If Windows 10 says “Your device has reached the end of service” or “You’re not receiving security updates,” the notice may refer to an outdated Windows version or failed updates—not simply the end of Windows 10 support. Microsoft’s standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, but the distinction matters: the PC will keep working, while standard security updates and technical support have stopped. Check the exact message and your update status before deciding whether to upgrade, enroll in Extended Security Updates, or replace the PC.

Why the messages can be misleading

“End of service” and “end of support” sound like the same warning, but they can describe different things. Microsoft’s general Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Separately, Windows can show device-specific notices when an installed Windows 10 version is out of service or the PC has gone a significant time without successfully updating.

Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that every appearance of these notices is an error or part of a universal mistaken rollout. The wording can nevertheless confuse users because it may point to the installed version or update history rather than a sudden failure of the computer. The notice alone also does not prove that the PC is incompatible with Windows 11.

What each Windows 10 message means

“Your device has reached the end of service”

Microsoft says this notice may appear when the installed Windows 10 version is out of service and the device has not received an update for a significant time. Windows may have tried to update several times; hardware limitations can also be relevant to whether the device can receive an update. Microsoft says, “Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11.” Microsoft’s explanation of this notification does not, by itself, establish that the entire computer fails Windows 11’s requirements.

“You’re not receiving security updates”

This is a separate notification with its own causes. Microsoft says Windows 10 versions have an 18-month support period and advises users to install the latest available Windows 10 version. Driver problems, insufficient disk space, or other issues can prevent updates from installing, so this message can indicate an update problem as well as an out-of-service version. Microsoft’s guidance for the security-updates notice recommends troubleshooting the update path before concluding the device cannot be updated.

What changed on October 14, 2025

Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, standard support no longer includes free software updates, technical assistance, or security updates. The operating system does not stop functioning: Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to work, even though standard support has ended. Microsoft’s current support page distinguishes continued functionality from continued support.

Check your Windows version and update status

  1. Read the exact notification. Note whether it says “Your device has reached the end of service” or “You’re not receiving security updates.” The messages have separate Microsoft guidance and may point to different update conditions.
  2. Check Windows Update. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and review the installed version and any failed or pending updates. For an eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 device, Microsoft says to select Check for updates there to check for a Windows 11 upgrade.
  3. Check Windows 11 eligibility. Use the PC Health Check app or compare the PC with Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements and end-of-support guidance. A device-specific update notice is not a substitute for this compatibility check.
  4. Investigate update failures. Microsoft identifies driver issues and low disk space among possible obstacles. Follow the troubleshooting guidance for the message you received; if the problem persists, Microsoft also lists help from a qualified repair technician or reinstalling Windows 10 as possible actions.

Choose the next step for your PC

Option When it fits What it provides
Upgrade to Windows 11 Your PC meets Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements and you want to keep using it. For Windows 10 version 22H2 devices that meet the requirements, Microsoft says the upgrade is free. Check through Windows Update or PC Health Check.
Enroll in consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) You want to keep the current Windows 10 PC for longer and need a security-update extension. ESU provides enrolled devices with critical and important security updates; Microsoft’s current support page says consumer coverage can protect a device until October 12, 2027. It extends security updates, not full standard support.
Replace the PC The device cannot upgrade to Windows 11 and you do not want to use ESU. Microsoft lists replacing an ineligible device with a Windows 11 PC as an option. Replacement is not necessary for every person who sees a notification.

Microsoft’s transition guide describes ESU as a way to receive critical and important security updates for at least one year after support ended; its current Windows 10 support page gives October 12, 2027 as the consumer ESU endpoint. These updates do not restore standard Windows 10 support.

What to do if the notice remains

If Windows Update cannot install the latest available version, use the troubleshooting steps linked from the relevant Microsoft notification page. Microsoft also suggests consulting a qualified repair technician or reinstalling Windows 10 where appropriate. If Windows 11 compatibility checks show the device is ineligible, decide whether the ESU security-update extension meets your needs or whether replacing the computer is preferable.
