A TV’s coaxial input is for its antenna or cable tuner; it does not show a set-top box connected by HDMI. First identify what the coax cable connects to, then select the matching TV source. For a direct antenna or cable feed, choose TV, Antenna, or Live TV and scan for channels. If an older box sends its output to the TV over coax, tune the TV to that box’s configured RF channel instead.
First identify what the coax cable connects to
Follow the coax cable from the TV to its other end. The correct fix depends on whether it carries a direct broadcast or cable feed, or the output of another device. A coax cable being attached to the TV does not mean the TV is on the right source or that a usable signal is reaching it.

Check the TV source and the connected device
A TV can report no signal when it is set to an input that is not connected to an active device, or when the source signal is weak or interrupted, according to Sony’s no-signal guidance. Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select the source that matches the connection.
- For a direct antenna or cable feed, choose TV, Antenna, or Live TV.
- For a set-top box connected by HDMI, select the HDMI port used by the box and make sure the box is powered on, not in standby.
- For a device sending its output over coax, select TV/RF mode and tune to its configured output channel. Channels 3 or 4 are common in the cited U.S.-oriented instructions, but they are not universal; check the device or provider setup.
Reseat and inspect the coax cable
- Turn off the connected equipment if needed, then unscrew or unplug the coax at the TV and at the antenna, wall outlet, or device.
- Check both connector center pins for bending or damage, and look for a loose connector, corrosion, fraying, crushing, sharp bends, or outdoor wear on the cable. TCL specifically advises confirming that the pins at both ends are not bent or damaged in its external-device troubleshooting instructions.
- Reconnect the cable firmly at both ends. If the cable or connector appears damaged, test with a known-good coax lead. A replacement RG6 lead with suitable F-type connectors may be appropriate when the existing lead is faulty; replacing a sound cable will not correct a wrong input, missing scan, provider outage, or failed tuner.
Scan direct antenna or cable feeds
If the cable runs directly from an antenna or wall outlet to the TV, run the channel scan from the TV’s tuner settings. The exact menu path varies by manufacturer, model, region, and TV software; look for terms such as Channels, Broadcast, Tuner, Channel Installation, or Auto Program. Select antenna or cable as appropriate before scanning. For a cable feed, the provider can confirm whether the service supports direct tuning or requires a box.

If you moved an antenna, scan again after placing it in its new position. A scan can only find channels that the TV tuner can receive from the feed; it cannot restore a missing provider signal or make an HDMI device appear on the coax input. Roku’s cable, satellite, and antenna setup guidance also distinguishes direct TV tuning from using an external box.
If a box outputs over coax, tune its RF channel
When an older receiver, cable box, VCR, or recorder sends its picture through coax, the TV is receiving a modulated RF output—not a fresh antenna or cable lineup. The TV and device must be set to the same configured output channel. Check the box or provider instructions; do not assume channel 3 or 4 applies to every setup. Samsung’s RF signal guidance covers direct connections and RF-output configurations.

Use swaps to locate the likely fault
Change one part of the signal path at a time. These checks can point toward the TV or the incoming feed, although they may not identify a particular fault upstream.

- Connect the same antenna or wall feed to another working TV, if available. If it also has no signal, the issue is more likely in the antenna, outlet, building wiring, or provider feed than in the first TV.
- Connect the affected TV to a known-working feed, using the correct source and a channel scan for a direct antenna or cable connection. If that feed works on another TV but not on this one, check the affected TV’s setup and consult its model-specific support.
If the same cable feed fails on multiple TVs, check with the provider about an outage or service issue. For antenna reception, check the antenna and its position. A swap test narrows the likely location of the problem; it does not by itself prove which cable, outlet, tuner, or upstream component has failed.

Improve antenna reception when the feed is over the air
For an OTA antenna, reception depends on location and placement. Try raising it, moving it near a window, or aiming it toward local towers where practical, then rescan. Results can vary by location and antenna position. An antenna upgrade is only relevant if you use OTA reception and basic connection and placement checks have not resolved the issue; it will not fix a cable-provider outage or a faulty TV tuner.

- Contact the cable provider if the same wall feed has no signal on multiple TVs, if the provider box reports a service problem, or if you need to know whether your plan requires a box or uses a particular RF output channel.
- Use the TV maker’s model-specific support if a known-good feed and cable work on another television but not on the affected set after you select the correct source and scan or tune appropriately.
- Check antenna placement and local reception if the source is an OTA antenna and channels are missing or intermittent.
