There is no official forecast of widespread snow across the UK this winter. As of 8 October 2026, the Met Office expects El Niño to increase the odds of wetter, stormier and generally milder conditions in late autumn and early winter. Cold spells could become more likely later if the stratospheric polar vortex weakens and the weather pattern becomes blocked, but that is a possibility—not a prediction of snow on a particular date or in a particular place.
What the UK winter outlook says about snow
The Met Office’s 5 October 2026 review rejects claims that the UK is about to be hit by widespread snow linked to the polar vortex. It describes shifts in probability, not guarantees. The seasonal outlook material available by 8 October does not give a location-specific snowfall probability for winter 2026–27.
Instead, the broad early-winter signal leans toward unsettled weather. The Met Office’s 11 September discussion describes an increased likelihood of wetter-than-average conditions during autumn and points to wet, windy and potentially stormy conditions later in autumn into early winter. The UK Government’s September advice likewise identifies a slightly increased chance of stronger westerlies and low-pressure patterns associated with storminess and heavy-rain and flood risk from October to December 2026.
For early 2027, the Government advice notes a slightly increased risk of easterlies, northerlies and cold snaps. That leaves room for a colder spell later in the season, but does not establish that one will happen or bring snow to any specific UK region.

Why El Niño does not settle the UK snow question
El Niño is a warming of ocean-surface waters in the tropical Pacific that influences atmospheric circulation around the world. Its effects on the UK are indirect: the signal can alter the odds of certain weather patterns, but it does not dictate the weather on a particular day. Other climate drivers, including variability in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, and ordinary atmospheric variability also affect UK conditions.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reported a strengthening El Niño in its diagnostic current during October 2026. It gave the probability of a historic event—defined by NOAA as a three-month RONI value of at least +2.5°C—as 54% for September–November 2026, 83% for October–December 2026, and 70% for November 2026–January 2027. NOAA also said a strong-to-very-strong event was likely through January–March 2027, with the chance remaining above 83%. These figures concern El Niño’s strength, not the chance of snow in Britain.

In an 21 August 2026 forecast, the Met Office said its GloSea Niño 3.4 forecasts showed values above 3°C in coming months. That was a model forecast, not a measurement of the event’s eventual peak. The UK Government’s science advice notes that forecasts of El Niño’s peak made six months ahead have an approximate mean error of 0.6°C; it says the error halves for forecasts made three months ahead. Uncertainty in the event’s strength is one reason not to treat its UK weather effects as fixed.
How the polar vortex could raise the chance of cold
The polar vortex is a circulation of winds high in the stratosphere above the Arctic during winter. It can strengthen or weaken. According to the Met Office, a prolonged weakening typically favours a negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and colder UK weather.

The NAO describes broad pressure patterns over the North Atlantic. A negative phase weakens the usual westerly flow and raises the chance of winds reaching the UK from the east or north-east. In winter, those winds can bring cold air and increase the chance of snow. A sudden stratospheric warming can be associated with blocking over the North Atlantic and Scandinavia, colder and drier spells in northern Europe, and sometimes cold easterly winds and snow.
This is a conditional pathway, not a chain of guaranteed events: a weakening vortex does not by itself confirm a sudden stratospheric warming, a particular NAO pattern, or snowfall in the UK. El Niño and other climate drivers can also strengthen or weaken the patterns. Even in a season with a broad NAO tendency, individual pressure systems and storms can differ substantially.

What a seasonal outlook can—and cannot—tell you
A seasonal outlook estimates broad trends and changing probabilities over weeks or months. It cannot reliably name the date of a cold spell, say which UK town or region will get snow, or count the season’s snow days. The Met Office cautions that seasonal forecasts cannot determine exactly when or where individual events will happen.

Bottom line for winter 2026–27
The official outlook available on 8 October 2026 points to a higher chance of unsettled, wetter and generally milder weather in late autumn and early winter, with cold spells remaining possible later if the polar-vortex and wider circulation patterns evolve in that direction. It does not forecast widespread UK snow, and El Niño’s strength should not be mistaken for a prediction of severe British winter weather.
