A Wi-Fi 6E router is a Wi-Fi 6 router that can also transmit on the 6 GHz Wi-Fi band. To use that band, your phone, laptop, or other client must support 6 GHz Wi-Fi too, and local spectrum rules must permit its operation. The label describes a capability—not a promise that every connected device will use 6 GHz or that your home will get faster measured speeds.

What does Wi-Fi 6E mean?

Wi-Fi 6 is a Wi-Fi generation; the “E” in Wi-Fi 6E identifies devices that extend Wi-Fi 6 operation into the 6 GHz band. The Wi-Fi Alliance introduced the term so people could identify Wi-Fi 6 devices capable of using 6 GHz. A router labeled only Wi-Fi 6 should not be assumed to support that band. Wi-Fi Alliance’s January 2020 announcement describes Wi-Fi 6 capabilities extended into 6 GHz.

Wi-Fi 6E is a capability shared by the router and client device. A compatible router alone cannot make a Wi-Fi 5 or ordinary Wi-Fi 6 phone use 6 GHz. The Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification program treats 6 GHz support as a distinct device capability alongside 2.4 and 5 GHz.

What does the 6 GHz band change?

It adds spectrum and potential channel capacity for compatible devices. That can give Wi-Fi 6E clients more room to communicate and reduce competition with devices using older Wi-Fi bands. It does not guarantee a particular speed or lower latency in a particular home: results depend on client and router capabilities, distance, walls and other obstructions, network traffic, internet service, and local operating rules.

  • Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
  • EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.

The Wi-Fi Alliance’s 2020 announcement described 14 additional 80 MHz channels and seven additional 160 MHz channels in the regulatory context of that announcement. Those figures are historical context, not a universal current channel plan. Available spectrum and channels vary by region.

Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 capabilities into 6 GHz, including OFDMA, target wake time, and MU-MIMO. Wi-Fi Alliance certification supports interoperability and is associated with WPA3 security; certification does not establish the real-world performance of a specific router in your home. Features and radio configurations differ by model. The Alliance’s January 2021 certification announcement describes the program.

Does Wi-Fi 6E work everywhere?

No. Governments set the spectrum and operating rules, so the band available to Wi-Fi is not identical everywhere. TP-Link reports that 1,200 MHz of 6 GHz spectrum is available for Wi-Fi in the United States and 480 MHz, from 5.945 to 6.425 GHz, in the EU; these are regional allocations, not router specifications that apply worldwide. See TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 6E overview for those reported figures.

Operating conditions can also differ within a region. Wi-Fi Alliance Services says U.S. outdoor or standard-power 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E devices must use an Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) system to protect incumbent services, and reports a comparable AFC-control requirement for Canadian standard-power devices. Check the current rules that apply in your country and to the device type you plan to use. Wi-Fi Alliance Services provides information on Wi-Fi 6E and AFC.

How to tell whether a router is Wi-Fi 6E

  • Check the exact model’s specifications for “Wi-Fi 6E” or explicit support for the 6 GHz band. “Wi-Fi 6” or “AX” by itself does not establish 6 GHz support.
  • Check your client device’s specifications for 6 GHz Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi 6E support. If it lacks that capability, it cannot use the router’s 6 GHz radio.
  • Do not rely on “tri-band” alone. Confirm that the third band is 6 GHz; a tri-band router could use a different band arrangement. Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 6E tri-band operation as simultaneous 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz operation: Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 6E explanation.
  • For a purchase decision, compare the model’s supported bands and local regulatory version, channel widths, compatibility with your devices, WAN and LAN port speeds, coverage or mesh requirements, security and update support, and price. Verify current specifications for the exact model and market.

If a computer does not support 6 GHz, a compatible client adapter may be an option, but first confirm that the computer can use one and that an adapter is actually needed.
