Windows 10 version 21H2 Enterprise and Education stopped receiving security updates after June 11, 2024. The same date applies to Enterprise multi-session and IoT Enterprise 21H2. Organizations still using these general-availability editions should migrate to a supported Windows version or use Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a temporary security bridge.

When did Windows 10 21H2 Enterprise and Education reach end of support?

Microsoft says Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2, Enterprise multi-session 21H2, Education 21H2, and IoT Enterprise 21H2 no longer receive security updates after June 11, 2024. Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement gives that date for the November 2021 general-availability editions.

The lifecycle table records retirement at June 12, 2024, 6:59:59 a.m. Pacific Time. That timestamp is the same cutoff expressed in a different time zone; it does not mean support continued for an additional day. Windows 10 22H2 was the final general Windows 10 version, and its general support ended October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle page.

What end of support means for a 21H2 device

After the cutoff, Microsoft no longer supplies security updates for the affected general-availability editions. Microsoft Education describes end of support as the end of bug fixes, vulnerability fixes, time-zone updates, and technical support for problems that may occur. See its Windows 10 end-of-support guidance.

That leaves a device increasingly exposed as new vulnerabilities are discovered. It may continue to start and run, but continued operation is not the same as being supported or receiving security fixes.

Check whether the device is LTSC before applying the date

Do not assume every Windows 10 product labeled 21H2 ended support on June 11, 2024. The date above applies to the general-availability editions named by Microsoft, not Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 or IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021.

Edition Support milestone What it means
Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2, Education 21H2, Enterprise multi-session 21H2, and IoT Enterprise 21H2 Security updates ended after June 11, 2024 General-availability editions covered by Microsoft’s end-of-servicing announcement.
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 (version 21H2) Mainstream support ended January 12, 2027 Microsoft lists no extended support for this edition.
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 Extended support ends January 13, 2032 A distinct IoT LTSC lifecycle; do not apply the general-availability 21H2 date.

Microsoft’s supported Windows versions table explicitly notes that Enterprise LTSC 2021 has no extended support. Confirm the edition installed on the device before planning a deadline; “21H2” alone is not enough to identify its lifecycle.

Options for organizations still using 21H2

Choose a migration route based on device compatibility, the time needed to deploy it, and whether a temporary security bridge is necessary.

Rank #3
Path Hardware fit Updates and features Cost and maintenance horizon
Upgrade to Windows 11 Suitable for PCs that meet Windows 11 requirements. Moves the device to a supported Windows version; feature servicing follows Windows 11 lifecycle terms. No separate ESU license is described for this route. Duration depends on the Windows 11 version deployed.
Replace incompatible PCs Use when existing hardware cannot run Windows 11. New Windows 11 hardware can be deployed on a supported version. Requires purchasing and deploying replacement devices; pricing varies by model and market.
Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop Can provide a cloud-hosted Windows environment where suitable to the organization. Microsoft identifies Windows 11 on a Cloud PC through Windows 365 as an education option. Deployment and ongoing costs depend on the selected service and configuration.
Windows 10 ESU Lets eligible devices remain on Windows 10 temporarily while migration proceeds. Provides monthly security updates only, with no feature or other updates. Temporary bridge; Microsoft education guidance states US-dollar pricing of $1, $2, and $4 per license for years one, two, and three, respectively. Regional prices vary.

Upgrade compatible PCs to Windows 11

For compatible devices, Microsoft Education recommends upgrading to Windows 11. Confirm each computer meets the requirements and that essential applications, peripherals, and management tools work with the target setup before a broad rollout.

Replace devices that do not meet requirements

If a PC cannot run Windows 11, plan replacement rather than treating unsupported 21H2 as a permanent endpoint. Microsoft lists purchasing modern Windows 11 PCs as an option. For a laptop or desktop purchase, verify the exact model’s Windows 11 eligibility, warranty, availability, and price.

Consider a cloud-hosted Windows desktop

For appropriate school and organizational workloads, Microsoft identifies Windows 11 on a Cloud PC through Windows 365 as an alternative. Azure Virtual Desktop may also fit some environments; assess application needs, connectivity, administration, and service costs before choosing a cloud route.

Use ESU only as a migration bridge

Windows 10 Extended Security Updates can provide monthly security updates after end of support, but do not restore feature updates or other normal servicing. Microsoft’s education guidance gives US-dollar prices of $1 per license for year one, $2 for year two, and $4 for year three; those stated prices are from April 2024 guidance and regional prices vary. ESU can buy time for migration, but it does not make an unsupported installation equivalent to a supported Windows release.

How to decide what to do next

  1. Identify the edition. Check whether each device runs general-availability 21H2 or an LTSC edition; the lifecycle dates differ.
  2. Inventory and assess hardware. Determine which PCs can move to Windows 11 and identify application or peripheral dependencies that need testing.
  3. Set the destination. Choose Windows 11 on existing hardware, replacement PCs, or a cloud desktop where that fits the workload.
  4. Use ESU selectively if needed. If migration cannot be completed immediately, evaluate ESU coverage and cost for the devices that need a temporary security-update bridge.
  5. Deploy and verify. Roll out the selected path, confirm devices are receiving updates under the destination’s servicing model, and retire remaining 21H2 devices or keep them within the appropriate LTSC lifecycle.
