A Thunderbolt 5 dock’s advertised maximum is a link capability under supported conditions—not a guarantee that every laptop, display setup, or file transfer will show that rate. Check the full path: the computer’s host port, the cable, the dock, and the connected devices. For display problems, also account for resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and bandwidth shared across multiple displays.
What “full speed” means on Thunderbolt 5
Thunderbolt 5 supports up to 80 Gbps in each direction in its balanced mode. For video-intensive traffic, Bandwidth Boost can rebalance the link to provide up to 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive. The 120 Gbps figure is therefore neither a symmetric link rate nor a promise that every dock port or workload can transfer data at that speed. Intel’s 2023 announcement and Thunderbolt 5 Technology Brief describe these link capabilities.
Actual results depend on the weakest or most restrictive part of the connection. A Thunderbolt 5 dock cannot make a lower-capability host port perform as Thunderbolt 5, and a display signal’s bandwidth demand is not the same as a file-transfer speed. Intel identifies resolution, refresh rate, and color depth as factors in display bandwidth; with multiple displays using MST, consider the combined demand of their signals. Intel’s display bandwidth guidance explains the relationship.

The computer’s port is not Thunderbolt 5
The dock’s generation does not determine the host link’s generation. If a Thunderbolt 5 dock connects to a Thunderbolt 4 host, that connection does not become Thunderbolt 5. Check the exact computer model’s specifications and identify the specific port in use. A USB-C-shaped connector alone does not confirm its protocol or capability. Intel’s Thunderbolt port guidance and the computer manufacturer’s specifications can help identify the host capability.
#1 Best Overall
- 20 Ports of Extreme Connectivity - The TS5 Plus includes 3x 80Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 ports, 5x USB-A 10Gb/s ports, 5x USB-C 10Gb/s ports, DisplayPort 2.1, SD 4.0 & microSD 4.0 UHS-II card readers, 10Gb Ethernet, and 3 x audio ports.

The included 330W power supply allows sustained power delivery at all times from the host charging port as well as all of the remaining ports. The downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports and one of the front USB-C ports can provide up to 36W of dedicated power delivery for accessories.
- Flexible Display Configurations - The TS5 Plus on macOS devices can connect up to Dual 6K 60Hz displays, or even Dual 8K 60Hz displays on Macs that support those resolutions. Up to Triple 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Pro & Max only. Up to Quad 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Max only. Windows users please check your PC’s supported display compatibility.
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet - 10GbE is 10X faster than traditional 1GbE found on the majority of docking stations. Connect to ultra fast 10GbE networks in order to transfer files faster than ever, or connect to 10GbE equipped NAS storage devices. *Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe.
- Dual USB Controllers - A unique feature of the TS5 Plus is that it includes Dual USB Controllers. This means that the ports on the front of the dock have one 10Gb/s USB controller for all of the attached devices, and the rear ports have a second 10Gb/s controller for the devices on the back ports. This avoids any bottlenecks when multiple high speed USB devices are connected.
The cable does not support the required link
Use the cable supplied with the dock or one documented as Thunderbolt 5 certified and approved by the dock maker. Connector shape is not enough to establish a cable’s protocol or performance. Anker, for example, recommends the included cable or a certified Thunderbolt 5 cable for its Prime dock. Check the dock maker’s model-specific guidance; do not assume that replacing a cable will overcome a lower-capability host.
The display modes use more bandwidth than the setup can provide
Higher resolution, refresh rate, and color depth increase a display signal’s bandwidth demand. Intel’s examples list 4K UHD at 60 Hz with standard 8-bit color at 12.54 Gbps, and 4K UHD at 120 Hz at 25.82 Gbps. These are example signal figures from Intel, not guaranteed dock throughput or a promise for a particular computer, display, and connection. See Intel’s example figures and guidance.

If several displays are connected through MST, their signals share available bandwidth. A configuration that works with one display may not support the same resolution and refresh rate after another display is added. The available mode also depends on the host, dock, operating system, and display combination.

Bandwidth Boost describes how the host link can rebalance for video-heavy traffic; it does not mean every downstream port can independently sustain the headline host-link rate. Note which dock ports carry displays, storage, and other high-bandwidth devices, then test the setup with fewer active devices to see whether shared traffic is contributing.

How to troubleshoot the connection
- Identify the computer’s exact port. Look up the precise computer model and the port being used. Confirm whether that port supports Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, or another capability; do not infer it from the USB-C shape or the dock’s label.
- Check the dock’s compatibility information. Review the exact model’s supported host generations, operating systems, and display modes. Compatibility statements are product-specific: Anker lists Thunderbolt 5 or 4 laptops for its Prime dock, excludes Thunderbolt 3 hosts, and lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 14.5 or later while excluding ChromeOS and Linux. That is the Prime dock maker’s guidance, not a universal Thunderbolt rule. Check Anker’s current Prime dock specifications.
- Verify the upstream cable. First test with the dock’s included cable, or use a cable documented as Thunderbolt 5 certified and recommended by the dock maker. Confirm that the cable is connected to the dock’s host-facing port, if the model distinguishes it from downstream ports.
- Simplify the display setup. Disconnect extra displays and test one. Add other displays one at a time. If a desired mode is unavailable or unstable, try a lower refresh rate, resolution, or color depth, changing one setting at a time. These adjustments test the signal-demand factors identified in Intel’s guidance; they are diagnostic steps, not a guarantee that a particular mode will work.
- Isolate shared device traffic. Temporarily disconnect high-bandwidth storage or other peripherals, then compare the result. Note the ports used for displays and devices, since their traffic may share the host link or be subject to the dock’s own port capabilities.
- Compare the results with the documented configuration. Use the computer and dock manufacturers’ current compatibility information for your exact host, operating system, display count, and display modes. The evidence available for Thunderbolt 5 does not establish a universal compatibility matrix covering every computer, dock firmware version, monitor, cable, and port combination.
Will a Thunderbolt 5 dock work at full speed with a Thunderbolt 4 laptop?
No: a Thunderbolt 5 dock does not upgrade a Thunderbolt 4 host connection to Thunderbolt 5. The host link remains limited by the computer’s supported capability, and the dock’s own manufacturer may specify additional compatibility limits. Check the exact dock and laptop documentation before expecting particular display modes or peripheral behavior.
When should you consider a different cable or dock?
Consider a different cable only if the current cable is not the included cable or is not documented as certified and supported for the dock. A cable change cannot increase the capability of the computer’s host port.

If the computer supports the capability you need but the existing dock does not support your host or display configuration, compare prospective docks against the exact setup rather than the headline speed alone. Check supported host generations, operating systems, number and modes of displays, upstream and downstream port capabilities, included cable, and the peripheral ports you need. For example, CalDigit advises using its TS5 Plus with a Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 v2 host for maximum functionality and says USB-C 5/10 Gbps host devices are not compatible. That guidance applies to that product, not to every Thunderbolt 5 dock. See CalDigit’s TS5 Plus compatibility information.
