Lisa Su was expected in Seoul on October 7, 2026, but reports available that day did not confirm that she had met Samsung’s leadership or that the companies had announced a new deal. The established development is a March 18 memorandum of understanding (MOU): AMD and Samsung agreed to align on HBM4 for AMD’s MI455X accelerator, collaborate on memory for EPYC processors and Helios systems, and discuss possible foundry services.

What is confirmed about Su’s South Korea visit?

Aju Press reported on October 6 that AMD CEO Lisa Su was due in South Korea that week for AMD Gamer Day in Seoul on Wednesday, October 7, with a media Q&A scheduled. The report said meetings with Korean AI-chip companies and government officials were expected. Aju Press’s visit report did not establish that a meeting with Samsung had taken place.

Seoul Economic Daily had reported on September 30 that Samsung and other Korean firms were among the companies drawing attention as possible meeting partners, while the companies had not confirmed specific meeting schedules. As of October 7, the reports cited here do not confirm a meeting between Su and Samsung’s chip leadership or a new agreement during the visit. Seoul Economic Daily’s report is AI-translated from Korean and cautions that translated quotations may not preserve the exact original wording.

What did AMD and Samsung already agree to?

On March 18, 2026, AMD and Samsung announced an MOU at Samsung’s Pyeongtaek complex. It describes three cooperation tracks, but it is not evidence that a binding supply contract or manufacturing award was made.

  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Cooperation track What the announcement says Status and significance
HBM4 for MI455X Alignment on primary HBM4 supply for AMD’s next-generation MI455X accelerator. Supply alignment is part of the MOU; the announcement does not establish a separate binding supply contract.
Memory for EPYC and Helios Memory solutions for sixth-generation EPYC processors, codenamed “Venice,” and DDR5 for Helios systems. A stated collaboration area, not a published allocation or delivery schedule.
Possible foundry services The companies said they would discuss potential Samsung foundry services for future AMD products. Further discussion only; no foundry manufacturing award is established.

Samsung’s announcement also places MI455X within AMD’s Helios rack-scale architecture. AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su said, “Powering the next generation of AI infrastructure requires deep collaboration across the industry.”

Why is memory supply important to AI accelerators?

High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is a specialized memory used alongside AI accelerators. Its supply matters because accelerator production depends not only on the compute chip but also on access to essential components. AMD’s August 4, 2026 second-quarter results release explicitly lists the availability of essential components, including memory supply, among factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from expectations. That disclosure establishes a business risk; it does not reveal AMD’s current inventory, allocations or supply forecast. AMD’s second-quarter results release provides the company’s wording.

Samsung described its HBM4 as using 1c-class DRAM and a 4nm logic base die, with speeds of up to 13 Gbps and maximum bandwidth of 3.3 TB/s. Those are Samsung’s vendor-published specifications, not independent comparative test results. The figures describe the product Samsung announced, not a confirmed performance result for an AMD system.

How long could the memory crunch last?

Seoul Economic Daily attributed to TrendForce a forecast that the memory shortage could continue through 2027, amid expanding AI-server investment and competition for capacity between HBM and conventional DRAM. This is a forecast reported secondhand, not a guarantee that a shortage will persist for that long. The cited report does not provide TrendForce’s underlying methodology or numerical supply-demand estimates, so the duration and scale of any shortage remain uncertain.

What the October developments would—and would not—mean

A confirmed meeting or announcement could signal further engagement, but it would not by itself establish a supply commitment or foundry award. The March MOU already shows cooperation on HBM4, EPYC and Helios memory, alongside discussions of possible foundry services. Any claim that October produced a new contract, expanded allocation, packaging agreement or manufacturing decision requires a company announcement or reporting that specifically confirms it.

For now, the grounded distinction is between the documented March MOU and October developments that were expected but not confirmed in the reporting available on October 7. AMD’s own disclosure shows why component availability matters to its business, while the cited shortage timeline remains a TrendForce forecast relayed by a news outlet.
