Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) listing appeared in the Microsoft Store as Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. The Store was an additional access route—not the only one—and its October 2025 price and end date are no longer the terms to rely on. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance sends eligible users to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, where an ESU enrollment link appears when the PC qualifies. Consumer coverage is currently scheduled to continue through 12 October 2027.
What the Microsoft Store listing actually was
Windows Latest reported on 14 October 2025 that Microsoft had published a Microsoft Store product page titled Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU). The report described a $29.99 listing and a description promising coverage through 13 October 2026.
Those were the terms visible at that point in 2025. Microsoft’s current consumer pages now state that coverage runs through 12 October 2027, and they describe region-specific enrollment routes. The Store listing should therefore be treated as a historical news hook, not proof that the same price, date or purchase flow is available everywhere today.
How long consumer ESU lasts
Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Eligible consumer PCs enrolled in ESU can receive critical and important security updates through 12 October 2027, according to Microsoft’s current consumer guidance and its Windows Experience Blog update of 25 June 2026.

ESU is a post-support security entitlement. It does not restore normal Windows 10 support or turn Windows 10 into a continuing feature-development platform.
Who is eligible
Microsoft’s U.S. requirements apply to supported consumer editions of Windows 10 version 22H2:
- Windows 10 Home, Professional, Pro Education or Pro for Workstations
- The latest Windows update installed
- An administrator Microsoft account that is not a child account
The ESU license is associated with the Microsoft account used for enrollment. Microsoft says one consumer license can cover up to 10 eligible devices, with each additional PC meeting the same prerequisites.
Devices and uses excluded from the consumer program
- Commercial-use scenarios
- Kiosk devices
- Devices joined to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra
- Devices enrolled in Mobile Device Management
- Devices that already have an ESU license
Microsoft notes that Microsoft Entra-registered devices can use the consumer program. If an enrolled PC later enters one of the listed commercial scenarios, Microsoft says consumer enrollment is suspended until that situation ends.
How to enroll from Windows Update
Microsoft’s documented workflow is in Windows 10 itself rather than requiring the Store page:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select the ESU enrollment link if Microsoft offers it for the device.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that will hold the license, if prompted.
- Choose an available enrollment route and complete the confirmation steps.
If the link does not appear, the PC may not meet the edition, version, update, account or usage requirements, or the offer may not be available in that region. A local-account user may be asked to sign in to a Microsoft account. Once any user enrolls a PC, Microsoft says other users on that same PC are protected.

These are routes into the same consumer ESU program, not different security tiers.
Recommended Free Tools
| Region | Route | Cost or ongoing requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Sync PC settings | No additional cost | Requires the Microsoft account and settings-sync route offered during enrollment. |
| United States | Microsoft Rewards | 1,000 Rewards points | Availability depends on the account and Microsoft’s current offer. |
| United States | One-time purchase | $30 USD or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax | Equivalent pricing and availability can vary by market. |
| European Economic Area | Continue signing in with the enrollment Microsoft account | No additional cost | Microsoft says updates may stop after up to 60 days without a sign-in; re-enrollment is then required. |
| European Economic Area | One-time purchase while retaining a local Windows account | $30 USD or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax | This is the EEA description of the cash route; do not assume U.S. settings-sync or Rewards terms apply. |
Microsoft’s pages use different terms for the United States and the EEA. The U.S. page lists settings sync, Rewards points and a cash purchase. The EEA page describes account sign-in at no additional cost or a cash purchase for people who want to keep using a local account.
What ESU includes—and what it does not
Included
Microsoft describes ESU as delivery of critical and important security updates through Windows Update as those updates become available.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an ESU-enrolled PC still upgrade to Windows 11?
Yes. Enrollment does not block a Windows 11 upgrade when the PC meets Windows 11’s hardware eligibility requirements. ESU does not waive those requirements, so a computer that fails the hardware checks should not be treated as Windows 11-ready merely because it has ESU.
What to do if the enrollment link is missing
- Confirm that the PC reports Windows 10 version 22H2.
- Install all currently offered Windows updates and restart.
- Check that the edition is Home, Professional, Pro Education or Pro for Workstations.
- Use an administrator Microsoft account that is not a child account.
- Check whether the PC is managed, domain-joined, a kiosk or already covered by another ESU license.
- Verify the device’s region and account arrangement, especially if you are in the EEA or use a local Windows account.
After these checks, return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Microsoft’s current pages do not establish that the Store listing remains available in every geography or that it provides the same flow as Windows Update.
Is consumer ESU worth using?
ESU is most useful as a time-limited bridge for an eligible PC that cannot be replaced or upgraded immediately. It buys security-update coverage through 12 October 2027, but it does not add features or support and does not change Windows 11 hardware compatibility. If the PC can run Windows 11, upgrading remains the longer-term path. If it cannot, use ESU as temporary protection while planning a replacement or another supported operating system.
