Lanterns had not been officially renewed for a second season as of October 2, 2026. A writers’ room is reportedly developing possible stories, but that is creative preparation—not an HBO or DC Studios order. James Gunn’s description of the October 4 episode as a “Season finale” leaves room for more, but does not confirm it.
Has Lanterns been renewed for season 2?
No. The latest reported update, from TV Insider on October 2, 2026, said HBO and DC Studios had not officially renewed the series. That is the clearest answer to whether season 2 is confirmed: it is not.
HBO announced Lanterns as an eight-episode drama based on DC’s Green Lantern. HBO chief Casey Bloys described it as an original detective story. The series’ initial order establishes what the first season is; it does not guarantee another one.
What the writers’ room report does—and does not—mean
There is evidence of creative work on possible future episodes. TV Insider reported that a season-two writers’ room had reportedly been assembled, naming Chris Mundy, Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly as expected participants. Treat the lineup as reported, not as an official studio announcement.

Co-creator Damon Lindelof also said Chris Mundy had started a room to explore what stories Lanterns might tell next. Mundy described the work as laying out a season before presenting it to decision-makers. Those comments support the existence of planning; they do not establish that HBO or DC Studios approved production.

Does the “season finale” wording confirm more episodes?
No. James Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO, called the October 4 installment a “Season finale, correct,” according to GamesRadar’s September 29 report of his Threads exchange. “Season finale” distinguishes the episode from a series finale, but it is not a renewal announcement. It leaves the possibility of another season open without promising one.

Do viewing figures make season 2 more likely?
The reviewed coverage uses broad descriptions such as “viewership success” and audience growth, but does not provide a precise, attributable audience figure with a measurement period and geography. Nor did it identify a studio representative explicitly connecting the show’s audience performance to a season-two decision. Without that evidence, claims that ratings have secured a renewal—or caused one—go beyond what has been established.

The key distinction is whether HBO or DC Studios makes a formal announcement. A writers’ room can be an encouraging sign of interest, but only an official renewal or series order would settle the question. HBO chief Casey Bloys has cautioned against treating development reporting as a greenlight; TechRadar’s September 16, 2026, account of his comments said The People v Gorilla Grodd was the only DC Studios TV show then in active development. That is context for reading development news carefully, not a separate confirmation of Lanterns’ status.
