Check the Wi-Fi standard supported by your computer or phone and by your router: 802.11ac is Wi-Fi 5, while 802.11ax is Wi-Fi 6. On Windows, netsh wlan show drivers shows whether your wireless adapter supports 802.11ax. That confirms the adapter’s capability—not necessarily the generation of the connection you are using now.
Know which Wi-Fi version you are checking
There are three separate questions: what your device’s wireless adapter supports, what your router supports, and what generation the current connection uses. The first two are established by each product’s specifications. The third depends on the devices at both ends of the connection and may be shown in your operating system or router interface.
The Wi-Fi Alliance introduced Wi-Fi 6 as the consumer-facing designation for products and networks based on 802.11ax. Its explanation distinguishes a product’s supported technology from the generation used by a particular connection: Wi-Fi Alliance introduces Wi-Fi 6.

| Label in specifications | What it means |
|---|---|
| 802.11ac | Wi-Fi 5 |
| 802.11ax | Wi-Fi 6 |
| 802.11ax with 6 GHz support, or Wi-Fi 6E designation | Wi-Fi 6E |
Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 to the 6 GHz band; Wi-Fi 6 alone does not mean a device supports 6 GHz. See Microsoft’s explanation of Wi-Fi in Windows.

Check your Windows adapter
-
Open Command Prompt or Terminal.
-
Enter
netsh wlan show driversand press Enter. -
Find Radio types supported. If the list includes 802.11ax, the wireless adapter supports Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E.
This command reports the adapter’s supported radio types. It does not tell you by itself whether the router supports Wi-Fi 6 or whether your current connection is using it. Microsoft also advises checking the router’s documentation or manufacturer’s website: Faster and more secure Wi-Fi in Windows.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check the router and current connection
Find the router’s supported standard
Look for the exact router model on its label, in its administration app, or in its documentation. Search the manufacturer’s specifications for Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ax. A device with an 802.11ax-capable adapter cannot create a Wi-Fi 6 connection through a router that does not support 802.11ax.
Find the generation in use
When your operating system or router management interface reports the connection’s Wi-Fi generation, use that information to identify the active connection. Do not infer it just from the adapter’s capability: a Wi-Fi 6-capable device may connect to a router using an older generation. The precise menu steps vary by platform; the documented command here applies to Windows. For other devices, check the exact model’s official specifications and the router’s specifications.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Clues that do not identify Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6
-
The network name (SSID): it does not establish which Wi-Fi standard the router or connection uses.
-
Advertised internet speed: speed alone does not identify the Wi-Fi generation.

Compare your device and router
To determine whether your setup can use Wi-Fi 6, verify the standard supported by both the client device’s wireless adapter and the router. If you need to know what is being used on a particular connection, check the reported connection generation as well. Treat 6 GHz support as a separate check for Wi-Fi 6E. These labels identify supported standards; they do not establish a guaranteed speed improvement for a specific home network.
