Hardwiring a battery-powered Ring doorbell to a compatible low-voltage transformer provides a trickle charge; it does not turn the doorbell into a full-time mains-powered device. The internal battery remains its primary power source, so wiring can reduce how often you need to charge it manually, but Ring does not promise a specific battery-life extension.
What trickle charging means for a Ring doorbell
Ring says that connecting a battery-powered doorbell to existing wiring, a transformer, or a Plug-In Adapter supplies a trickle charge to the battery. The battery still primarily powers the device. How much longer a charge lasts depends on the particular doorbell and its use conditions; Ring’s cited support guidance does not give a guaranteed number of extra days or months.

Check transformer compatibility before wiring
Ring’s UK support guidance gives a general range for connecting to an existing doorbell system: 8–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, and 5–40 VA. This is general guidance, not a guarantee that every transformer in that range will work with every Ring model. Check the requirements for your exact doorbell and installation before choosing a transformer; voltage alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Ring warns against halogen and garden-lighting transformers and against DC supplies that are not made or certified by Ring. Do not adapt a lighting circuit or improvise a power supply. An incompatible source can damage the device and create an electric-shock risk.
Model-specific wiring details matter
Ring says most battery-powered doorbells do not need wiring changes when connected directly to a transformer. Its instructions identify the Video Doorbell 2 and Video Doorbell (1st Gen) as exceptions that require a wirewound resistor for direct transformer wiring. Confirm the current instructions for your model rather than applying that resistor requirement to other devices.

Some installations also involve bypassing an in-home chime. Ring’s guidance describes removing the two wires from the chime terminals and joining them, but household wiring arrangements vary. Follow the official instructions for the exact model and setup, or use a qualified electrician.

Set the chime option to match the installation
In Ring’s app, the In-Home Chime setting should reflect what is actually connected. Select Mechanical or Digital for a compatible connected chime. Select No chime or None when wiring directly to a transformer, bypassing the indoor chime, or using a Plug-In Adapter. Ring warns that the wrong chime setting can damage the device. Safety comes before installation
Ring instructs installers to disconnect power to the installation area at the circuit breaker or fuse box before beginning. Wiring can expose you to electric shock, and local laws or building codes may require a permit or a qualified electrician. If you are unsure which circuit or wiring configuration you have, stop and consult an electrician rather than working on live wiring. Ring’s hardwiring instructions include its safety guidance.
