Winamp 5.9 Final Build 9999 arrived in 2022 after four years of development since Winamp 5.8. The long delay was mainly an engineering recovery: developers had to move the Windows player from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2019 and get the full application building again. The result added better Windows 11 compatibility, HTTPS streaming, podcast support, hi-res playback and refreshed codecs and libraries.
What happened to Winamp?
Winamp did not disappear permanently. Its 5.9 Final release returned in 2022, and the official release notice described it as “the culmination of 4 years’ work since the 5.8 release.” The project involved two development teams and a pandemic-related hiatus, which extended the time between the 5.8 era and the finished 5.9 build.
“Whip the llama” is Winamp’s long-running slogan and startup identity. In this context, the phrase refers to the player’s return after a long development cycle—not to a new hardware product.
Why did Winamp take four years to return?
The Visual Studio migration was the central obstacle
The largest technical task was moving the codebase from Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2019. That was more than a routine compiler update: the team had to refactor the project and restore a complete, buildable application after the toolchain change.

- 40-HOUR BATTERY AND FAST CHARGING - Up to 40 hours of music playback helps this device cover daily listening, road trips, flights and school days with less charging anxiety. The 4-inch IPS touch screen makes playlists, lyrics and videos easy to browse, while the built-in speaker, voice recorder and FM radio add everyday flexibility.
Development was split between teams
Winamp said two development teams worked on the release, with a pandemic-induced hiatus between periods of active development. That combination explains why the elapsed time was measured in years even though the release itself remained a Windows media-player update.
What changed in Winamp 5.9?
Build 9999 kept Winamp’s local-player role while modernizing important parts of the application. The release notes identify these changes:
Rank #2
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Improved support for Windows 11.
- Playback of HTTPS audio streams.
- A new podcast directory.
- Support for hi-res playback.
- Compiler refactoring associated with the newer development environment.
- Updated codecs and supporting libraries.
- An updated software development kit (SDK).
- Additional fixes and performance optimizations.
Operating-system requirement
Winamp 5.9 raised the minimum supported operating system to Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Windows 11 support was improved, but the release should not be described as a Windows-11-only player; its stated minimum is Windows 7 SP1.
Does Winamp still work on Windows 11?
Yes. Winamp 5.9 specifically includes improved Windows 11 support, so the 2022 Final Build 9999 is the relevant version for a current Windows installation. It also supports older systems back to Windows 7 SP1, subject to the usual compatibility of the individual computer, audio hardware and media files.

“Works on Windows 11” does not mean every old plug-in, skin or decoder is guaranteed to behave identically. Those components can have their own compatibility limits, while the player’s core release is the part covered by Winamp’s Windows 11 improvements.
What happened after the 5.9 release?
Winamp opened its Windows-player source code
On 24 September 2024, Winamp announced that the source code for its Windows player would be opened to developers worldwide. That invitation broadened community participation, but it did not transfer ownership of the official product. Winamp CEO Alexandre Saboundjian stated: “Winamp will remain the owner of the software and will decide on the innovations made in the official version.”

Community input has limits
The legacy-player product page describes the software as free and says Winamp plans two official releases each year. It also says future features are shaped by the community and the Llama Player Team under a non-commercial contract. Those statements describe a community-influenced development model, not an independently governed fork whose contributors control the official roadmap.

Where is Winamp heading in 2027?
On 29 July 2026, Winamp announced a strategic partnership with Deezer. Under the announcement, Deezer will supply white-label streaming technology and its global catalogue for a Winamp-branded premium subscription built into a new player. Winamp scheduled that player for release in the first half of 2027.
This is a planned service rather than a currently available offer. Winamp has not established public pricing, availability by country, or final subscription and partner terms in the announcement, so those details should not be treated as settled.
Quick Recap
What Winamp’s return means for users
- If you want the classic Windows player today, Winamp 5.9 Final Build 9999 is the release associated with improved Windows 11 support.
- If you use an older supported PC, the minimum target is Windows 7 SP1.
- If you develop extensions or fixes, the 2024 source-code opening provides a route for worldwide collaboration, while Winamp keeps final authority over the official build.
- If you are waiting for an all-in-one streaming service, the Deezer-powered player is a future plan for the first half of 2027, not a released replacement for 5.9.
