Probably not by much, according to Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen—but he did not rule out a benefit or quantify what it might mean for prices. AAP reports that G7 leaders agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel over four months. Bowen welcomed the move, while saying Australia gets only a small share of its fuel from the United States and that the release might not materially change Australia’s position.
What the G7 agreed to—and what is confirmed
AAP reports that G7 leaders agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel over four months through the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA’s account of the leaders’ 2 October 2026 meeting confirms that they discussed severe pressure on diesel supplies, considered available options and asked the agency to continue its work. This reported G7 action is separate from an earlier, larger IEA collective action. On 11 March 2026, IEA member countries agreed to make 400 million barrels of emergency oil stocks available; by 2 October, about 325 million barrels of that earlier amount had been released. Bowen said Australia had been getting about 2 per cent of its fuel from the United States. He welcomed the US confirmation that it did not intend to restrict diesel supply, arguing that export restrictions would disrupt international fuel movements. His point was that keeping fuel moving can help the global market, even if the new release does not substantially alter Australia’s own supply position.

“I do welcome the actions of G7, particularly the confirmation by the United States that they are not intending to put any restrictions on diesel supply,” Bowen told reporters on Saturday.
He also said: “Australia hasn’t been getting much diesel or fuel from the United States, about two per cent but … any restrictions on exports are a blow to international fuel movements.” Both quotations are reported by AAP.

Oil markets are global, so a release can matter beyond the countries drawing on the stocks. In the IEA’s March announcement, Executive Director Fatih Birol said: “Oil markets are global so the response to major disruptions needs to be global too.” That is the case for coordinated action, not a promise that any particular release will lower Australian pump prices. Will Australian petrol and diesel prices fall?
There is no reliable price reduction to attach to the reported G7 release. Asked whether it would ease Australian bowser prices, Bowen declined to quantify the possibility. AAP reported early-October national capital-city averages of A$2.38 per litre for unleaded 91 and A$2.85 per litre for diesel, citing Petrol Pulse. These are snapshots, not a forecast and not evidence that the G7 action caused—or will cause—a change.

Even if extra supply helps ease pressure in global markets, the effect on Australian prices is not established by the available statements or figures. Bowen’s welcome for the action should not be read as a prediction that motorists will see a particular saving.

Figures Bowen gave, as reported by AAP on 3 October 2026, put Australian fuel on hand at 41 days of petrol, 32 days of diesel and 28 days of jet fuel. AAP also reported 50 supply ships headed to Australian ports and 3.6 billion litres contracted for delivery over the following four weeks. These dated figures describe the position reported at that time; they do not guarantee uninterrupted supply if conditions change.

Bowen also described a 20 per cent reduction in Australia’s minimum stock obligation requirements. That domestic obligation should not be confused with the IEA’s separate commitment for member countries to hold stocks equivalent to at least 90 days of net imports. The IEA says members can implement that commitment flexibly; the 90-day rule alone does not establish Australia’s specific domestic minimum stock requirement.
