A new router cannot speed up a slow internet connection coming from your modem or ISP. Wi‑Fi performance also depends on the device, radio band, router placement, interference, and obstacles between the router and your device. Before buying another router or a mesh system, compare wired and wireless speeds, then test Wi‑Fi near the router and in the room where it is slow.
First, find out whether the slowdown is Wi‑Fi or your internet service
Run a speed test under consistent conditions, ideally comparing a wired device with a wireless one. For a stronger check, connect a computer directly to the modem and test again, following your ISP’s instructions for a direct connection. A direct Ethernet connection avoids Wi‑Fi congestion and gives a useful comparison with wireless performance, as described in this FCC-hosted consumer document. TP-Link likewise recommends a direct-to-modem test to help distinguish router performance from modem or ISP performance in its slow-internet troubleshooting guide.
If the direct-modem test is also slow, the router is less likely to be the cause; the modem or ISP service may need attention. If the wired result is good but Wi‑Fi is slow, concentrate on wireless coverage, settings, interference, or the device. Reconnect the router normally after the test.

Compare performance near the router and in the slow room
Test the same device near the router, then in the location where you notice the slowdown. If it works well nearby but poorly farther away, distance, walls, furniture, or other obstructions may be weakening the signal. Google’s guidance on factors that affect Wi‑Fi speed notes that distance and building materials can reduce performance; a clearer line of sight can help.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Before changing settings or buying hardware, move the router to a more open, central position if practical, then repeat the tests. A result that improves after moving it points toward a placement or coverage problem rather than proving the router is defective.
Choose the Wi‑Fi band that fits the location
Wi‑Fi bands involve a range-and-speed tradeoff. A nearby device may get higher speeds on 5 GHz, while 2.4 GHz can be more useful farther from the router. The FCC-hosted consumer document describes 5 GHz as faster but shorter-range than 2.4 GHz; Google also notes that a device using 2.4 GHz may not reach the speeds available on 5 GHz.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
If your router combines bands under one network name, it may choose the band automatically. If it offers separate networks, test both where the slowdown occurs rather than assuming one is always better. The best choice depends on distance, obstructions, device support, and local conditions.
Review channel and radio settings without guessing
Router settings can affect performance, but menu names and available controls vary by model, software, and region. Apple’s general recommendations for routers and access points are to enable all offered radio modes and bands, use automatic channel selection, set 2.4 GHz channel width to 20 MHz, and use Auto or all available channel widths on 5 and 6 GHz. These are Apple’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every setting is right for every environment; consult your router maker’s current instructions for exact controls.

Avoid choosing a fixed channel or widening channels as a universal fix. Nearby networks and other devices can make one channel better than another, and equipment differs in what it supports.
Check for interference and physical barriers
Other Wi‑Fi traffic and household electronics can compete with or disrupt a wireless signal. Google lists neighboring Wi‑Fi networks, microwaves, baby monitors, and activity on the home network among possible contributors. Apple notes that Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth both use 2.4 GHz and that metal and reinforced concrete can have a very high interference impact.

- Move the router away from dense barriers and sources of wireless interference when possible.
- Retest with fewer active devices using the network or the same frequency.
- Allow automatic channel selection where available; Apple recommends this approach to help the router scan for a less-interfered channel.
Check whether the slow device is the limiting factor
Test another phone, computer, or tablet in the same location. If only one device is slow, the problem may be specific to that device rather than the router or internet plan. Wi‑Fi speed depends on both ends of the connection, and older devices may not support newer, faster Wi‑Fi standards. Check the device’s supported Wi‑Fi capabilities and whether it is connecting on the expected band.
Apple recommends enabling all radio modes offered by the router and turning on automatic firmware updates when available. Use the router manufacturer’s instructions for those settings, since labels and features differ.

Restart the network, then involve the ISP if needed
Restart the modem and router, then repeat the wired and wireless tests. Google recommends restarting the network and contacting the ISP to confirm service when speed tests are lower than expected; TP-Link also advises restarting the modem and router when both wired and wireless connections are slow.
If a wired or direct-modem test remains slow after the restart, share the results with your ISP and ask it to check the service and modem status. A new router cannot correct a slow connection reaching the home.
When mesh Wi‑Fi is worth considering
Consider mesh only when tests show that Wi‑Fi coverage is weak in particular parts of the home while performance near the router is satisfactory. Mesh can extend coverage, but placement matters: Google’s Nest Wifi performance guidance explains that distance and obstructions affect performance and recommends checking mesh-point placement. Mesh is not a remedy for a slow wired connection or an ISP-side problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before choosing a system or access point, map the dead zones and check compatibility with your existing router or mesh family. Compare wired versus wireless backhaul support, the number and placement of nodes, Ethernet ports, supported bands and Wi‑Fi standard, and how your home’s layout and materials may affect signal travel. Those factors matter more than adding hardware without identifying where coverage fails.
