AMD does not say that a motherboard’s 105W setting is automatically covered—or automatically excluded—by warranty. AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X at 65W default TDP, and its warranty excludes defects AMD determines were caused by operating or modifying a processor outside AMD specifications or by overclocking. The sources reviewed do not classify a particular 105W BIOS option as within or outside those specifications, so coverage depends on AMD’s determination and the circumstances of a failure.

What AMD’s warranty says about 105W operation

AMD’s limited warranty is framed around the cause of a defect or non-conformance. It says the warranty does not apply if AMD determines the problem was caused by improper use, operation or modification outside AMD specifications, or by overclocking the product. AMD also says overclocking can fall outside coverage even when enabled through AMD hardware or software. AMD’s limited warranty and its Ryzen 9000 Series warranty notice do not identify a motherboard’s 105W setting or say whether it is within AMD specifications.

That leaves two unsupported blanket claims to avoid: that selecting 105W always voids coverage, and that a 105W BIOS mode is guaranteed warranty-safe. AMD’s published terms make the cause of the failure and whether the processor was operating within specifications material; the listed 65W default TDP alone does not settle the status of a specific BIOS option.

65W TDP, boost clock, and a 105W BIOS setting are different things

AMD lists both processors with a default TDP of 65W. TDP is not the same specification as maximum boost clock, nor does it by itself establish how a particular motherboard implements a power-related BIOS setting. AMD describes boost clock as a maximum associated with bursty workloads, with attainable and sustainable frequencies varying by thermal conditions, workload, and other factors. AMD’s June 2, 2024 announcement gives these specifications:

Ryzen 5 9600X 6 / 12 3.9GHz Up to 5.4GHz 65W

Those figures do not tell you whether a named motherboard’s 105W setting is an AMD-approved mode. To assess that setting, identify the motherboard model, BIOS version, and the exact option or profile—not just the displayed wattage—and ask AMD or the seller/system builder whether that configuration is within the applicable specifications.

What to do before enabling the setting

  1. Record the exact configuration. Note the motherboard model, BIOS version, exact setting name, and any related tuning options that are enabled. A 105W label by itself does not establish the setting’s warranty status.
  2. Check the applicable documentation. Compare the board’s description with AMD’s published processor specifications and warranty terms. Do not treat the processor’s 65W default TDP as proof that every higher BIOS power option is out of specification.
  3. Ask the right support channel about that configuration. Give AMD or the applicable seller/system builder the precise setting and ask whether it is within AMD specifications for your CPU and board. Keep the response with your purchase and configuration records.
  4. Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable. If preserving the clearest path to warranty coverage matters more than using the 105W option, leave that option disabled unless the responsible support channel confirms the specific configuration is within specifications.

Where to request warranty service

For a boxed processor, AMD’s warranty guidance says to contact the company that sold it first. AMD’s service information distinguishes sealed retail-box processors from other purchases: a CPU preinstalled in a system is handled by the system builder, while an OEM processor bought separately outside sealed retail packaging is serviced by the point of purchase. See AMD’s processor warranty-service guidance for the applicable route.

If a processor fails after you have used a 105W setting, report the configuration accurately. AMD’s warranty language does not promise coverage based solely on the processor model or the BIOS label; it makes its determination in light of the cause and whether operation was outside specifications or involved overclocking.

Cooler note for the Ryzen 5 9600X

Warranty status aside, AMD’s US store listing says the Ryzen 5 9600X does not include a thermal solution and recommends a premium air cooler for optimal performance. Check the listing and the cooler’s compatibility with your system before buying; the cooler recommendation does not classify a 105W BIOS setting for warranty purposes.
