Winamp’s goodbye headline refers to a shutdown announcement reported on November 20, 2013—not proof that Winamp is unavailable today. The notice said Winamp.com and related web services, along with downloads of Winamp Media players, would no longer be available after December 20, 2013. The current Winamp homepage presents the player and links to an app download.
What Winamp’s 2013 goodbye announcement said
In a November 20, 2013 article, Rob Williams of HotHardware reported a warning posted on Winamp’s official website. It read: “Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download.”
The wording described a planned end to the site’s associated web services and software downloads after December 20. It was not an announcement about a physical product, and it does not by itself establish what ultimately happened after that date.

Why the headline mentions a llama
The headline plays on Winamp’s memorable tagline, “Winamp, it really whips the Llama’s ass.” Williams recalled it as both a Winamp tagline and an audio sample included with the player. The phrase became shorthand for the distinctive personality of software many listeners used while digital music and MP3s were gaining popularity.

Is Winamp shutting down now?
The 2013 warning should not be read as a current shutdown notice. The official Winamp homepage, accessed October 4, 2026, presents Winamp as a player and links to an app download. That establishes a current product presence, but the page alone does not provide enough detail to verify current features, supported platforms, pricing, ownership history, or the full timeline of services since 2013.
What the 2013 article said about Winamp’s changing fortunes
Williams described Winamp as having a smaller audience than it once had, but supplied no usage figures or measured market data. His explanation was qualitative: smartphones and cloud streaming were changing how people listened to music, while some users who stayed with Winamp preferred classic 2.x versions or Winamp 5.x.
