In the Japan-travel context, Wi-Fi PASSPORT usually refers to SoftBank’s FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT: a free service for eligible visitors and some domestic mobile users to connect at participating SoftBank Wi-Fi hotspots. It is not a worldwide pass or a guarantee of Wi-Fi throughout Japan.
What is SoftBank FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT?
FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT gives eligible users access to participating SoftBank Wi-Fi spots. SoftBank describes it for visitors to Japan using overseas mobile operators and for certain users of domestic carriers. Other providers also use “Passport” in service names, so the name alone does not identify one universal Wi-Fi service.
SoftBank says the service is free and has no time limit at eligible access points. For visitors, credentials are valid for 14 days, with up to five devices permitted per day. These are the limits stated in SoftBank’s FAQ; they do not mean every hotspot is available everywhere or at all times.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Only some SoftBank Wi-Fi spots participate. SoftBank cautions that even a location displaying a service sticker may not be usable, so treat access as hotspot-dependent rather than blanket coverage across Japan. Check for the network where you are and do not rely on the service as your only connection for travel-critical tasks. See SoftBank’s business Wi-Fi service information.

How do visitors connect?
The network names listed for the service are .FREE_Wi-Fi_PASSPORT and .FREE_Wi-Fi_PASSPORT_J. SoftBank’s English guide, dated December 11, 2023, describes registration by phone call. The live screen and process may differ, so follow the prompts shown on the access point.
- On a Wi-Fi-capable device, select
.FREE_Wi-Fi_PASSPORTor.FREE_Wi-Fi_PASSPORT_J. - Accept the displayed terms and choose phone registration if that option is offered.
- Call the number displayed on screen to receive a password.
- Log in using your phone number and the password.
Phone registration requires roaming, and the call may incur charges under your mobile contract. SoftBank also says some carriers may not support this registration method. The process requires a suitable browser and a device with Wi-Fi capability. See the SoftBank user guide and service information.

Is it the right connection option for your trip?
FREE Wi-Fi PASSPORT is useful when you are near a participating hotspot and meet the registration requirements. It does not provide cellular data away from those spots. SoftBank separately references a data-only Prepaid SIM for Travel, but its available service information does not establish current prices, data allowances, or coverage for a direct comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose hotspot Wi-Fi when you can use a participating location and the registration method works for your carrier.
- Consider a cellular-data option if you need internet access while moving between hotspots; check its current coverage, data allowance, and total cost before choosing.
- Include possible roaming or call charges in the cost of phone registration, even though the Wi-Fi service itself is free.
SoftBank’s separate Prepaid SIM for Travel information confirms it as a visitor option, but does not provide enough detail here to establish whether it is more suitable for a particular itinerary.
