Yes, but not in a simple one-for-one way. AI data centers are absorbing more DRAM and NAND flash, and manufacturers are directing scarce capacity toward higher-value server memory, high-bandwidth memory and enterprise storage. That supply pressure can raise the cost of consumer PC RAM and client SSDs, yet retail prices also depend on inventories, buyer demand, product specifications and local competition.

The latest market outlook, published by TrendForce on September 30, 2026, forecasts conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20%. Those are industry contract-price forecasts between suppliers and large buyers—not a promise that every RAM kit or consumer SSD will rise by the same percentage.

What AI demand is doing to the memory supply chain

AI workloads require several kinds of memory and storage. Training and inference systems use high-bandwidth memory (HBM) alongside server DRAM, while large AI services also need enterprise SSDs to store models, datasets, checkpoints and cached results. The relevant components are made in overlapping manufacturing ecosystems, so a rapid increase in data-center orders can affect how suppliers allocate wafer capacity, packaging resources and finished inventory.

DRAM is volatile working memory: it provides the fast, low-latency space used by processors in servers and client PCs. NAND flash is non-volatile storage: it retains data when power is removed and is used in enterprise and client SSDs, phones, removable storage and other devices. A shortage or price increase in one category should not automatically be applied to the other.

Micron’s 2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q describes the mechanism directly, saying that “AI-driven memory and storage growth is outpacing industry supply.” The filing reports constrained supply and increased pricing across the company’s DRAM and NAND portfolio. That is company-reported evidence rather than an independently measured retail index, but it explains why AI expansion is a genuine supply-side influence.

Samsung’s FY2025 results similarly described limited supply and higher prices while emphasizing HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSD products, with plans to expand AI-related offerings in 2026. SK hynix reported strong AI-infrastructure demand and quarter-over-quarter increases in both DRAM and NAND flash prices in its second-quarter 2026 results. These statements corroborate pressure at the supplier level; they do not establish the exact price of a particular consumer product in a particular country.

The latest forecasts: contract markets, not checkout prices

TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook is the most recent forecast cited here. Its figures describe negotiated contract prices for memory components, usually involving manufacturers, module makers, PC manufacturers and other large buyers.

Market measure Forecast period Expected change What the figure means
Conventional DRAM contract price 4Q26, quarter over quarter 10–15% increase Supplier-to-buyer component contracts; not a guaranteed retail change for a RAM kit
NAND Flash contract price 4Q26, quarter over quarter 15–20% increase Underlying flash contracts; not a guaranteed change for a finished client SSD
Conventional DRAM contract price 3Q26, quarter over quarter 13–18% increase Earlier TrendForce forecast, included as context rather than a current retail reading
NAND Flash contract price 3Q26, quarter over quarter 10–15% increase Earlier TrendForce forecast, included as context rather than a current retail reading

A contract increase can reach retail through several steps. A module assembler or SSD maker may pay more for memory, then decide how much of that cost to pass to distributors and stores. Existing inventory may have been purchased at an older price, retailers may discount to clear stock, and competition may prevent a full pass-through. Exchange rates, taxes and promotions can move a local shelf price independently of the component market.

Why consumer RAM is exposed

Consumer PC memory is not the same product as HBM or server DRAM, but it competes for manufacturing attention and, in some cases, advanced-process capacity. TrendForce says suppliers are prioritizing advanced capacity for high-performance server products. It also warns that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 if more capacity is shifted toward server applications.

For 2026, TrendForce says agreed supply volumes to PC original-equipment manufacturers and module makers were being fulfilled. That means a buyer should not infer that ordinary desktop or laptop RAM will suddenly disappear. The risk is tighter availability and less favorable pricing as suppliers reserve more capacity for products with stronger data-center margins.

PC manufacturers are continuing to procure memory because they expect supply to remain tight in 2027. If that expectation persists, contract pressure can feed into new-system bills of materials and eventually into upgrade-kit pricing. The timing will differ by generation, capacity and form factor: a common DDR5 desktop kit can behave differently from an older laptop module or a specialized high-capacity configuration.

What this means for a RAM upgrade

  • Check whether the computer requires DDR4, DDR5 or another generation; generations are not interchangeable.
  • Verify the form factor, such as desktop UDIMM or laptop SO-DIMM, and the motherboard’s supported capacity and speed.
  • Compare complete-kit prices locally rather than assuming the 10–15% 4Q26 DRAM contract forecast applies directly to the product in your cart.
  • If the upgrade is necessary, weigh the cost of waiting against the possibility that tighter 2027 supply will reduce discounts. The forecast is not a guarantee in either direction.

Why SSD pricing can diverge from enterprise storage

NAND Flash is the underlying memory in both enterprise and client SSDs, but the two markets currently have very different demand patterns. TrendForce describes enterprise SSD demand as markedly stronger because cloud providers are expanding infrastructure for AI inference. Enterprise SSD bit demand is forecast to grow by more than 80% year over year in 2026, and most incremental supply is already committed. That figure describes enterprise demand, not consumer SSD sales or consumer prices.

Client SSD procurement is more restrained. PC brands can draw on finished-device and channel inventories, and some are reducing mainstream SSD capacities to lower system costs. With weaker buying requirements and more stock in the channel, suppliers can take a more flexible pricing stance for client drives even while NAND contract prices rise.

Characteristic Client SSD Enterprise SSD
Primary buyers PC brands, system builders and individual upgraders Cloud providers and data-center operators
Demand driver in the 2026 outlook Consumer and PC demand constrained by inventory and affordability AI inference infrastructure expansion
Inventory and procurement Finished-device and channel inventory can cover part of requirements; mainstream capacities may be reduced Most incremental supply committed as demand expands
Expected pricing behavior Can lag or soften the underlying NAND increase because sellers compete for limited client orders Faster price growth is expected as supply follows strong AI-related demand

This is why an enterprise SSD headline should not be used as a direct prediction for a consumer 1TB or 2TB drive. Both products use NAND, but their qualification requirements, controllers, endurance ratings, capacities, purchasing contracts and inventory cycles differ.

Affordability and inventory can limit retail pass-through

TrendForce’s earlier July 3, 2026 outlook noted that consumers were reaching affordability limits. It also described client SSD buyers resisting another round of increases because they still held inventory. Those conditions create a ceiling for what many retailers and PC makers can charge.

When a component becomes more expensive but demand is weak, a seller has choices: absorb part of the increase, reduce capacity, delay a purchase, use an older component or discount another part of the system. A PC maker might ship a lower-capacity SSD to keep a model’s advertised price stable. A retailer might sell through older stock before repricing new arrivals. These responses can make retail movements uneven and delayed.

Affordability does not cancel supply pressure. It changes the path from contract pricing to the consumer. A tight component market can coexist with temporary discounts on a particular drive or memory kit if that seller has excess inventory.

How to decide whether to buy RAM or an SSD

Buy now when the upgrade solves an immediate problem

If a computer is running out of memory, paging heavily, or failing to meet a work or gaming requirement, the practical benefit of a compatible upgrade may outweigh the uncertainty of a future price move. Likewise, an SSD replacement can be urgent if the existing drive is failing or lacks the required capacity. In those cases, use the market outlook as background, not as a reason to delay a needed repair.

Wait when the purchase is optional and your local market is well stocked

For a nonessential capacity increase, waiting can make sense if comparable products are widely available and current prices are above your budget. Client SSD pricing is especially capable of diverging from enterprise trends because of channel inventory and restrained PC procurement. No cited source establishes that waiting will produce a lower retail price, however.

Compare like for like

  1. Record the exact requirement: memory generation and form factor, or SSD interface, physical size and capacity.
  2. Compare several current local prices for products with the same specifications and warranty terms.
  3. Check whether a discount reflects older inventory, a temporary promotion or a genuinely lower everyday price.
  4. For an SSD, confirm that the computer supports the intended interface, such as the relevant PCIe/NVMe or SATA standard, and that the drive fits the available bay or slot.
  5. For RAM, confirm the system’s maximum capacity, supported speed and whether matched modules are required for the intended configuration.
  6. Buy based on the device’s needs and the actual price you can obtain, not by multiplying a contract forecast by the advertised retail price.

What could happen next

Persistent AI expansion

If cloud providers continue building AI inference capacity and suppliers keep reallocating advanced capacity to server products, upward pressure on DRAM and NAND contracts is likely to persist. Consumer RAM could feel this through tighter PC supply in 2027, while enterprise SSDs would remain the most directly exposed storage segment.

Balanced or weaker consumer demand

If consumers and PC makers remain price-sensitive, client SSD sellers may continue using inventory and discounts to protect volume. Retail RAM may also move less than contract quotations if module makers and retailers absorb part of the increase.

Supply expansion or a demand slowdown

Additional manufacturing capacity, a pause in AI infrastructure spending or a broader PC downturn could ease component markets. The cited forecasts do not quantify those scenarios, so they cannot be used to assign a probability or a date to a reversal.

What the evidence does not establish

  • It does not provide a universal consumer retail price forecast by country.
  • It does not show the exact share of a RAM or SSD price change caused by AI demand.
  • It does not prove that every DDR5 kit, laptop module or client SSD will rise by the forecast contract percentage.
  • It does not show that buying immediately will save money compared with waiting.
  • It does not justify applying enterprise SSD demand or pricing directly to consumer drives.

The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: AI demand is tightening the memory supply chain and is likely to keep upward pressure on consumer RAM and storage costs while capacity remains constrained. The near-term retail effect will vary by segment. Conventional DRAM and NAND contract forecasts point higher for 4Q26, but client SSD inventories and affordability can delay or reduce pass-through, while enterprise SSDs are experiencing much stronger AI-linked demand.
