“Invisible to AI” can mean four different things: a crawler cannot fetch the page, the page is not indexed, it is not eligible for a search snippet, or an AI system simply does not select it for a particular answer. Diagnose those separately. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the starting point is ordinary Google Search eligibility—not a special AI markup trick. Even when a page qualifies, Google does not guarantee that it will be crawled, indexed, or shown.
What “invisible to AI” actually means
There is no single switch that makes a website visible across every AI service. A page can fail at different stages, and each calls for a different fix:
- Inaccessible: A crawler cannot fetch the URL because of a login, server error, robots.txt rule, firewall, or other access control.
- Not indexed: A search engine can fetch the page but has not included it in its index, or an indexing directive excludes it.
- Not eligible for a search feature: The page is indexed but cannot appear with the snippet or other presentation a particular feature requires.
- Not selected: The page is eligible and accessible, but a service does not choose it for a specific response. Eligibility does not guarantee selection or citation.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link. It also says those features have “no additional technical requirements” beyond its established Search practices. That is a statement about Google’s AI features, not a promise of inclusion in an answer or a rule for every AI service. Google Search Central: AI Features and Your Website

1. Confirm the page is publicly reachable
Open the exact URL in a private browser window or another session without your site’s login. Check that the server returns a successful page response rather than an error, and that a crawler is not stopped by an interstitial, bot challenge, or access restriction. Google lists crawler access, a working page, and indexable content among its technical requirements. Meeting them makes a URL eligible for indexing; it does not mean Google will index it. 2. Check robots.txt and indexing directives separately
Review the site’s robots.txt, the page’s robots meta tag, and any X-Robots-Tag response header. These controls do different jobs:
robots.txttells compliant crawlers which URLs they may fetch. It is not a reliable way to remove a URL from Google’s index: a blocked URL can still appear in results.noindexasks a search engine not to index a page. The crawler must be able to fetch the page to see and follow that directive.- Access controls such as authentication or server and security rules are appropriate when content must be private or access must actually be enforced.
If you want Google to process a noindex directive, do not also block Googlebot from crawling that URL. Google’s documentation explains the distinction between crawling and indexing controls in its crawling and indexing guide and robots meta tag specifications.

3. Inspect Google’s view and the index state
In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection for the specific URL to review its index status and the page Google received. Use the Page Indexing and Crawl Stats reports to look for site-wide patterns. Inspect the rendered page as well as its source: Google renders JavaScript, but the important text and links still need to be available in the rendered output. Google primarily uses the mobile version of a site for indexing, so check that the mobile experience contains the same essential content. See Google’s SEO guide for web developers.
4. Make the page clear and useful to people
Put the answer and supporting facts in visible, crawlable page content. Use a descriptive title, meaningful headings, and internal links that help people and crawlers discover related pages. Consolidate duplicate URLs where appropriate and identify localized versions when a page has them. Technical eligibility cannot substitute for useful, original information. Google warns that producing many pages with generative AI without adding value can violate its scaled-content-abuse policy; its guidance emphasizes helpful, reliable, people-first content. Do you need special schema, llms.txt, or an AI-specific fix?
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says no special schema.org structured data is required. Structured data can clarify what a page contains and may make it eligible for a supported Search feature, but accurate markup does not guarantee a rich result or an AI citation. Add supported structured data only when it truthfully describes visible page content and serves a real purpose. Do not use hidden, invented, or mismatched markup to try to compensate for access, indexing, or content problems. See Google’s general structured data guidelines.
The documented Google guidance cited here does not identify llms.txt as a requirement for inclusion in its AI Search features. Do not treat any extra file or schema as a substitute for getting the page crawled, indexed, and eligible under the relevant service’s rules. Other AI services may publish their own guidance, so evaluate those requirements separately rather than assuming Google’s policy applies to them.

Should you block AI crawlers in robots.txt?
That depends on which crawler you mean and what access you want to allow. An operator may use separate bots for search retrieval, fetching a page at a user’s request, or model training. Cloudflare’s bot reference, for example, lists distinct OpenAI identities including GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, and OAI-SearchBot. Identify the relevant crawler and its stated purpose before setting a rule; blocking one identity does not necessarily control another. Cloudflare bot reference

- Purpose: Is the traffic for search or retrieval, a user-triggered fetch, or model training?
- Scope: Should the rule apply to the whole site, selected paths, or particular page classes?
- Control: Is a robots.txt preference sufficient, or do you need a server, firewall, or security rule that enforces access?
- Outcome: Would allowing the crawler support discovery or retrieval you want, or does your policy call for restricting that use?
Robots.txt communicates a preference; it does not technically prevent access, and compliance is voluntary. If you need enforcement, use server-side or security controls. Cloudflare documents its AI Crawl Control options for monitoring crawler activity and managing access policies, but a crawler-management product is optional—not a prerequisite for Google AI eligibility. A practical checklist before you change anything
- Open the exact URL without signing in; confirm it returns a working page rather than an error or blocking challenge.
- Check robots.txt, robots meta tags, and
X-Robots-Tagheaders. Decide whether your goal is to manage crawling, request removal from an index, or keep content private. - Use Search Console URL Inspection to check Google’s index state and rendered page; review Page Indexing and Crawl Stats for broader problems.
- Verify that important text, links, and page content appear in the mobile-rendered version.
- Make the page’s answer clear and useful, with descriptive headings and discoverable internal links.
- Add structured data only when it accurately describes visible content and matches a supported feature.
- Set AI crawler rules by operator, crawler identity, purpose, and scope; use technical access controls if a robots.txt preference is not enough.
After correcting an access or indexing issue, Google may need to recrawl the URL. A successful fetch and an eligible, indexed page improve the conditions for discovery; neither guarantees that a particular search feature or AI answer will show it.
