If YouTube will not load, first check whether other websites work. If they do, identify whether the restriction is tied to your account, YouTube’s Restricted Mode, a managed school or work device or network, or your internet provider. The right fix depends on who controls that layer: change your own setting when you can, and ask the responsible administrator or provider when you cannot.
Start with the symptom: is YouTube down, restricted, or incompatible?
| What you notice | Likely cause | Who can resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube and other websites will not load | Internet connection or device problem | You, your network administrator, or your internet provider |
| YouTube works for other accounts or networks, but not yours | Account or administrator setting | You, or the account administrator |
| Some videos are unavailable, or Restricted Mode cannot be changed | YouTube’s content filter or a control applied by an account, network, or mobile provider | You, or the person or organization managing that control |
| YouTube works in a browser but not in a particular app | App compatibility or support issue | Use the official app or website; update supported software |
| YouTube fails only on school or work Wi-Fi | Institutional network or device policy | The school or workplace administrator |
An error message alone does not show that YouTube itself has been blocked. YouTube’s access troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and contacting the network administrator or ISP if either may be blocking the service.
Check your connection before changing settings
- Open another website. If it also fails, check whether your device is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data and whether the connection is working.
- Try YouTube on another connection you are allowed to use. For example, compare your home connection with mobile data. If YouTube works on one but not the other, the problem is more likely specific to the original network or provider than to your YouTube account.
- Compare the same network with another device or account, if available. A difference can help distinguish a device or account setting from a network-wide restriction.
- Read the exact message. An administrator notice, a Restricted Mode setting, and a general loading error point to different causes; follow the relevant section below.
If your network administrator or ISP is blocking YouTube, YouTube’s advice is: “Your network administrator or ISP may be blocking YouTube. Get in touch with your network administrator or ISP and learn more.” YouTube Help does not identify a universal workaround for these restrictions.

Turn off Restricted Mode if you control the setting
Restricted Mode filters content that may be mature. It is not the same as an age restriction on a particular video, and it is not a complete block on YouTube. When the setting is available to you, sign in and use YouTube’s profile menu to open Restricted Mode, then switch it off. On the website, this setting is under your profile picture; in the mobile app, open your profile picture and look under Settings and General. Labels and placement may vary by app version.

If the setting is locked or keeps turning back on, check YouTube’s content restrictions page. It can help identify whether the control comes from your account, network, or mobile provider. A network or provider setting cannot necessarily be changed from your YouTube profile; contact whoever manages that connection. YouTube explains the setting and its possible controls in its Restricted Mode help.
Resolve a Google Workspace administrator restriction
If YouTube says your administrator restricted access, the account may belong to a school or workplace using Google Workspace. The organization may not have enabled YouTube for its users. A regular account user cannot override an administrator’s service setting: ask the organization’s administrator whether access is available and whether your account should have it.

An authorized administrator can review the organization’s YouTube service setting in the Google Admin console. Google’s manage YouTube settings for users guidance describes the relevant controls. Admin console labels can change, so follow the current instructions for the organization’s edition and account structure rather than assuming every Workspace account has the same access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHandle school and workplace blocks through the organization
Schools and employers may manage YouTube through accounts, devices, and network rules. The restriction may therefore remain even when you sign into a personal account or use a different YouTube setting. Ask the school or workplace administrator whether access is permitted, whether a specific account or approved device is required, and whether an exception is available.

Google provides administrators with controls for YouTube access, including options for managed education environments. Some additional limits apply to Google Workspace for Education users whose accounts are marked as under 18; Google describes the changes that took effect on September 1, 2021, in its YouTube changes for users under 18 guidance. The policy that applies depends on the account and the institution’s configuration.
Do not change settings on a device or network you do not administer. A proxy, VPN, or other bypass is not a guaranteed fix: managed devices and networks may block it too, and whether its use is allowed depends on the institution, provider, and location. Ask the organization for an authorized route instead.

Separate app trouble from a YouTube block
If YouTube works at youtube.com but not in a particular third-party app, that points to an app compatibility issue rather than proof of a network block. Try the official YouTube app or website and update the app if an update is available. YouTube’s supported devices guidance can help establish whether a device is supported.
Third-party apps that access YouTube through its API must comply with YouTube’s API terms. An unsupported client may stop working even when the service is accessible in an official app or browser; YouTube explains its requirements in the YouTube API Services Terms of Service.

Use this checklist to choose the next step
- Other websites fail too: troubleshoot your connection or contact the network administrator or ISP.
- Only a managed account is restricted: ask its Workspace or school administrator to check access.
- Restricted Mode is on: turn it off if the control is available; if it is locked, check the restrictions page and contact the account, network, or provider manager shown there.
- YouTube fails only on school or work equipment or Wi-Fi: ask the institution about its policy and an authorized exception.
- A third-party app fails but the website works: switch to the official app or website and check whether the device and app are supported.
Access rules vary by institution, internet provider, account, and location. If the restriction is managed by someone else, that person or organization is the source that can explain whether access can be restored.
