Mumbai’s water stock is projected to last until September 5, 2027 only if the 10% water cut is extended and approved reserve storage in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa is maintained. That is a conditional planning projection reported by Hindustan Times—not a guarantee that the city will have uninterrupted supply through that date, and not confirmation that the cut has been approved.

What the September 5, 2027 projection means

Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that BMC planning data put the projected water-availability date at September 5, 2027 under two conditions: the 10% cut continues, and approved reserve storage in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa is maintained. The report said the data was presented by Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner (projects), at the civic standing committee. The projection describes a planning scenario; it should not be read as a promise about household service or as evidence that the cut’s extension was formally approved. Hindustan Times

Why other reports give different dates

The dates refer to different assumptions or descriptions of the water stock, so they are not interchangeable forecasts.

Reported date Scenario or description Source and qualification
May 17, 2027 Bangar said the stock then available would last until this date and argued that the cut needed to stay. His statement did not describe the same reserve-storage scenario as the later September projection. The Indian Express, September 30, 2026. Report
June 10, 2027 Bhatsa supply without a water cut and without retaining reserve storage. Hindustan Times, reporting BMC planning data. Report
August 2, 2027 Projected availability with approved reserve storage in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa, but without the additional condition of extending the 10% cut. Hindustan Times, reporting BMC planning data. Report
September 5, 2027 Projected availability if the 10% cut is extended and approved reserves are maintained. Hindustan Times, October 2, 2026. Report

The difference between May 17 and the later dates is not necessarily a contradiction: the Indian Express quotation refers to the stock Bangar said was then available, while the Hindustan Times report gives dates for specified planning scenarios. The published material does not provide a complete model methodology that would let readers independently reconcile every assumption.

What the reported storage figures show

Hindustan Times reported that Bhatsa’s useful storage was 717,037 million litres and that 704,965 million litres were available as of September 30, 2026. It also described current BMC city supply as around 4,100 million litres per day (MLD). Those are figures reported by the newspaper for the stated date and context, not a conversion of reservoir levels into a guaranteed number of days of household supply. Hindustan Times

BMC’s 2026 Civic Diary gives total Mumbai water supply as 4,000 MLD and lists these source yields:

A reservoir percentage is a snapshot, not a duration

Two reports provide different dated comparisons. Hindustan Times said Maharashtra irrigation reservoirs were at 75.25% on September 30, 2026, compared with 88.82% at the comparable point a year earlier. The Indian Express reported Mumbai’s seven lakes at 96.64% on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, versus 97.57% a year earlier and 99.09% two years earlier. These percentages describe storage on particular dates; neither, on its own, establishes how long supply will last under a given demand, cut or reserve policy. Hindustan Times; The Indian Express

How Mumbai’s water system fits into the projection

BMC identifies seven sources: Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, Lower Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa and Middle Vaitarna. Its 2025 Year Book says raw water from these impounded sources is conveyed through transmission mains and tunnels to treatment facilities. The described treatment includes coagulation, flocculation, settling, rapid sand filtration and post-chlorination; BMC says treated water quality is maintained in accordance with IS 10500:2012 drinking-water specifications. This system context explains how reservoir water reaches treatment, but reservoir stock is not a direct measure of tap pressure or the likelihood of a local service interruption. BMC 2025 Year Book

Is the 10% water cut approved to continue?

The September 5 projection is conditional on extending the cut, but the cited reporting does not establish a formal approval record for an extension. The Indian Express quoted Bangar saying the cut needed to stay, citing the risk that hotter conditions and evaporation could worsen the shortage. That is an official’s stated rationale, not confirmation of a final decision. Check for a subsequent BMC announcement before treating the extension as settled. The Indian Express report

Keep Mumbai’s projection separate from wider regional shortages

Hindustan Times also reported that state irrigation supply would be regulated to prioritize drinking water through August 31, 2027, and quoted irrigation secretary Prakash Misal warning of shortfalls in Kalyan-Dombivli, Palghar, Vasai-Virar and other areas. Those are wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region conditions; they should not be conflated with the BMC projection for water supply to Mumbai city. Hindustan Times
