In GTA V, wanted stars can stay on screen after you escape the police because getting out of sight starts a search phase; it does not clear your wanted level instantly. Stop committing crimes, leave police view and the search area, then stay hidden until the stars disappear. If you’re playing GTA Online, Lester may be able to remove the level when the option is available, but nearby police, new crimes, or an activity restriction can prevent it from working.
First, check which GTA game and mode you’re playing
The title “GTA” covers games with different wanted systems, so instructions for one entry may not apply to another. The steps below focus on GTA V Story Mode and GTA Online; GTA IV and San Andreas use distinct mechanics.

In the Xbox-hosted Grand Theft Auto V – Game Help manual, the interface is described as displaying between one and five stars depending on police interest. The stars indicate the wanted level, but they are not a countdown that must vanish the instant you reach cover.

- Stop committing crimes. Further offenses can keep police response active or bring it back while you are trying to escape.
- Break police line of sight. Move away from officers and their search area; being behind a nearby wall or obstacle may not be enough if police can still see you or you remain in the search area.
- Stay out of sight until the stars clear. The wanted-system behavior summarized by the community-maintained GTA V wanted-level reference includes a search phase after police lose sight of you. The wait varies with wanted severity, and some areas can prevent the heat from clearing until you leave.
- Watch the minimap or search indicators, if shown. Use them to judge where police are looking rather than assuming that a short break in visibility is enough.
Why Lester may not remove your wanted level in GTA Online
Lester offers a paid wanted-level removal option in GTA Online, as noted in Rockstar’s GTA Online Starter Tips. The option is not guaranteed to be available in every activity, and calling him does not make it safe to keep attracting police.

- Get some distance from police and stop committing crimes.
- Call Lester and choose Remove Wanted Level if that option is available.
- Avoid new crimes and police proximity immediately before or after using it; either can undermine the escape or bring the wanted level back.
GameSpot’s April 6, 2022 guide to losing the cops in GTA Online says the option is unavailable during most story missions and heists. Because GTA Online is updated, that guide should not be treated as a guarantee about every current activity.
Use tunnels or underwater hiding when a direct escape fails
Changing the environment can help when ordinary evasion is not working, but these are situational tactics rather than universal fixes.

- Underground tunnels: Rockstar’s starter tips suggest Los Santos tunnels as an escape route. Whether a tunnel helps depends on your location and activity.
- Underwater hiding: GameSpot describes fully submerging in GTA V Story Mode or Online, then surfacing outside police vision. Keep an eye on oxygen and do not surface where officers can spot you.
If the stars still won’t disappear
Check the cause before assuming the game is glitched. Verify the game and mode, whether you are in a mission or heist with restrictions, whether you are still near police or in a search area, and whether another crime renewed the wanted state. The available guidance does not establish one universal bug or one fix for every save, activity, platform, or game version.
How the wanted system differs in GTA IV and San Andreas
GTA IV and San Andreas have separate wanted-level mechanics, so do not assume that the GTA V search-phase or Lester instructions apply to them.
