Possibly—but not because AI is directly taking memory chips out of phones. AI data centers are driving demand for server memory, and suppliers are prioritizing those products. That leaves mobile DRAM tighter and more expensive, adding pressure to low-cost phone production. The outlook points to a risk of fewer cheap models, altered memory configurations, or higher prices—not proof that every budget phone will become more expensive or disappear.
How AI data-center demand can affect budget phones
AI servers rely on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM. TrendForce says suppliers continued prioritizing server products in its fourth-quarter 2026 outlook, leaving mobile DRAM allocations tight. The resulting competition for manufacturing capacity is one factor behind pressure on phone memory supply; it is not the only cause of phone costs or availability. TrendForce’s 4Q26 outlook describes rising costs and depleted low-cost inventories weighing on smartphone production.
Phone makers still make their own procurement and product decisions. Component prices, contract terms, existing inventory, consumer demand, and each brand’s product mix all affect whether supply pressure becomes a higher retail price, a changed specification, or a decision not to offer a particular model.
Why the cheapest phones face more pressure
Memory is a component cost, and low-price phones generally leave manufacturers less room to absorb cost increases without affecting margins. TrendForce’s mobile-memory briefing says high mobile-memory costs are difficult for brands to absorb and describes low-end memory configurations being reshaped. It also notes that manufacturers can optimize memory requirements through software and system architecture. TrendForce’s mobile DRAM briefing discusses these adjustments.

That pressure could show up as a lower memory capacity, a different mix of models, fewer low-cost options, or a price change. The sources do not establish which outcome will apply to a specific phone or market. Premium models, budget models, and different storage configurations can face different trade-offs.
What the forecasts say about memory costs
These figures describe memory components and supply-chain forecasts, not the retail price increase for a smartphone:
| Forecast or estimate | What it means |
|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM contract prices: 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26; NAND Flash: 15–20% in 4Q26 | TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast for component contract prices. Source |
| DRAM prices up 125% and NAND flash prices up 234% in 2026 | Gartner’s 2026 estimates for memory prices; Gartner said meaningful pricing relief was not expected until late 2027. These are not phone-price forecasts. Source |
| DRAM sufficiency ratio estimated at approximately -1% to -2% in 2026 | TrendForce’s July 2026 estimate of a supply-demand gap, which it expected to widen further in 2027. Source |
The wider server and storage market adds context, but it is not a direct measure of phone supply. TrendForce reported 17% year-over-year growth in global server shipments in 2026 and projected enterprise SSD bit demand to grow by more than 80% year over year in 2026. Those figures illustrate infrastructure demand; neither is a smartphone shipment or mobile-memory measure. TrendForce’s July outlook covers server shipments, while its September outlook covers enterprise SSD demand.

DRAM and phone storage are not the same market
Mobile DRAM, typically LPDDR, supports active tasks such as running apps. NAND flash, commonly used in phone storage, holds persistent files and applications. Their supply outlooks can differ: TrendForce expected DRAM to remain tight into 2027, while NAND supply could loosen in the second half of 2027 as new capacity comes online. A change in NAND availability does not automatically resolve mobile DRAM pressure, or vice versa. TrendForce’s July 2026 outlook discusses the separate trajectories.

Supply pressure does not mean phones have stopped being made
Market-wide allocation pressure can coexist with ongoing product supply. Micron reported a high-volume ramp of 16Gb LPDDR5X at a leading smartphone OEM and said it was sampling a 24Gb LPDDR5X product to multiple phone customers. This company disclosure shows that mobile-memory products continue to move through the supply chain; it does not establish that supply is ample across the market or that particular budget phones are in stock. Micron’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 results report those product updates.

For buyers, the practical implication is uncertainty around future budget-phone selection and specifications, rather than a universal price increase that can be calculated from memory forecasts. A forecast for a component’s contract price does not translate one-for-one into a phone’s store price. Retail prices also depend on a maker’s contracts, inventory, other component costs, demand, and pricing choices.
