No. Nintendo lists the Ocarina of Time remake as an exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch. If you want to play this release, Nintendo Switch 2 is the supported system.
Which Nintendo system supports the remake?
Nintendo’s US product page identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the game’s system and describes it as “built from the ground up” for that console. Nintendo first announced the remake as exclusive to Switch 2 on June 12, 2026, then confirmed a scheduled release date of November 5, 2026. Nintendo’s US store listing and its exclusive-release announcement do not list the original Switch as a supported platform.
That means the original Switch cannot run this remake. The fact that some original Switch games work on Switch 2 is a separate compatibility direction: Nintendo says compatible Switch software can run on Switch 2, while noting that support or full compatibility can vary. It does not make Switch 2-exclusive games playable on the original console. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance.
What is changing in the remake?
Nintendo describes a substantial reworking of the Nintendo 64 game’s presentation and controls, including overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, and updated camera and movement controls. The announced changes may help you decide whether this particular release is worth playing, but they do not change its platform requirement. Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 launch announcement gives the release date and feature details.

What to know before choosing a system
- Already own the original Switch: You will need access to a Switch 2 to play this remake; Nintendo does not list the original model as compatible.
- Deciding whether to upgrade: The game’s exclusive status is clear, but hardware cost and retail availability are not established here. Consider an upgrade if you want this release and value its announced presentation and control changes; you do not need to upgrade if you do not plan to play it.
- Checking the game format: Nintendo’s US listing describes a digital edition and estimates a 27 GB game file. Product details can change before launch, and the listing information cited here does not establish whether a physical cartridge edition will be offered.
- Considering special-edition hardware or amiibo: Nintendo announced a Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console, Pro Controller, and carrying case scheduled for October 29, 2026. The special-edition console is not required—the regular Switch 2 is the listed platform—and retail stock was not established. Zelda-series amiibo are described as providing in-game extras, so they are optional rather than a stated requirement. Nintendo also announced Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo planned for 2027.
