Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you still use it without Extended Security Updates (ESU), the main concerns are increased security exposure, no ongoing Microsoft support or operating-system fixes, and possible Microsoft 365 Apps reliability issues over time. Your PC does not stop working on that date; Microsoft says the software continues to function.
What Windows 10 end of support means now
For covered Windows 10 devices, Microsoft no longer provides operating-system security updates, software updates, or technical support. October 14, 2025 was the end of support—not a shutdown date. Microsoft’s FAQ answers “Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?” with: “No. Support for Windows 10 is discontinued, but the software will continue to function.” Microsoft Support.
Three risks of continuing without ESU
1. Increased exposure to viruses and malware
Without regular Microsoft security fixes for Windows 10, newly discovered weaknesses in the operating system may remain unpatched. Microsoft says devices are more vulnerable to viruses and malware after support ends. This is a qualitative warning, not a measured probability: Microsoft’s cited guidance does not quantify an individual owner’s chance of being compromised or give an exact increase in risk.
2. No ongoing Microsoft fixes or technical support for Windows 10
Unsupported Windows 10 no longer receives the covered Microsoft operating-system updates, and users should not expect Microsoft technical support for issues with that OS. This is distinct from whether the computer still runs: the system can continue functioning, but Microsoft is no longer maintaining it as a supported release.

3. Microsoft 365 Apps may become less reliable over time
Microsoft 365 Apps support on Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the apps will continue to run and receive security updates through October 10, 2028, but warns that performance and reliability issues may arise over time. That commitment applies to Microsoft 365 Apps; it does not establish when other software will stop being supported or working. Microsoft Learn: Windows 10 support and Microsoft 365 Apps.
Choose a path: upgrade, use ESU temporarily, or replace the PC
The right choice depends on whether your computer meets Windows 11 requirements, how long you need a bridge, whether your work requires a supported operating system, and whether replacement’s cost and capability tradeoffs make sense for you.

Upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11
Check eligibility with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or review the Windows 11 system requirements. Microsoft says an upgrade may be offered through Windows Update for an eligible PC. If your PC qualifies and your applications and peripherals work with Windows 11, upgrading is the direct way to move to a currently supported Windows release. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance.

Consumer Extended Security Updates can provide critical and important security updates for eligible personal-use Windows 10 devices for a limited period. Microsoft’s current pages differ on the consumer end date: its support article says protection can continue until October 12, 2027, while its Windows end-of-support page gives October 13, 2026 as the standard consumer date and notes regional variations. Because those dates are not consistent across the surfaced official guidance, check your region and the enrollment terms presented on your PC rather than assuming either date applies to you. ESU is temporary security coverage; it does not make Windows 10 a fully supported current Windows release. Microsoft Support · Microsoft Windows end-of-support guidance.

Replace a PC that cannot upgrade
If your computer is not eligible for Windows 11, or you prefer a new device, Microsoft recommends choosing a PC that supports Windows 11. Replacement is an option, not a requirement for every Windows 10 owner. Compare what you need the computer to do with the cost and capabilities of a replacement; there is no single hardware price or recommendation that fits every situation. How to decide what to do
- Check Windows 11 eligibility. Use PC Health Check or Microsoft’s published system requirements.
- Consider how long you need a transition period. If you need time before upgrading or replacing the PC, check whether your device and region qualify for consumer ESU and read the enrollment terms shown for your device.
- Check requirements for your work and applications. If you need an operating system with ongoing Microsoft support, ESU is not a substitute for moving to a supported Windows release.
- Compare replacement against your actual needs. If the PC cannot upgrade, decide whether a Windows 11-capable replacement is worth the cost and whether it meets your performance, storage, and peripheral needs.
