Camera prices can feel much higher than you remember, but a new flagship, an inflation-adjusted historical price, and a discounted price today are not directly comparable. Some specific prices have risen: Fujifilm raised selected prices in Japan in 2026, and Nikon announced a US adjustment in 2025. Those examples do not prove that camera prices have risen everywhere or by the same amount.

Why camera prices can feel out of date

Price memories often blend different kinds of comparisons: an older entry-level camera against a current flagship, a launch price against a sale price, or an old nominal price against its value after inflation. Any of these can make cameras seem uniformly more expensive even when the models being compared are not equivalent.

Product lines also change. A manufacturer may add a more expensive tier without raising the price of every camera aimed at the same buyer. DPReview’s historical analysis cautions that shifts in product positioning matter: the arrival of a pricier top-tier model alone does not establish a broad increase in comparable camera prices. How to compare camera prices fairly

Before concluding that a camera costs more than it used to, check whether both prices describe the same thing. A useful comparison records:

Kodak PIXPRO FZ45 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 4X Optical Zoom, AA, Black
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
  • Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
  • LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
  • Camera tier and capabilities: Compare models with similar intended users and features, not an old basic body against a new professional or premium model.
  • Price type and date: Distinguish the original launch price, current official list price, and a dated retailer offer. Street prices and discounts can change independently of list prices.
  • Configuration: Check whether the price is for the body alone or a kit that includes a lens.
  • Inflation: A nominal price is the number charged at the time; an inflation-adjusted price expresses its approximate purchasing-power equivalent in a later year.
  • Market: Record country, currency, and tax treatment. A price change in one region does not automatically apply elsewhere.

One historical example: Fujifilm’s X-E line

DPReview listed launch prices of $1,000 for the Fujifilm X-E1 in 2012, $900 for the X-E3 in 2017, and $850 for the X-E4 in 2021. It separately converted those first three launch prices to 2021 dollars: $1,145, $973, and $861, respectively. The nominal figures declined across those examples, while the inflation-adjusted figures show how the older prices compare in 2021 purchasing power. This is an illustration, not a current-price comparison, and the models’ positioning changed. DPReview’s historical price table and methodology

Some price increases are real, but regional

There are documented increases; their scope matters. On October 1, 2026, Fujifilm changes in Japan reportedly raised selected product prices by 6% to 23%. The affected products included selected cameras, a lens, and Instax products—not the company’s entire lineup. Digital Camera World reported that US prices appeared unchanged at the time and that some UK prices had also moved. Digital Camera World’s report on Fujifilm’s Japanese price changes

In the United States, Nikon announced that a “necessary price adjustment” would take effect on June 23, 2025, citing recent tariffs. That was Nikon USA’s pricing communication, not a statement about worldwide prices. Nikon USA’s tariff-related pricing notice

A separate DPReview analysis found increases of 7% to 34%, averaging 13%, among a sample of selected Sony imaging products in the US in 2025. It was a sample, not an accounting of every Sony product, and the report said Sony had not publicly confirmed that tariffs caused the changes. DPReview’s report on sampled Sony product prices

What can push prices or average spending higher?

There is no single established explanation for every price change. The cited company and industry material points to several distinct influences, and a higher average price can also reflect buyers choosing a different mix of products.

Costs and policy

Nikon explicitly cited US tariffs in its 2025 notice. Fujifilm’s 2026 Japan price changes were reported amid material-cost pressure. Canon, discussing memory costs in a 2026 report, said: “As memory prices are expected to take some time to normalize, we will closely monitor future price trends and seek to mitigate the negative impact as much as possible through price increases and additional cost reductions.” That describes Canon’s response to cost pressure; it does not promise a particular increase or establish what other manufacturers will do. Demand and product mix

Canon’s 2025 presentation assessed that the interchangeable-lens camera market had been growing more than expected amid the continuing shift from SLR to mirrorless cameras. It forecast 6.8 million interchangeable-lens cameras for 2025, 6% growth from 2024, and 2.4 million compact digital cameras. These were Canon estimates, not final shipment results; Canon also noted that its compact-camera market sizing based on CIPA members might understate the total when non-member overseas manufacturers are included. Canon’s 2024 performance summary also attributed increased camera sales partly to higher-value models and interchangeable lenses. If buyers purchase more premium bodies or lenses, average spending can rise even if the price of a like-for-like body has not changed. Average spending and the price of an equivalent camera answer different questions. Canon’s 2025 integrated report, covering 2024 performance

What the examples do—and do not—show

The dated cases establish that selected prices changed in particular markets and that companies have cited specific cost or policy pressures. They do not establish a current global average increase for cameras, a single cause behind every adjustment, or the future direction of retail prices. Treat each figure as specific to its year, region, product scope, and price type.

For a purchase decision, compare current listings for the same model and configuration, and note when you checked them. A current retailer price is a snapshot, not proof of a manufacturer-wide price trend.
