A 200 OK means one request received a successful HTTP response. It does not prove the response contains the right page, that the application is usable, or that a visitor’s important task works. A status-only monitor can therefore stay green while a site is broken. The fix is to check the exact route and response the monitor sees, then add content or workflow checks that match what you need to protect.
What a 200 OK does—and does not—tell you
HTTP status is a narrow signal: it describes the response to a particular request, not the overall health of a website. For example, Amazon Route 53’s basic HTTP/HTTPS health checks treat status codes in the 2xx or 3xx range as healthy. A server can return one of those codes with an error page, stale content, or a redirect that does not lead to the intended experience. A green check means the configured request met the monitor’s acceptance criteria; it does not mean every page or feature works.
That distinction also applies to application health endpoints. Prometheus documents separate health and readiness signals: /-/healthy always returns 200, while /-/ready returns 200 when Prometheus is ready to serve queries. A process can be alive without being ready for useful work.

Start with the monitor’s configuration. Confirm the hostname, path, HTTP method, headers, redirect behavior, and accepted status codes. A check of the home page says little about checkout, login, search, or an API route unless it exercises those routes too.

Then reproduce the request as closely as possible. Compare DNS resolution, TLS behavior, response code, final URL after redirects, response body, and response time. A browser and a monitor may send different requests, so a successful browser visit alone may not reproduce the green check.
Inspect the response behind the green status
Read the body and relevant headers instead of stopping at the status code. Look for an error template, empty or stale content, an authentication redirect, a maintenance page, a fallback route, or a cached response. These are possibilities to investigate, not evidence that any one cause is common.

Where the monitor supports it, require a stable phrase or marker that should appear on the intended page. Route 53 can search the response body for a configured string, but the match is case-sensitive and the complete string must be within the first 5,120 bytes. That limit is specific to Route 53, not a general rule for uptime monitors. A marker can still be present while a deeper feature is broken, so content matching improves a status check but does not replace testing a user journey.
Choose a check that matches the failure you care about

Compare checks by coverage (which failures they can detect), fidelity (how closely they resemble a real request), diagnostic value, and operating cost, including setup, alert noise, and maintenance. Prometheus Blackbox Exporter supports configurable HTTP probe behavior, including accepted status codes and response matching; its project documentation also describes probe_success as the probe’s success signal. A synthetic transaction is a broader operational approach rather than a claim about a particular product.

Design health endpoints with clear semantics
Use separate signals for liveness and readiness. Liveness answers whether a process is running; readiness answers whether it should receive traffic or serve work. Avoid making one ambiguous endpoint answer both questions.
Include a dependency in readiness only when that dependency’s failure means the service should stop receiving traffic. If operators need more diagnostic detail, expose it through a separate signal rather than making the public health endpoint reveal sensitive internals. For Prometheus specifically, its Management API documentation says: “This endpoint always returns 200 and should be used to check Prometheus health.” The same documentation describes /-/ready as the readiness check.

Strengthen monitoring without making it brittle
- Add content assertions for stable markers that indicate the expected page or response loaded.
- Use a synthetic browser or API flow for user-critical tasks, such as a safe read-only search or a carefully managed login test.
- Keep assertions resilient to harmless copy and layout changes; avoid depending on text that editors routinely update.
- Record the probe location, requested URL, final status, latency, and enough failure detail to distinguish DNS, connection, TLS, HTTP, and application-content problems.
- Keep sensitive diagnostics out of publicly accessible health responses.
For example, if the home page returns 200 but visitors report that search fails, keep the home-page check as a reachability signal and add a separate check that submits a safe search and verifies a meaningful result. The two checks answer different questions, so an alert can point to the failing layer rather than treating the whole site as simply up or down.

Know the limits of a particular monitor
Route 53’s documented implementation accepts 2xx or 3xx status codes for basic HTTP/HTTPS endpoint health checks. Its documentation also specifies 4 seconds to establish a TCP connection and 2 seconds after connecting to receive an HTTP status response. These timing requirements and acceptance rules apply to Route 53, not to all monitoring services. Route 53 HTTPS health checks do not validate SSL/TLS certificates, so a passing check is not proof that a browser will consider the certificate valid.
