Nick Lewis says he used Claude to help build plugins that give the classic Winamp player several modern features, including Windows media-key controls, track identification, newer-format playback, similar-song playlists and lyrics. His September 28, 2026, How-To Geek article describes a personal project—not an official Winamp release, a public download or a compatibility guide.
What Lewis says he built
The project keeps Winamp as the player and adds capabilities through plugins and connections to Windows and music-data services. In Lewis’s account, the integrations address functions that a modern player might provide directly, while leaving the familiar Winamp interface and library at the center.
His article describes the following features:
- Windows media-key controls and track details sent through System Media Transport Controls (SMTC).
- Track identification and tagging using AcoustID and MusicBrainz.
- Playback of additional audio formats through Windows Media Foundation.
- Playlists built from tracks similar to a selected song.
- A separate window for lyrics, including timed word highlighting when timing data is available.
How the integrations work
Media keys and track information
Lewis says he created a plugin that connects Winamp to Windows System Media Transport Controls, or SMTC. This lets him control playback with standard media keys. The plugin also sends track details through SMTC; he reports that connected devices, such as a car receiver, displayed the song information.

Identifying music and adding tags
The project uses AcoustID to identify unlabeled audio and MusicBrainz for music information. Lewis says this combination can identify a track, retrieve its details and cover art, and tag it in Winamp. He describes it as an alternative to Winamp’s earlier reliance on Gracenote for tagging, cover art and playlist functions.
The article does not provide identification match rates or explain how the plugin handles uncertain matches. Treat a result as something to review rather than assume every recording will be identified correctly.

Playing Opus and xHE-AAC
Lewis says he built a Media Foundation decoder so Winamp can use audio formats supported by Windows, naming Opus and xHE-AAC as examples. The design relies on Windows codec extensions and an extension list in Winamp. His broader description—that the approach can play anything Windows can play—is the author’s design claim, not a demonstrated universal compatibility result.

Building a playlist of similar tracks
A playlist generator draws on information from MusicBrainz, Last.fm and ListenBrainz, compares attributes of the current song with tracks in the local library, and creates a playlist. The menu action is labeled “Play tracks similar to.” Lewis does not explain the ranking weights or the algorithm, so the article establishes the feature’s described inputs and outcome—not how accurately it predicts a listener’s taste.
Opening lyrics while listening
A separate plugin fetches lyrics for the playing track and opens a lyrics window. Lewis says tracks without words are shown as “instrumental.” When the source data includes word-by-word timing, the plugin highlights words in sync with playback.

What the account does—and does not—establish
Lewis’s September 28, 2026, How-To Geek article is a first-person description of his project. A WindowsForum report published the same day likewise characterizes the work as a personal build and notes that no public download or binaries are described. Neither account provides enough material to independently reproduce or validate the implementation.

In particular, the articles do not publish the plugin code, binaries, complete test results, API details, account or API-key requirements, or a full explanation of what information may leave the computer when online services are used. They also do not identify the precise Windows and Winamp versions used. Those details remain unknown from the published accounts; the feature descriptions should not be mistaken for a tested installation procedure.
Why the source-code history matters
Lewis says Winamp source code briefly appeared on GitHub and was removed because it contained proprietary code. He reports that copies remained available and that one formed the starting point for his work. The secondary WindowsForum account adds licensing context, but neither source establishes that the personal build is officially authorized or available for others to use.
Because the articles do not provide a public project download, they are not instructions to obtain code from an unknown mirror. They also do not settle the licensing status of the starting materials or the resulting plugins.
What a Winamp user can take away
The project illustrates a particular approach: retain a legacy player, then extend it with plugins that connect to operating-system features, codec frameworks and music-data services. It shows what Lewis reports building with Claude’s help, but does not provide a ready-to-install product or evidence that another user can reproduce the same results from the published description.
