monitors.

- Open Task View: Windows key + Tab
- Create a desktop: Windows key + Ctrl + D
- Switch desktops: Windows key + Ctrl + Left Arrow or Right Arrow
- Close the current desktop: Windows key + Ctrl + F4
When you close a virtual desktop, its open apps move to another available desktop. If you use several desktops, Windows also lets you choose whether the taskbar and Alt+Tab show windows from only the current desktop or from all desktops. - Check that the monitor cable is connected to the PC or dock.
- In Start > Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays and select Detect.
- For a wireless display, use Connect to a wireless display from System > Display.
Port and device compatibility varies, and Microsoft’s instructions do not establish which cable or dock works with a particular computer and monitor. Check the ports on both devices before choosing a cable; HDMI is not universal. Microsoft’s display setup page provides the detection steps.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. These monitor controls are described for Windows 10, but that date matters if you are deciding whether to keep relying on the operating system. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 display support page for the cited display instructions.
