A black night photo usually means the camera did not provide enough usable infrared (IR) light, the subject was beyond the night-flash range, or a power, card, or model-specific filter issue interfered. A blurry photo is different: low light and a moving subject can create streaks. Identify which symptom you have, then check the camera’s own manual for compatible batteries, cards, and setting names.
First, identify what the photo shows
- Completely black: Check battery power and whether the IR lights activate; then check the subject’s distance and card compatibility.
- Dark but visible: The subject may be beyond the effective night-flash range, or the flash may not have had enough time to recharge between rapid triggers.
- Streaked or blurry: Low light and a fast-moving subject can cause motion blur. Look for a night-mode setting in the exact model’s manual.
- A trigger with no animal visible: The motion detector may have picked up foliage, sunrise or sunset conditions, or movement beyond the range the IR flash can illuminate.
These are possible causes, not a universal ranking: manufacturer guidance does not establish how often each problem occurs across all trail cameras.
Check batteries and IR illumination
Weak batteries can reduce or prevent night flash. Replace them with a fresh set of the size and chemistry recommended for your camera. Battery advice varies by model: NUM’AXES discusses Ni-MH batteries as an option, while Tactacam recommends fresh, high-quality lithium or alkaline batteries for the REVEAL 2.0. Follow your own camera’s manual rather than treating either recommendation as universal. See NUM’AXES support and Tactacam REVEAL support.
To check whether the IR emitters activate, follow the manufacturer’s test directions. For REVEAL 2.0, Tactacam advises triggering a night photo in a dark room and viewing the emitters through a smartphone camera. If they do not activate, Tactacam identifies a likely hardware failure and directs owners to support. Do not assume this test or its interpretation applies to every camera; consult the maker’s instructions. Tactacam’s procedure

Check the flash range, nearby surfaces, and trigger interval
Motion-detection range and night-flash range are not necessarily the same. A camera can detect an animal that is too far away to illuminate clearly. Check the model’s stated night-flash range and place the camera so the expected subject is within it; do not use another brand’s distance as a universal limit.
Nearby background surfaces can reflect IR light back toward the camera and improve illumination, according to SPYPOINT’s setup guidance. Conversely, a short delay or rapid sequence of triggers can leave less time for the flash to recharge, making later frames darker. If only some photos in a burst are dim, compare their timing and try a longer trigger interval if the camera offers one. SPYPOINT support

Reduce blur and empty triggers by adjusting placement
For blurry photos
SPYPOINT manuals attribute streaks to low-light conditions and fast-moving subjects. Their suggested night-mode choices vary by model: the FORCE guide recommends “BLUR,” while another SPYPOINT manual recommends “Optimal.” Treat these as model-specific labels, not interchangeable settings. Consult the manual for your camera before changing the setting. SPYPOINT support and manuals
Mount the camera securely on a stable tree or post, and aim it so an animal moving through the detection area is likely to remain in frame. A loose mount or poorly chosen angle can make it harder to capture a usable image even when the camera triggers.

Check whether foliage moves in the detection zone, whether the camera faces sunrise or sunset, and whether sensitivity is set too high for the location. Clear moving vegetation, reorient the camera, and adjust sensitivity according to the manual. Also consider whether the sensor is detecting movement farther away than the IR flash can illuminate; a trigger can be genuine even when the resulting night image appears empty. SPYPOINT support

An incompatible, corrupted, locked, damaged, or improperly seated card can interfere with image capture. With the camera off, reseat the card if the manual instructs you to do so; check its contacts and lock position. Back up any images you want to keep before formatting. Burrel warns that using a micro-SD card in an adapter may cause problems on its cameras, but that warning should not be generalized to all brands. Burrel support

Card requirements differ by camera. For example, Tactacam specifies a full-size SD card for REVEAL 2.0: Class 10, U3, 90 MB/s, in 16 GB or 32 GB. That specification is not a general requirement for trail cameras. Check your own model’s manual for card format, capacity, and speed class before buying a replacement. Tactacam REVEAL support
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMoultrie says black night pictures or pink daytime pictures on certain traditional-camera series may indicate that the IR filter needs resetting. Its procedure first checks the recommended batteries and SD card, then alternates triggered pictures in a dark room and a lit room six to eight times. Use that procedure only if it applies to your specific Moultrie model; do not try it as a universal fix. Moultrie support
When to contact the manufacturer
If fresh, compatible batteries and a known-compatible card do not resolve the problem—or the manufacturer’s IR test indicates the emitters are not activating—contact the camera maker or its service provider for model-specific advice. Have the model name, battery type, card details, and an example image ready so support can distinguish an illumination, storage, setting, or hardware problem.
