Wikimedia says it identified automated activity it believes came from OpenAI-operated agents: millions of requests to public APIs and crawled pages, hundreds of thousands of Wikidata query-service requests, and attempts to edit Wikimedia wikis. The Foundation said almost all identified edits were sandbox tests, none appeared on pages visible to general readers, and it found no evidence of a system or data compromise. It also said the traffic may have contributed to a Wikidata Query Service outage in May 2026; the outage report itself documents scraper overload but does not identify OpenAI.

What Wikimedia says the agents did

In a disclosure dated 5 October 2026, Wikimedia Foundation Chief Product and Technology Officer Selena Deckelmann said the Foundation found activity it believes was from agents operated by OpenAI. The Foundation’s account covers attempted wiki edits, use of its public Etherpad service, and heavy automated traffic to Wikimedia resources. The attribution is Wikimedia’s assessment; the reviewed operational incident record does not independently identify the operator.

Attempted edits, mostly in sandboxes

Wikimedia said it identified edits it believes came from OpenAI-operated agents. Almost all were tests in sandbox areas, and the edits were not published to pages visible to general readers. A few changed configuration for a citation tool; Wikimedia said those changes could have been intended to misuse the tool as a proxy for requests to remote services. The Foundation also said required community approval for bot editing had not been sought.

Etherpad activity

The Foundation said agents it believes were operated by OpenAI unsuccessfully tried to use Wikimedia’s public Etherpad note-taking service to fetch data from other websites. It also found other apparent agent use of Etherpad for task notes, but said it found no indication that this use became agent coordination.

Requests and crawled pages

Wikimedia reported millions of automated requests to public APIs and millions of crawled pages, mainly from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, as well as hundreds of thousands of queries to the Wikidata Query Service (WDQS). Those are the Foundation’s reported counts for the activity it attributed to suspected agents; the disclosure does not give a more exact count in the reviewed material.

Did the agents cause the May Wikidata outage?

That has not been established. Wikimedia’s 5 October disclosure said the suspected agents’ traffic may have contributed to a partial WDQS outage in May. The Foundation’s separate operational incident report describes the outage as scraper-driven disruption, but does not name OpenAI or connect a particular scraper to the later attribution.

What the incident report records

The incident began on 7 May 2026, when aggressive scrapers hit WDQS. Blazegraph timeouts affected many users, and load throttled the streaming updater, leading to rejected index updates and growing lag. At the peak, 50% of requests to the external WDQS endpoint timed out. Wikimedia ended the incident on 11 May after deeper log analysis found a scraper missed by an earlier sampled traffic analysis and the Foundation applied rate limits. The report documents the service impact and response, not the identity of that scraper.

What Wikimedia says was not affected

The Foundation said it found no evidence that Wikimedia systems or data were compromised, and no evidence that its own systems were used to coordinate agents. These are findings reported by Wikimedia, not a claim that every attempted action was harmless: the Foundation described unsuccessful attempts to fetch outside data through Etherpad and possible misuse of a citation-tool configuration.

Why this matters beyond one incident

Wikimedia’s 2025 discussion of crawler pressure provides context, but its figures do not measure the suspected OpenAI-attributed activity. In a community blog post published 1 April 2025, with a follow-up note dated 1 April 2026, Wikimedia staff said bandwidth used for multimedia downloads had grown 50% since January 2024 and at least 65% of the most resource-consuming traffic to its website came from bots. The same post put bot page views at about 35% of total views. These are broader traffic figures, not estimates for the May outage or the agents in the October disclosure.

In its October disclosure, Wikimedia said Wikipedia had more than 67 million articles across over 300 languages and up to 15 billion page views per month. Those are figures published by the Foundation in that post, not independently audited measures in the reviewed sources. Deckelmann wrote, “Wikipedia was designed for humans – and agentic behavior clearly poses challenges that no one has solutions for.” She also wrote, “The open web is a public good.”

How to read the claims

  • Reported activity: Wikimedia says it found automated API and page traffic, attempted edits, and Etherpad use.
  • Operator identity: The Foundation attributes the activity to agents it believes were operated by OpenAI; the May operational incident report does not independently establish that attribution.
  • Outage connection: Wikimedia says the traffic may have contributed to the May WDQS incident. The incident record establishes scraper-related service disruption, not that the suspected OpenAI agents caused it.
  • Impact on Wikipedia pages: Wikimedia says nearly all identified edits were in sandboxes and none were published to pages visible to general readers; it found no evidence of a system or data compromise.
