A hosting bill that jumps in year two usually reflects a change from an introductory first-term price to the plan’s regular renewal rate. The total may also include a domain, SSL product, or other add-on that renews separately. Check the renewal term and each invoice line before concluding that the hosting plan itself doubled.
Why can the second-year hosting bill be higher?
The first term may be promotional
Some providers discount the initial term and charge a different amount when it renews. DreamHost says its promotional pricing applies to the first term and displays renewal rates alongside promotional prices on its plan cards. That is the provider’s description of its own pricing page, not evidence that every host uses the same pricing structure. DreamHost’s pricing page
The billing period may have changed
A low advertised monthly equivalent can be based on paying for several years upfront. A later renewal might cover one year—or another multi-year period—so comparing the monthly equivalent alone can disguise the actual amount charged. Compare the total due and the months it covers for both terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther products may renew separately
A domain name, SSL product, or add-on can have its own renewal price and billing date. Web.com, for example, describes first-year domain and SSL offers with renewal charges, and says products auto-renew at the then-current rate unless canceled. Those charges are not necessarily part of the hosting plan. Web.com hosting information

What published renewal prices show
Provider examples illustrate why the plan, term, and date matter. Namecheap’s May 8, 2026 notice lists the following shared-hosting renewal prices for invoices issued on or after May 19, 2026:
| Plan | Annual renewal | Two-year renewal |
|---|---|---|
| Stellar | $55.88 | $102.88 |
| Stellar Plus | $85.44 | $146.44 |
| Stellar Business | $128.88 | $251.88 |
These are Namecheap’s stated prices for the specified renewal terms and invoice date threshold, not a market average or a comparison with another provider’s plan. The notice says existing add-on prices remain unchanged and distinguishes a yearly trial’s post-trial first payment from later renewals. Namecheap shared-hosting pricing changes notice

How to work out what changed on your bill
- Find the first-term charge. Record the amount paid, the plan or products it covered, and the number of months included.
- Read the renewal notice. Record the next amount due, the renewal date, and how long that payment covers. Do not treat a monthly equivalent as the amount charged today.
- Separate the invoice lines. Identify hosting, domain, SSL, and any other add-ons. Note which products renew on separate schedules.
- Check taxes and fees. Include any amounts shown on the invoice when calculating what you will actually pay.
- Calculate each term’s effective monthly cost. Divide the total for that term by the months it covers, while keeping the full payment due visible.
This comparison shows whether the increase comes from a higher hosting renewal rate, a longer or shorter billing period, separately renewing products, or more than one of these factors.
Compare plans on more than the headline price
When weighing a renewal against another offer, compare the same billing period and check what the plan includes. Backups and SSL can affect the practical value of a plan, but availability and retention vary by product and plan. For other providers, a renewal FAQ or current signup page may help clarify what is included, but a promotional signup price does not establish the later renewal price. Does every host double or triple its price?
No market-wide statistic in the cited provider information establishes a typical renewal increase or shows that every host doubles or triples prices. A public Reddit discussion uses that phrasing as a reader’s question, but an anecdotal question does not establish how common the experience is. Reddit r/Hosting
Prices can change over time, and older quotes may no longer apply. Namecheap’s notice is one example: its updated renewal prices apply only to invoices issued on or after May 19, 2026. Treat any quoted rate as specific to its provider, plan, billing term, and applicable date; taxes, location, and eligibility can also affect the amount due.
